Re: bootcamp error messages on latest osx?

2018-01-09 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
I don't know on either of your questions--sorry. I guess Google needs to
be your friend on these issues.

I do have a thought ...

You might want to consider a newer Mac, just not a new one. Price should
be much less. You could look at the Macs that support running Win 10 and
look for refurbished, or owner sold models on that list.

If possible, I'd try to stay above the models that support installing
directly from an iso image on the Mac drive, as opposed to requiring you
to create a bootable USB stick. That's got to be much much faster. My
Airbook is too old for that.

There might be two benefits to a used Mac that you would lose with a new
Mac:

1.) Physical function keys, instead of the touchbar. Your choice on
whether that matters to you.

2.) The audible chime on boot has apparently disappeared on newer
Macs. If you're dual booting, working without the chime could be really
frustrating, imo.

For my money the above two considerations make a slightly used Airbook a
smarter buy, assuming it's in good condition and its former owner wasn't
a smoker.

a quick question once I got windows7 loaded even though the mac doesn't

it has 2 gigs it is seriously slow and want to at least upgrade it to 4

Relevant to your situation I can attest that BootCamp is fussy about
using the tail end of your OS X container. I actually tried to get fancy
and put in a Win partition mid disk, then assign the remainder for ExFAT
so that it could contain files to share with both OS. Well, BootCamp
refused to cooperate with that.

The only situation that successfully created the BootCamp partitionand

diskutil from the command line is your friend on this task, imo. Note in

You want to see the entire container assigned to the Mac before running
BootCamp.

VMware Fusion 10.1.1 and BootCamp

2018-01-09 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
I'm wondering whether it makes sense to doctor a BootCamp install of
Windows 10 from within VMware.

I've encountered the situation where my headphone jack is refusing to
work for my existing BootCamp install of Windows 10. It worked for a
brief while, then stopped. Nothing I've tried has brought it back.

What I need to do is to apply Apple's BootCamp drivers. These should
have been installed via the BootCamp process, of course, but I've been
unable to verify that. Certainly, at the moment there's no sound from
Windows, though I've verified there is a working installation there.
I've actually poked around in it with NVDA. It literally died on me as I
was trying to login with my BootCamp drivers at hand on a USB stick.

So, my question. Can I apply these drivers if I load up my BootCamp
install within the latest VMware? I'm presuming it reads apfs. But I
wonder whether it would go silent the same way, or perhaps that it might
be using different drivers at that level. Anyone know?

All help much appreciated.

Janina

Here's how to check if your iPhone or iPad is brand new, a replacement unit, or a refurbished model, Redmond Pie

2018-01-09 Thread M. Taylor
How To Check If Your iPhone Is Brand New Or Refurbished Model
Here's how to check if your iPhone or iPad is brand new, a replacement unit,
or a refurbished model.

There's no additional installations or software required to obtain this
information.
Most of us have likely been in the situation whereby we have purchased a
device through a secondary sales channel and then subsequently wondered if
we are actually getting what we have been told.

Where Apple's iPhone is concerned, we could be purchasing a brand new device
or a refurbished model. That makes all the difference and affects what we
are willing to pay for a phone. With this little trick, you will be able to
quickly ascertain the type of device on offer. Let's take a look at the
process.

Step 1:
First of all, you are going to need to have the device charged, powered up,
and ready-to-use. Once that's all done, launch the native Settings app.

Step 2:
There's no additional third-party apps or software required for this. Once
in Settings, navigate to General > About. This is where a lot of relevant
information about your device is located.

Step 3:
Scroll down through all of the provided information until you find the label
which gives you the device's "Model" number. This will give you a unique
number pertaining to that device which either begins with "M", "F", or "N",
and then followed by a series of letters and numbers.

Step 4:
If your Model number starts with the letter "M", then it is a brand new
device. If the Model number begins with the letter "F" then it is a
refurbished device. And if your Model number starts with a letter "N" then
it is a replacement device.
M = Brand new device
F = Refurbished device
N = Replacement device.

Extremely quick and easy and a sure fire way to tell what type of device you
are currently in ownership of. If you are planning on buying something
through secondary sales channels, and you are presented with the opportunity
to take a look at the Model number, or you can get an unedited screenshot
from the seller, then it's a really good and quick way of ascertaining if
that person is being honest about the type of device that is being sold.

