Thanks, actually, I searched it out and it’s the control, option, command, 
shift keys that do the job. I think they are added the shift key in one of the 
prior OS updates. Boy it’s tough getting old, start forgetting all kinds of 
things.

some cases it might be just fine sticking with high sierra

I have completely forgotten how to switch from Alex to the Spanish voice on my 
computer. Can anybody tell me the keyboard keystroke to switch between various 
voices I'm using sierra.

   The alt and windows keys are swapped on a Mac keyboard. These can be 
remapped in Fusion settings, keyboard.

With regard to the desktop,
Try windows key and m to bring the desktop to focus.
With alt f4,
Try holding down your fn key and using alt fn key and f4,
If your function keys are not set to normal function keys then you’ll have to 
use the fn key.
