RE: update on my partition issue

2018-01-16 Thread Simon Fogarty
Under the usb installer disk util you can see the partition,

If you eraise or partition the drive from the drive level then you will wipe
it.

Not something someone should do unless they know what they are doing.
It makes getting to the recovery difficult.

Don't know how one loses a recovery partition but since its a hidden one,
executing the "diskutil list" command in terminal will display a list of
volumes, including the recovery partition if it exists.

Re: Selecting text from a web page.

2018-01-16 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Jessica,

There are several ways of selecting text in Safari.
1) VO-Return to start selecting, then VO-Right Arrow through the text to be
selected, and VO-Return to end the selection.
2) Make sure you have Lines available in the Web Rotor, then use Quick Nav and
select Lines. Hold down the Shift key while pressing the Down Arrow to select
the text.
3) Shift plus arrow keys.
4) Use VO-Shift-c to copy the last spoken phrase to the clipboard.

It very much depends on how the page is laid out. I’ve found on Youtube, that
lyrics are read out as one element, and VO-Shift-c works best in this case.
Cheers,

Anne

RE: update on my partition issue

2018-01-16 Thread Simon Fogarty
When you re install the os from your usb you will get the recovery partition
back automatically

If you have wiped the entire drive then you can just plug the USB in and the
installation process will start by bringing up the utilities.

Hi All:

For everyone who's interested in contact data for the dedicated accessibility
support desk service offered by Microsoft, the web page you want to bookmark is:

https://support.microsoft.com/answerdesk/accessibility

They have a phone number you can call in the U.S.:

I have it on good authority these are specialists trained especially to help
persons with disabilities use Windows and Office. They're based in Denver.

Apple is exclusive seller of Colgate's new E1 smart toothbrush with AI built in

2018-01-16 Thread M. Taylor
Apple is the only place you can buy Colgate's new artificially intelligent
toothbrush
By Avery Hartmans

. Colgate unveiled a new smart toothbrush called the E1.
. It can map your mouth, emit "sonic vibrations," and provide
real-time brushing feedback.
. The toothbrush will cost $99.95, and you can only buy it through
Apple.

Colgate is teaming up with Apple to sell you a high-tech toothbrush.
Called the E1, the "smart" electronic toothbrush gives you real-time
brushing feedback, maps your mouth, and uses "sonic vibrations" to remove
more plaque, and can upload the data it collects to an iPhone app called
Colgate Connect. The handle of the toothbrush is also equipped with
artificial intelligence, so it can coach you on your oral health over time.

To help get kids excited about brushing, Colgate even made a game within its
iPhone app. Called "Go Pirate," the game uses the toothbrush as a game
controller. The longer you brush, the more coins you'll collect.

Colgate says the toothbrush will last 10 days on a single charge.

The E1 will cost $99.95, but you'll only be able to buy it on Apple's
website or at select Apple stores. A toothbrush certainly seems like an odd
choice for Apple, but Apple's increasingly pushed into the health space with
the Apple Watch, and its online store is also home to a bevy of other
third-party health products like smart scales, LED jump ropes, golf swing
analyzers, and glucose monitors.

Apple is also reportedly making investments in its own health products, like
developing a way to measure blood sugar, and working to turn the iPhone into
a one-stop shop for all your medical information.

Best iPhone Running Belts in 2018, iMore

2018-01-16 Thread M. Taylor
Best iPhone Running Belts in 2018

Call it a fitness belt, a running belt, a fanny pack, or whatever you like,
but having a dedicated holder for your iPhone while you run is worth the
fashion faux pas.
By Lory Gil, 16 Jan 2018

I'm not an armband kinda girl. That is, I don't feel comfortable with
something strapped to my upper arm to hold my iPhone while I'm exercising,
especially if I'm running. I constantly fidget with it, trying to get the
fit just right, hoping my arm fat isn't too noticeable as I squeeze the
armband as tight as I possibly can.