Best adult apps for iPhone, VR-Heads

2018-01-09 Thread M. Taylor
Everyone,

Just so we're all clear, in no way am I endorsing, promoting, applauding,
(or anything else for that matter), any of the apps discussed in the
following article.

I am posting the article because it is iOS-related and there may be those
among us who seek this information; nothing more.

Best adult apps for iPhone
By Jen Karner

You might not know it but there are plenty of adult apps available on the
iOS store.
When it comes to adult content on mobile devices, there are a variety of
apps that you can find to enjoy. From apps that help you to try and improve
your sex life, to those that help explain exactly what all those crazy sex
toys do, there are plenty of awesome apps filled up with adult content.
While the App Store isn't overflowing with adult content, there are a fair
few apps you can find, so long as you know what you are looking for.

. iKamaSutra
. Pinup Poker
. Playboy Classic
. iPassion
. Browser for Reddit

iKamaSutra
The Kama Sutra is well known for it's catalog of sexual positions, but you
don't need to worry about anyone stumbling on this book in your library.
Instead, you can download the app and get access to everything you're
looking for. iKamaSutra. This app includes all of the positions found within
the Kama Sutra with some extra options for you.
You can choose to look for potiions based on intimacy, complexity, and
strength, using slider scales to find positions that you are capable of
completing. There are positions from movie scenes, 9 categories for you to
peruse through, and easy to read instructions for each position. The basic
app comes with 110 positions, but with in-app purchases you can increase
this to over 230 positions. You can even shake your phone to pick a random
position, save your favorites, there are even suggestions for sweet and sexy
date ideas in there.
See at iTunes ($2.99)

Pinup Poker
Not every app on our list is explicit, even though it's definitely got
adults in mind. That's where Pinup Poker comes in. You get to play Poker
with a decent engine, all the while getting a eyeful of cards that have been
decorated with pinup models. There aren't really any bells or whistles to
this app, which is why it's available for the low, low, price of free. This
app is a great addition for anybody who enjoys poker, but wants to add some
animated eye candy to the game.
See at iTunes

Playboy Classic
Playboy has long been a staple when it comes to adult oriented
entertainment. Their app delivers you tons of content that you would have
found in the magazine a few years ago, just this time it's on the screen of
your preferred device. You can browse through photos of playmates, read
articles, and even view galleries of classic cartoons from the earlier days
of the magazine. There is roughly a ton of content crammed into this app for
you to view and explore.
Playboy Classic is subscription based, with a 30-day membership running
$2.99, or a one-year subscription for $19.99. Updated daily with new photos,
events, and articles, this may be the app you've been looking for!
See at iTunes($2.99 monthly, $19.99 yearly)

iPassion
Sometimes you want a little bit of a surprise to spice up your love life
with your sweetie. iPassion can help you do just that with a fun game built
for couples. You'll both answer a few questions about yourself, followed by
a specially built quiz. Both you and your partner will need to answer
questions about each other. Each correct answer will net you 10 points, and
the first one to hit 100 points will win a prize.
This is a fun way for you to learn more about your partner, and what get
their motor going. If you're not sure it's quite up your alley, have no
fear. This app is absolutely free for download, although there are some
in-app purchases you can take advantage of.
See at iTunes

Browser for Reddit
If you haven't spent any time on Reddit, than you might not know that it is
filled to the brim with explicit content. Pretty much anything you are
hoping to find, can be found within the depths of this mammoth website. This
app makes it easy to browse through Reddit and search out the content you've
been looking for.
This app includes a pin code so that you can ensure nobody accidentally
stumbles onto what you were looking at. You can also login to your personal
Reddit account, upvote or downvote posts, search subreddits, and comment on
posts. Best of all this app is absolutely free, with only a single in-app
purchase available.

What's your favorite?
While there aren't an overabundance of NSFW apps available on the App Store,
there are more than you may think. The apps we've chosen are the best that
we were able to find, but that doesn't mean that there aren't gems hiding
out there waiting to be found. Have you ever used any of these apps? Is
there a great adult app that we failed to mention here? Drop us a line in
the comments and let us know about it!

I'm never upgrading my iPhone again, and you may not want to either, Mashable

2018-01-09 Thread M. Taylor
I'm never upgrading my iPhone again, and you may not want to either
By Monica Chin, Dec 22, 2017

In the past few months, Apple has released frequent updates to iOS 11.
Should you upgrade? For most people, it's a personal preference, but there
are some people who should definitely steer clear.
I've owned an iPhone 6 for the past two years. When Apple released iOS 11 in
early September, I was still using iOS 9, and my phone was still running
like new.

