Re: using the iCloud drive

Hi,

If you're in the Finder, press cmd-shift-i, or go up to the Go menu and choose
iCloud Drive. then as Scott mentioned, it's just like any other folder on the
Mac. Actually, you can also use the cmd-shift-i command when in Open and Save
dialogs as well, so again, just like any other folder on your Mac.

Re: Downloading Large Zip Folder

2017-05-09 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Hmmm. I found comments saying that SendSpace downloads for free accounts
can be slow and that you need to use use their downloader app and/or get
a Pro account to make that better. One comment said it was throttled to
70-80K/second unless you get the paid account.

Re: new mac user

2017-05-09 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
If the person is a braille user, he or she may wish to get some braille
resources. I believe that Mark Taylor said that one could get this from the
APH (can't remember if that's the right initials from the American Light House
for the blind) or one can get this from the Royal National Institute of Blind
People (RNIB) Uk.

I personally like braille to learn stuff with as I don't get too much done if I
have to learn from an electronic source.

Re: Sharing Files Between my mac and the VM ware Fusion

2017-05-09 Thread Scott Granados
Very easy to do, you can copy and paste from outside the VM to inside the VM or
you can place the files in documents or downloads, desktop etc. that are
automatically shared with your VM. This assumes a windows VM that you’re using
and that you have these features enabled which should be when you set up your
VM. Clipboard is probably your easiest method.

Let me know if that helps.

Re: Downloading Large Zip Folder

2017-05-09 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Internet speed depends on the weakest link. Even if you have super fast
internet, if the place you're downloading from does not, or one of the
parts of the network between you and them is congested, then it can be
slow. Is it a public download that somebody else can try?

Re: Multiple Devices for Audio Output

2017-05-09 Thread Bill Gallik
I was able to figure what I needed to do to have VoiceOver directed through my
USB headphones while all other sounds are routed to the speakers connected via
the audio jack. For those that might be interested (and to help set this in my
memory by enumerating the following steps) here’s how it’s done:

- In Preferences/Sounds set output to the desired device - in my case it’s the
headphone port (not to be confused with the USB headphones) but rather the
headphone (or audio) 3.5 mm jack. This will direct all sounds to whatever is
connected to that jack (in my case, LogicTech speakers).

- To have VoiceOver directed through the USB headphones bring up the VoiceOver
Utilities (VO+F8). Activate the “Sounds” category in this utility, then tab to
the Pop-Up that let’s you identify the output device. and select the desired
device.

A slight caveat here, since my LogicTech headphones also provide a microphone I
have the Sounds/Input (Preferences) set to the LogicTech headphones. I mention
this because it may present some confusion that the Sounds/Output in
Preferences is set to the audio jack while setting Sounds/Input to the
LogicTech headphones. This while needing to make a special specification to
route VoiceOver through the LogicTech headphones via the VoiceOver Utilities
Sounds category.

Hope this isn’t too awful confusing!

There's a way to create an audio MIDI device that talks to specific ports. I'm
not able to give an exact link or instructions at the moment but look into your
audio midi setup it's in the same folder (other) as tools like the activity

RE: powerpoint

2017-05-09 Thread daj.griffith
This is a bit puzzling as I do not recognise pbx as anything to do with
Powerpoint. Putting this file type into Google tells me that pbx is actually
an Outlook Express message folder file.

It may be anew filetype that I have never come across in relation to Powerpoint.

Anyway the normal workaround for maximum access is to to open a Powerpoint PPS
or similar file in Powerpoint and then immediately esxport it as a PDF file.

Then use your PDF Viewer of choice to read the exported Powerpoint
presentation. It is normally much easier to do things this way rather than
working from within the slides in Powerpoint.

Hi all.

Can someone please help out in regards to powerpoint? I start school this week

Multiple Devices for Audio Output

2017-05-09 Thread Bill Gallik
I’ve done this several times, but for the life of me I cannot recall how I did
what I’m about to describe.

I have a USB headset that I want to use for VoiceOver output and for any audio
input I may want to use. However, I want system sounds directed through the
headphone jack on my Mac mini that has fairly decent speakers installed. Most
specifically, I have my Mac mini reporting the time of day on the quarter hour
and I want this coming through those speakers connected to the 3.5 MM jack so I
can hear that report throughout the house. I cannot remember how I had
accomplished in the past. Can anybody offer me some suggestions?

Thanks!

Sure, I’m using the one included with incredible pbx. I can attach one to a

 Hi Janina

So I thought I'd have a play with IP v6 and oh how difficult that was.

So enable it on my fritz box and then made sure my servers had IP v6
switched on and DHCP and DNS set to obtain addresses automatically
 And so far no issues.

If only my service provider did IP v 6 I'd switch ip v4 off, apart from
my work place I don't really need it

And nothing appears to be different so bring it on.

Is IPv6 worth the bother? Well, that depends on what you do, of course.

If all you do is browse the web and pick up email somewhere, the answer is
 probably no.

If your home systems do voip or host any services, including just
listening for ssh, there's a solid benefit. And, this benefit is magnified
if more than one of your home LAN machines are hosting. My personal
example is my work desk where there's a SIP handset that looks to all the
world like an ordinary business phone, but is actually a computer
connected by cat ethernet cable to my router. I also use a soft SIP client
on my main desktop, so I have two phones right there that need to make,
and more importantly recieve calls. The recieving is the benefit. On IPv4
you're writing NAT rules. With 6 you forget all about NAT.

Another example ... When I turned off ssh over 4, my hack attempts dropped
to zero, literally. Nowadays I only turn on ssh over 4 on my server, and
then only when traveling because I can't be sure of IPv6 access where I
 travel.

Another example ... If you want to access files on your home LAN from your
mobile while you're out and about, you're going to find it far simpler and
far more secure to do that over 6, and not at all over 4.

 So, it depends.
