Well I’ll agree they’re bloody expensive (£399 here). But if I have to get an
iPhone I’d rather it be plus-sized. Data connectivity is not critical to me,
but remember, it represents an extra burden (radio you may not be using, and
the need for a SIM card). If Apple could just make a slightly smaller iPad Mini
…

Ironically, I just looked at the current iPad Mini and it fits the bill almost
exactly, except the size. Also, it has the E-SIM—so it works, even without a
SIM card, and gets you extra flexibility when you’re out and about.

Apple is just trolling me now. I’ll do what I can with this iPod (arriving two
days time), and I’ll find a nice drawer for it if it ends up nothing more than
an iOS testing device. Either way it’ll be useful. Maybe if I spent some
money on a new bedside shelf?

RE: new mac books

Yeah Hi Tim,

I kind of guessed as much but thought there might be something we don’t know of
down under,
Hell Petrus and I have no access to apple stores like you guys or even
Australia have.

If I can’t get it replaced via insurance then I’ll have to splash out and
purchase a customised 2017 MBA with the older and nicer keyboard style,

Although the Pro is a nice machines.

Re: new mac books

2019-06-02 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
If you buy a Mac, you’re committing yourself to Apple’s hardware design
decisions. You’re also acquiring a well integrated combination of hardware and
software that is generally reliable at the operating system level, and which
supports a good variety of applications. If you like this  trade-off, then
that’s fine – otherwise, it’s time to look elsewhere, at least until Apple’s
next redesign, when you’ll have another chance to evaluate whether the hardware
is to your liking.

Unfortunately, the other options have trade-offs too…

Windows-based systems have good software support, good accessibility, and a
greater variety of hardware options from multiple manufacturers. However, in my
experience, they take more work to maintain (especially so far as security is
concerned). I also don’t like Microsoft’s approach to hardware drivers, which
are developed by each of the hardware manufacturers. If drivers or hardware
components cause system crashes, these can be very difficult to diagnose – I’ve
been in that situation. I’ve also encountered more screen reader and
application crashes under Windows than elsewhere.

Linux-based systems tend to be reliable, and support a variety of hardware from
various sources. The accessibility of the graphical user interfaces (there are
several of them) isn’t as comprehensive as what you’ll find under Mac OS or
Microsoft Windows, and there are plenty of those “rough edges” to make work
difficult at times. The accessibility of the Linux command line and console
interfaces is superb, however, so for those of us who can work with command
line/console applications and a graphical browser, it’s a very good
environment. Hardware drivers tend to be community maintained and centrally
managed, which in my view is a positive attribute.

Chrome OS is a variant of Linux that primarily runs a Chrome browser. If you
can do what you need using Web-based applications, it could be an option. The
accessibility seemed quite good when I last tested it, but I haven’t spent much
time with Chrome OS recently.

The conclusion: they all have benefits and shortcomings. Choose the trade-offs
that best suit your situation and purchase accordingly.

Agreed; seems much more likely that this will be Apple’s opportunity to move us
all into the streaming world. Never say never, I suppose, but at best iTunes
will be in the Utilities folder or something. I can’t imagine them trying to
keep any aspect of the local library management stuff, ripping, syncing, and
all that, around for longer than is absolutely necessary for Apple to carry out
its master plan to get iOS and Macs supping from the same streams. Maybe
they’ll keep iTunes Match or something, but even then, seeing as how that’s
part of Apple Music …

that there's a bad sector or block on that partition, but we'll only go
there if things continue to fail.

Re: Unmountable Partition

2019-06-02 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
After hour of moving another pile of data to/from other partitions
in an effort to find a new home for TM, I got a dialogue from TM saying
it cannot access the read only partition.

Based on what I read online, fsck had been running all those hours
and when it completed. it left the partition in read only mode.
Apparently fsck is an invisible process.

So now I ask, if I move the TM backup to a new partition, will TM be
ok with that when I point it there?