I held off on upgrading to iOS 11 for as long as I could, worried about
rumors I'd heard that it would decrease my outdated phone's performance.
Eventually, however, I gave in to pressure from friends and colleagues,
plugged my phone in, and upgraded.
My phone's performance and battery life were immediately reduced to shells
of their former selves. I now need to charge my phone about three times a
day, it shuts down without warning, and it crashes when I have too many apps
running.

So it goes without saying that it might not be the best decision to upgrade
to the newest version of iOS for everyone, security risks be damned. The
first group who shouldn't upgrade: Jailbreakers.
I've never jailbroken my phone, mostly because it sounds like a lot of work,
but a number of my friends are incredibly loyal to the procedure. It's not
yet possible to jailbreak a device running iOS 11, though that's in the
works.

The second and much larger group is people like me who have an older device
(two more more models behind the current flagship) who are happy with its
current performance.
Updating your phone is a gamble, and the odds aren't even. Decreased battery
life, keyboard bugs, and general performance glitches are always a risk. But
the reward stays the same, while the risk gets higher, the older your phone
is. If you're happy with the way your phone is running, there's little need
to take that risk.

It is worth noting one major point here: iOS updates do carry important
security features, and fix vulnerabilities that could compromise your
device. It's worth reading up on these fixes, and factoring them into your
decision. In some cases, it will be worth the risk of avoiding the update.

For example, iOS 11 fixed the KRACK vulnerability, but that was already very
difficult for hackers to exploit. And given the speed at which Apple has
been rolling out iOS updates lately, and then more rushed updates to fix the
bugs in those updates, it's not unthinkable that an update could bring new
vulnerabilities too, as we saw with macOS High Sierra.

If you're happy with your older iPhone, it's fine to leave it be. Forbes
reports that the happiest users of older phones still use some variation of
iOS 10, or even iOS 9.
At the very least, don't update immediately after the rollout. Sit back for
a few weeks, keep an eye on the news, and see what vulnerabilities and bugs
arise. Once you have all the facts, you can decide whether to take the leap.

Re: Get rid of mission control from f10 key.

2018-01-09 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi. Thanks for the info for disabling keyboard shortcuts with Mission Control.
I never knew what this app was for because I couldn’t use it with Voiceover. I
just selected the dash key instead of control down or up arrow to activate
Mission Control. This app is very annoying and pops up at the wrong time when
I’m trying to look at a document or PDF.
Hopefully Mission Control won’t appear as often in the future now when I’m
reading a document. Thanks for your help.

Re: mac versus iPad pro

2018-01-09 Thread Alex Hall
Honestly, the iPad may be superfluous if you already have a latest-generation
iPhone and keyboard. I enjoy split-screening apps on iPad, and using it when I
want to save my phone's battery, but there isn't much it can do that iPhone
can't. If you're already used to having an iPad, then yes, upgrading to a Pro
will give you a lot more speed and sound. But you might consider trying to use
your phone as your primary for a while, to see how things go.

RE: Question about installing jaws on my Mac

2018-01-09 Thread David Griffith
I think you will find that these are notthe the problems you expect.
Last year in the |UK at least and I understand other countries as well you
did not have to actually physically attend conventions to take advantage of the
offers. They simply run during the the period of the event and actually
beyond so you could just order as normal during this window.
I, fore example, ordered the Freedom Scienctific Open Book Software and Pearl
camera under the UK special offer pricing during the Sight village event in
the UK even though I did not attend. I simply rang the UK distributor whilst
the event was running. I have in previous years bought my SMA under similar
conditions.

Secondly having a Pro jaws Licence does not preclude you from purchasing a SMA
at reduced Home pricing. This is precisely what I did. I had a Pro licence
whilst in work but now I am retired I buy my SMA licences at the reduced Home
rate.
As far as I am aware I have lost no Jaws functionality as a result of this.

Subject: Re: Question about installing jaws on my Mac

well,
small problem… I would have to spend a great deal of money to get to the NFB
convention. that would leave me with very little to spend on needed products
(like jaws). I happen to use the Pro version here (it was included as part of
my contract) and any further upgrades would be along that path. so, it *will*
definitely cost me more, even if there is no significant difference between the
pro and home versions. Even then, the retail cost (according to the freedom
scientific website) is still just as expensive. So, even after the takeover,
there hasn't been any real change to the pricing model. About the only thing
that has changed is there is now less choice in what you get to use. There used
to be Window Eyes, jaws, Thunder, System Access and NVDA. Now, there is jaws,
System access, NVDA and possibly narrator (which I don't count as a serious
screen reader with it's current limitations). So, even though VFO has a good
business model, their motive is still profit.

