RE: Apple watch & bluetooth headset

2019-04-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Andrew,

I do not have Apple AirPods, Series 2 so cannot comment as to how they work
with regard to switching between iPhone and Apple Watch.

However, I can tell you that with the series 1 version, switching seamlessly
between your phone and your watch, where VoiceOver is concerned anyway, is not
as, quote, seamless, quote, as Apple would have you believe.

So, I use the Plantronics Voyager Edge Bluetooth earphone for this purpose.
The edge can connect to, two, devices, simultaneously. VoiceOver works
beautifully with this device, especially when switching between iPhone and
Apple Watch.

When you activate the watch, Watch-VoiceOver speaks and, conversely, when you
activate the phone, phone-VoiceOver speaks. It is perfect.

So, when I'm out and about, and want to access my phone and/or watch,
privately, I simply pop the Edge into my ear, switch it on, and in less than 2
seconss, both the devices automatically connect, and I'm off and running.

Subject: Apple watch & bluetooth headset

Hi,

Once my first ever Apple watch has arrived, in order to be able to use it
quietly & unobtrusively, I shall want to get a reliable bluetooth headset which
I could hopefully use with both iPhone & Apple watch. Can you recommend such a
headset? I’d want to use it relaxing in a chair but also while working out but
since I don’t sleep very well, I’d like to be able to use it in bed too. Do
people mostly use headsets that cover both ears or just one? I have no sight
so I’d want to be able to hear my surroundings to somewhat.

Many thanks

Andrew

RE: A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe

2019-04-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Lorie,

You know, you make an interesting point.

While of course I can multitask while listening to human narrators, after
reading your post, I realize that I find it easier, this is to say, less
taxing, to listen to a TTS engine when multitasking.

In fact, now that I think about it, it is as if I am not drawn as deeply into
the story when a TTS engine is at the helm; still I enjoy the story.

Interesting. Very Interesting, indeed.

I've read tons of Kindle books on my iPhone. I'd prefer braille probably but
Samantha isn't bad and I can do things while I'm listening.

RE: A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe

2019-04-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Karen,

Well, now that I think about it, I use Eloquence most of the time, on all of
my Windows computers; with Alex coming in as a close second as I use him on
my Mac computers and on my Apple TV. My hearing is such that I can hear
lower frequencies more easily than middle or upper frequencies and yet, for
whatever reason, Samantha continues to be my favorite TTS engine for reading
long strings of text.

Go figure, eh?

As the saying kind of goes, beauty is in the ear of the listener. (Smile).

Maybe

Hi Mark,
I have a question about your experience. You describe the tts voice as
your beloved Samantha, suggesting that you spend allot of time with her as
a major part of your listening?
If true, might your personal history with the voice, the inflections the
pronunciations impact your appreciation?
Will let you answer if you are so enclined before making a comment.

Re: A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe

2019-04-16 Thread Maria Reyes
I would say I'm used to reading with TTS (Eloquence on the computer, and Voice
Dream Reader on the phone.) Since Samantha is the only option the Apple Watch,
I've gotten used to her voice, but on a lot of novels I read in VDR I use the
Alex voice.

How to know if they are fully charged?

Chrome for Mac OS: How do I select text

2019-04-16 Thread Daniel Gartmann

Hi,

Does anyone know how to select text from a web page in GoogleChrome for MAC?

I am on the latest Canary build and still can’t get it to work. I tried with
the Up and Down Arrow keys as well as VO+Enter to start VoiceOver text
selection.

Thanks a lot for any input as to what I am doing wrong.

Hi Andrew,

The best option here then would be the apple earpods,

 Wireless
Sync between all devices you have on the one apple id
And so far after a week I've had nothing but great response from my series 2
earpods.
They can be costly but well worth it to me.

Other than that, any Bluetooth headphones would work fine as Bluetooth devices
can be connected to both the phone and the watch at the device level.

Under settings on the watch you can connect bt devices directly,

This being the Mac list, well in name only now, lol, I do wish the
Books app worked better when doing VO-a for read from current to bottum, like
the iPhone does, turning pages as it reads and such. Now that that's out of the
way, though, as I've said on the viphone list, I like good audio books, but
once the narrator starts whispering or shouting, I'd much rather have the
level, articulate tones of Alex.

Hello Everyone,

However, for whatever reason, until recently, I've never used the VoiceOver

Not long ago, I was searching for a book in Audible, because it is not
available on BARD or on Over Drive, and found it.  The price of the audio
book was $19, $17 in Apple books.  Since the audio length of the book was
just over 5 hours, I decided to see if a Kindle edition was available.  Yes,
it was and for a mere $1.99.  So, I purchased the Kindle version and used my
beloved Samantha TTS engine to read the novel.

After I finished the Kindle version, a friend of mine purchased the audible
version.  So, I decided to give it a quick listen to see if I would like the
book any better or less with a human narrator at the proverbial helm.

You know what?  I discovered that I actually preferred the Kindle version
wit the TTS engine, better.  The funny thing is, I am absolutely certain
that I would have thoroughly enjoyed the human narrator edition had I not
experienced the TTS engine rendition, first.

Now I'm certainly not saying that a TTS engine is better than a human
narrator but I am saying, that for  me, at least, a TTS engine is definitely
a viable option for reading novels, especially when it comes to saving a few
dollars.

Apple watch & bluetooth headset

2019-04-16 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries

Many thanks

Andrew

Re: Apple watch series 4 question on cellular

2019-04-16 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Hi Simon,

I did have a long think about the cellular side of things and decided to go
with GPS only as it is cheaper and it would be cheaper to run. I’m not a great
talker so this facility would certainly be under-used in my case. It’s
arriving tomorrow. Hurrah!.

Re: My Apple watch series 4 is arriving tomorrow

2019-04-16 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Dear Mark,

Thank you and Simon for the vital info. Mark, there’s no need to feel bad
about anything. After all, the watch hasn’t arrived yet, and I now have the
correct steps to take and I feel well-prepared. We all make mistakes one time
or another. :)

I’m sure I’ll be boring everyone with more questions before long but each time
I’d better start another thread. I need to know, for instance, what glances
are, and what type of bluetooth headphones that would connect both to iPhone
and Apple watch people use.

Many thanks

Re: A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe

2019-04-16 Thread Angie Nutt
I have used various voices on my iPhone to read Kindle books ever since this
was possible. Since getting a braille display I use that mostly but there are
times when I still use speech. Samantha is a particularly good voice for
reading I think.

I tend to choose a voice I feel will best fit the book I’m reading. For
instance: I was reading Mary Poppins earlier so decided on Serena. Now I’m
reading an American book so am using Samantha. I love the choices I have!

All the best
Angie