That's why I prefer a running belt for my iPhone, ID, and keys when I head
out on a run. I'm already more comfortable with the fashion and personally,
I think they're much more versatile for our different body shapes. Here's a
list of the best running belts you can buy in 2018.
. Tune Belt Running Belt
. Eazymate Fashion Running Belt
. Milide Running Belt Waist Pack
. Runtasty Hydration Belt
. Waterfly Waist Bag

Tune Belt Running Belt
This is my personal favorite, but mostly because of my personal preferences.
It's got an adjustable belt with a clip lock closure. The belt itself is
very narrow, about 2 inches, and is made from stretchy neoprene with
moisture-wicking fabric. It kind of feels like a soft wetsuit.
The pouch that houses the iPhone has a dedicated Lightning port, so you can
plug in your headphones. There are also two speaker cutouts. The clear
plastic window cover is touch capacitive, so you can use your iPhone screen
without having to take it out of the pouch.
There is also a pocket on the back of the pouch that is big enough to hold
your money, credit cards, and ID. You could also put your keys in there, but
I'd recommend only taking the keys you need, so you don't have metal things
poking you in the stomach.
The belt is about 40 inches around but has enough stretch to reach something
closer to a comfortable 43 inches. It can also be adjusted down to as slim
as 13 inches.
The pouch is designed for large-screen phones like the iPhone 8 Plus, but I
use it with my iPhone X and there's plenty of room for a thick rugged case
in there, too.
You can get the Tune Belt in black for about $20.
See at Amazon

Eazymate Fashion Running Belt
I also like this stretchy band because of its minimalist design. It's
literally a big Spandex Lycra band that slips over your waist (there is no
adjustable belt). It's got a pocket on the front with two zippers (the
Amazon description shows two pockets, but it's actually one pocket with two
zippers).
There is also a practically unnoticeable pocket on the backside with two
openings (again, the description shows two pockets, but it's actually one
pocket with two openings). The pocket on the back also has a keychain clip
so you can keep track of your keys.
The band is about five inches thick and it fits snuggly to your body. In
fact, I decided to go with size medium instead of small because it's a very
tight fit. If you prefer to have the band rest on your hips a little and not
riding up on your waist, go a size larger.
If you don't use a case for your phone, only carry a couple of items with
you while you exercise, and don't want to show off that you've got an iPhone
with you, this is the perfectly hidden, comfortable band.
The Eazymate Fashion Running belt comes in black, blue, and gray and costs
about $20.

Milide Running Belt Waist Pack
If you're the type of person that feels compelled to bring a lot of stuff
with you on your workout (like all of your keys, maybe some loose change,
and some lip balm and deodorant), then you might be more comfortable with
Milide's waist pack. It's slightly more than a running belt, while still
being slim and tight for exercising. Your loose change might jingle around
while you're on the treadmill, but everything will fit comfortably inside
dedicated pouches so you can access what you need quickly.
The clip locking belt measures about 1.5 inches thick and can be adjusted to
nearly 39 inches long. If you want to slim it down, you can get to about
29.5 inches.
There are four different zipper pockets for storing all of your necessary
items, including a key pouch that has a key clip attached.
This bag also has reflective strips across the entire front, so you'll be
spotted easier if you're running in the dark.
Milide's Running Belt Waist Pack comes in black, blue, green, pink, and
orange and ranges in price from about $8 to about $13, depending on your
color option.

Runtasty Hydration Belt
Sometimes, your exercise routine calls for more than just a simple belt to
hold your phone and your keys. If you're out on a long run, you'll need to
stay hydrated and Runtasty's exercise belt has two pouches for holding
water. It even comes with two PBA free water bottles that are designed to
fit perfectly in the pockets.
The front pouch fits the largest sized phones, including the iPhone 8 Plus,
and it's partially detachable thanks to a velcro patc

Servus Credit Union Launches Apple Pay for Member Debit Cards, iPhone in Canada Blog

Servus Credit Union Launches Apple Pay for Member Debit Cards
By Gary Ng, 3 hours ago

Another credit union in Canada has added support for Apple Pay, as members
with Servus can now add their debit cards to the mobile wallet, as of today.
Just tap and go! Servus members can now use Apple Pay wherever tap is
accepted. Learn more at http://bit.ly/ServusApplePay

- Servus Credit Union (@ServusCU) 11:27 AM - Jan 16, 2018
All you need to do is the launch the Wallet app on your iPhone, then add
your debit card details. Servus says for now, Apple Pay is only for personal
accounts, but they are working to add business members "within the coming
year."