Speaking of, which, if Freedom Scientific (VFO) were to drop the government
business pricing model and simply sell to the blind public for about $120, they
would be generating far more income. They wouldn't have to wait for government
vouchers to be paid on, not have to negotiate onerous government contracts or
jump through regulatory hoops.  They would go from selling through government
agencies to (at most) several hundred vocational rehabilitation recipients per
year, to many multiple orders of magnitude greater customers. $100 puts the
price well within reach of even the most impoverished blind person. It would
also cut down on piracy (the current price point encourages it in most foreign
countries)

ok, at this point, I have wandered way off the reservation with regard to the
topic. Now, as for installing jaws on a mac.. Assuming you have the correct
version that works with your key, and you have all the bootcamp drivers
installed, there shouldn't be any issues installing there Given what I have
seen in this thread, it appears that it is either a version conflict, or
something that the registration program reads changes between reboots.  In
either case, that can be bad, as it will force the end user to use all the
available registrations they have with the product. That will leave them
without a working product within a very short time (and 40 minute demo mode is
a real PITA).

On Jan 7, 2018, at 4:23 PM, Jonathan Cohn wrote:

Sorry, not quite. The Pro version costs about as much as JAWS always did in the
past. The home version SMA is about $120. There is also a special pricing for
the home version that you can get if your company buys enough of the Pro
version or if you go to the NFB National convention.

But still I have hard several times from VFO folks that the difference between
Pro and Home is licensing rather than anything technical.
I believe you can even get  the remote client services for the home version
which was not true for v15.

Jonathan Cohn

well, so that is how VFO is trying to play the game. If you make money on a

btw, I am still on Jaws 16 here (the pro version) and there was no such clause
in that user agreement then.

RE: help on a new Mac

2018-01-09 Thread Simon Fogarty
However as the 11 inch Mac book air is no longer available you would have to
look at the 13 inch,

However if you have the mac mini and you have a bit of storage space in it,

I”d think slightly out of the box and say look at the iPad Pro 10 inch,
With a Bluetooth keyboard you have pretty much full control of the iPad and
applications,

Pages numbers and keynote all come standard with the device,
You can then stream your music / videos etc from your mac mini then you cover
all your basis

Just another thought

RE: help on a new Mac

2018-01-09 Thread Simon Fogarty
I havetoagree wwith Alex on this,
Both sides

The iPad Pro is a great device although can be costly if you get the 256 gig
model but I’d suggest more rather than less storage,

As for the mac book air,
That is my personal choice of notebook for the size and weight, plus more
powerfull processor and cheaper than the mac book 12 inch

Plus the air give you USB 3 and thunderbolt,

Now with the standard 8GB ram and increase a hard drive storage size to 512GB
You can’t go wrong

If money wasn’t an issue then the mac book pro would be a more powerfull
machine but not needed in most situaitons.

I still use an 11inchh mac book air from mid 2013 for both mac os and windows.

Shame you can’t get them now.

An Air would be the cheapest, and would definitely fit your use case.

Have you considered dropping the Mac and using an iOS device for everything?
With keyboard commands, and, of course, a keyboard connected to your iThing,
many tasks are much easier these days. Switching apps and quickly dealing with
emails isn't as smooth as it is on macOS, but you mentioned books, and iOS has
far better book-reading apps than the Mac. I know it's an odd suggestion, but
it's a thought. After all, an iPad is well under half the cost of an Air, and
even an iPad Pro is far cheaper than a MacBook.

If you do go MacBook, though, do yourself a favor and get more storage if you
can. I lived with a 64GB Air for a while, and it was miserable. If you plan to
store a lot of audio on it, and don't want to rely on networked or wired
drives, even 128GB might be too small after a while.

A question that I know is individual, but I need to get some ideas.

I am thinking of replacing my Mac Mini. I am not a power user. I do mail" and
go on the internet and maybe listen to music and definitely books. What Mac
would meet my needs. I like my Mini, but I got it in 2015 and it cannot be
expanded and only has 4 gigs of ram. Thus I cannot go past El Capitan. What do
you think. All thoughts are welcome. Still have not decided to change, but
maybe I will. Might
want a laptop.