Re: new mac books

2019-06-02 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I've not heard of such a thing and I really doubt that it will ever be an
option. They may design a new non-butterfly option at some point, but I
believe, from history, that once they move forward with something like the new
design, you're out of luck with them going back.

Does anyone know if there is such a customize option for the mac book line?

Re: make 2 contacts for personal and business use,

2019-06-02 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

If you wish to sync the contacts through iCloud, then you'll need two separate
Apple ID's. If you turn off Contacts within iCloud, then you should be able to
maintain just one Apple ID, but the business iPhone would not have it's
contacts syncing or saved in iCloud. The second option works fine, but you'll
need to make sure that you maintain a good backup routine as those contacts
would only reside on the iPhone.

Re: System dialogue displayed?

2019-06-02 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
I get this behaviour as well. For some time, there’s a mysterious window
appearing on the screen. If you activate windows chooser menu with vo+f2
pressed twice, you will find an untitled window. If you press vo+spacebar or
enter to go to it, you will find that there doesn’t appear to be anything in
it. I have no idea what it is and ignore it now but I do agree the constant
reference to it by vO is somewhat irritating.

A few questions?

2019-06-02 Thread Matt Turner
Hi folks.
Just wondering if this could be done?
is there a way to customize the way mail reads?
For example, I might want VO to say subject, from, unread.
also is there a way to change how vo says _?
I’ve set the punctuation to none, but it still says _.

new mac books

2019-06-02 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Listers,

It's looking like I'm going to have to replace my mid 2013 11" MacBookAir,

Currently the closest replacement would be the still currently available 2017
version of the mac book air,
Apart from only being able to have 16GB ram in them it's an ok machine if
spec'ed out completely,

However what I'm really wondering is if it's really possible for apple to put
the older non butterfly keyboard in to something in the mac book pro range?

I've been using a mac book pro 2018 for almost a year and I still can't get use
to the keys on the keyboard.
Preferring my 11" MBA keyboard.
Does anyone know if there is such a customize option for the mac book line?

The ram and processor I like but the storage is my concern unless your running

apple have just confirmed the refund for the MacBook by email. I decided that a
mac Mini would meet my use-cases more wholesomely than a MacBook. Initially the
plan was to stick to the same hardware parameters - 16GB ram, 256GB ssd and an
i5 processor. The nice man from Apple however is offering me a much more
impressive machine for a very reasonable price. it has a 32GB ram, 256GB ssd
and an i7 processor. yes, plenty oomf there ladies and gentlemen but my
question is, do I need that much power given what I would use it for? To recap,
my two main use-cases are: (a) running copies of MS Windows simultaneously on
VMWare Fusion and (b) programming for Mac OS and iOS. At a later date I might
even decide to load it with Logic pro and N.I. for making music, but that
really is not a priority at this point in time.
In short, will a machine of that description offer marked, significant
improvement over one with the specification I previously had in mind?
Thoughts from everyone and specially the more experienced hacks would be
gratefully received.
Incidentally, I am typing this in the web box which offers me no spell-check;
so apologies for any spelling error.
With thanks, Benji

Subject: Re: New iPod touch announced

I reluctantly bought it. I hope I don’t get buyer’s remorse, even though I’m
almost sure I will. My problem is that my current iPod is an iPhone 6S Plus, a
great device at the right size and with Touch ID, but with inadequate storage.
An iPod Touch is a clear upgrade—or it would be, if not for the loss of Touch
ID and the smaller size. But at least it’s grabable, fits on my bedside shelf
(unlike an iPad Mini), and you don’t need a SIM to activate the bloody thing
every time. Plus of course it’s a general-purpose device in a way that the
iPad or iPhone isn’t, can be used tethered as well as on Wi-Fi, and runs iPhone
applications I like and in the right format.

Let’s face it, Apple is only keeping the iPod alive for the benefit of existing
buyers here. They don’t like it because it stands in the way of their quest
for world domination through their indispensable iOS devices, like iPhones and