Servus also says "online and in-app payments using Apple Pay are coming
soon."
Last fall, we told you Servus was informing customers it was working on
Apple Pay, and now it's here.
Servus joins other Canadian credit unions which recently added Apple Pay
support, as Affinity, Collabria Financial, Conexus and Envision Financial
debuted the mobile wallet back in December.

How To Check if Apple is slowing down your iPhone, GeekBench

2018-01-16 Thread M. Taylor
How To Check if Apple is slowing down your iPhone
Posted Jan 16, 2018

For a long time there have been rumours among the iOS community that
upgrading iOS would make a device run slower, and as it turns out they
weren't completely false. Recently, GeekBench ran tests on various iPhones
and made their findings public. Apple was forced to admit they have been
indeed throttling CPU performance on older iPhones.

This hasn't been going on forever, according to Apple, it's happening since
iOS 10.2. But why you might ask? A lot of people believe slowing down older
iPhones would make users more open to purchasing a newer device which is
true, but Apple states there's another reason.

These devices have old batteries that have a lowered capacity due to normal
wear and tear. iOS automatically lowers the CPU voltage to reduce the
computational power. In fact, this has fixed the random shutdown issues some
users experienced last year. Of course, a degraded battery also contributes
to a slower iPhone so replacing it might still be the only solution for some
devices.

How to check if Apple is slowing down your iPhone
Regardless, you might want to check if Apple is slowing down your iPhone in
which case we've got you covered. We'll also discuss on what you can do to
fix it!

The GeekBench scores have brought Apple's throttling to light so you can use
the app yourself to check your iOS devices. It may not be free but it costs
only 0.99$ and it's definitely worth the price.

Once you download and install the app, launch it and tap the "CPU" option in
the "Select Benchmark" section.

Next, tap the "Run Benchmark" option. This will start the test and you will
need to wait for it to complete. It can take between 2 and 20 minutes so be
patient. Also, make sure low-power mode is disabled before starting the test
as this option would affect the results.

The test results include a single-core and a multi-core score for your
device. We're interested in the single-core score.

These are the average Geekbench scores for the recent iPhones:
. iPhone 6/6 Plus - 1400
. iPhone 6S/6S Plus - 2300
. iPhone SE - 2400
. iPhone 7/7 Plus - 3400

You can use them as a point of comparison or if have another iPhone model
you can check your scores against other Geekbench users here.

If your score is off by hundreds of points, it's probably being throttled by
Apple. Now that you know how to check if Apple is slowing down your iPhone,
and assuming that is the case, here are some possible fixes.

What to do if your iPhone is being throttled
As I already mentioned, the CPU throttling iOS automatically performs on
iPhones are caused by degraded batteries. Before anything else you need to
make sure your battery is actually worn out to a significant degree.
Note: For now, it seems like iPhone 7/7 Plus and newer devices are not being
throttled by Apple.

The first thing you need to do is to go to Settings -> Battery. If your
battery is significantly degraded you should see a warning like the one in
the image above. If you don't have that message that's great but you may not
be out of the woods yet.

If you own a Mac, you can also check your iPhone's battery health using an
app called coconutBattery. This is a Mac app but it will display the battery
health status for connected iOS devices as well.
I don't have an App Store app to recommend because Apple doesn't allow
developers to access detailed information about your device's battery since
iOS 10. As a result, any battery app you might find in the App Store won't
deliver.

If your battery is degraded then you have two options. The first one would
be to replace the battery. If you have an Apple Store nearby, you can take
your iPhone there and allow the staff to test it. Apple is now offering a
discount for battery replacement for older iPhones so you can get a new one
for just $29. You just need to have an iPhone 6 or later device (according
to Apple) to be eligible for the offer.
The second option is to purchase a new iPhone. Of course, getting your
battery replaced is a much cheaper alternative even without Apple's discount
but in some cases an upgrade is the best solution. After all, at some point
you need to get a new phone, right?

Simplehelp: How to Remove 'Suggested Articles' from Chrome for Android/iOS

2018-01-16 Thread M. Taylor
How to Remove 'Suggested Articles' from Chrome for Android/iOS
Posted: 15 Jan 2018 11:03 AM PST

This guide will explain how to remove the 'Suggested Content/Articles'
section from the "new tab" page in Chrome for Android or the iPhone/iPad.

When you open a new tab in Chrome for Android or Chrome for iOS, by default
the Google 'home page' will include a section of suggested articles from
around the web. Many people find this section a distraction - so we're going
to show you how to get rid of it :)

1.
Open up Chrome on your Android phone/tablet or iPhone/iPad and in the
address bar enter the URL:
chrome://flags

2.
At the top of the page of flags, locate the search box. Search for the
phrase ntp

3.
That will narrow down the list of flags and make it much easier to find the
one named Show server-side suggestions on the New Tab page. Once you've
found it, tap the button titled Default

4.
>From the list of options, select Disabled

5.
As soon as you make the change, a RELAUNCH NOW button will appear. Tap it.

6.
When Chrome restarts, open a new tab. Ta-da! The "Suggested Articles"
section will now be gone!

7.
If you'd like to remove any of the other sections on the New Tab page
(Recently Visited Bookmarks etc) simply re-open the chrome://flags page,
search for ntp again and review each flag. Switch the flags of the items you
don't want included on your New Tab page to Disabled.

8.
Eventually you'll wind up with a very neat and tidy New Tab page.

9.
If you ever decide you want one of those sections back, revisit the
chrome://flags page and change the status of that flag back to Default (or
Enabled)

Selecting text from a web page.

2018-01-16 Thread Jessica Moss
I didn’t think I’d ever need to do this until about a week ago when I needed to
find the lyrics to a song I needed to learn for choir practice. Everything was
going fine at first, sense everything we sing is well-known, with the exception
of the musicals we do at Christmas, and I can find them on google, but once
I’ve found the text portion of the lyrics on the web page, unlike on windows,
where I can do a simple shift+down arrow to select the text I want, then just
copy and paste it into a document so I can save it on my flash drive, that’s
not working on my mac. Is there something I’m missing here?

You should just be able to enter 250 in the field for the first partition and
the OS will expand the first partition.

For everyone who's interested in contact data for the dedicated

They have a phone number you can call in the U.S.:

Hi,

The error may have popped up, but the initial partitioning process must have
began and that's why you don't have that space available. No, doing this in
Terminal will not allow you to remove the Recovery Partition. the only time
you'd have the ability to do that would be when you start up from a different
MacOS such as a USB stick or external USB drive.

Re: mac sound card question

2018-01-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

You are correct in that the port is both a headphone and sound input port.
Check your settings in the Sound pane of System Prefs under the Input tab to
see if that port is the default input port. This should be automatic, but
worth a look.

Later...

Hello I am wondering if any one could tell me how to set up the mac for line in

there is only 1 jack on the mac it is a head phone jack I am thinking it may be
one of those jacks that have multiple purposes like one of those jacks that you
can use both for line in put recording or for head phones

once I get my partition issue fixed I was going to start recording some stuff
on my mac

thanks

Re: Apple watch

2018-01-16 Thread Alex Hall
The two-finger double tap and hold, then slide, is the easiest method to adjust
VoiceOver's volume. You can also go to your Watch app on iPhone, go to General
> Accessibility > VoiceOver, and change the volume there. If it's notification
sound volume you want to change, use the Watch app and go to Sounds and Haptics.

Note disk utility in high sierra sierra and elcapitan are not great for
voiceover usage.

Still workable if you take the time to learn it.

Re: mac partition questiohn

2018-01-16 Thread The wolf

I don't have a usb bootable disk

version of it I do have a usb drive so creating a bootable version won't
be a issue

but that would explain why I am having a hell of a time with the disk
utility app was unaware that they changed stuff

when I used mac OSX I was using mountain lion if memory serves
should I try to find a older version of OSX and make a bootable copy of
that to try to fix the problem?

On 1/16/2018 1:17 AM, Simon Fogarty wrote:

the partition for recovery is not large, approx. 1 gig if that.
But the best way to see this is to have a USB bootable installer and start the
machine up on to that then view disk utility and you will see everything.

Note disk utility in high sierra sierra and elcapitan are not great for
voiceover usage.

Still workable if you take the time to learn it.
