Okay, while waiting, I found the Overdrive app for the Mac, and downloaded.
Then after the files were installed, I opened the Audio Book Binder app

RE: iPad Pro and smart keyboard

2019-08-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Simon,

Are you absolutely certain that the keyboard stops working when entering
passwords?

I say this because one thing I've noticed is that the feedback clicks, as you
type in a password, do not correspond to the actual entering of text.

So, unless you can see the display, a totally blind person might think that
text entry has ceased even though text is being entered, albeit without click
feedback.

This little glitch drove me absolutely bonkers the first couple of days that I
owned my iPad. Then, I had a sighted person sit with me and, sure enough, even
though the feedback sound would cut out, text was being entered.

Just an idea.

Hi List,

I have an iPad Pro 11” with an apple smartkeyboard for it,

The iPad is running IOS 12.4 which is the latest current production os.

What I’m finding is that every so often the keyboard stops typing in password
fields mainly but sometimes edit boxes
But mainly in password fields.

No matter what I do I can’t get it to start typing while I’m usin the device.

Unless I forget it for a while and then come back to it and it starts working
correctly again.

Has anyone else struck this before?

And if so what could you do to get past the problem.

Cheers,

How to stop iCloud calendar spam and junk mail, Apple Insider

2019-08-26 Thread M. Taylor
How to stop iCloud calendar spam and junk mail
By: William Gallagher
Monday, August 26, 2019 3:15 PM

If you're suddenly being bothered by iCloud calendar spam invitations, here
are the steps you need to take to get rid of it all in Apple Mail on Mac and
iOS.

Apple generally does such a good job of cutting out spam that we don't even
have to think about it. Yet, sometimes there will suddenly be a new tidal
wave of the stuff that breaks through. While Apple did seem to have dealt
with the biggest one some years ago, attacks are on the rise again.

Here's what to do about it -both to rid yourself of the events today and
hopefully never get any again.

Calendar invitation spam
This type of spam will come in two flavors. One is when you get some junk
email and it includes an invitation alongside the usual Accept, Decline, or
Maybe buttons. The problem here is that whichever of these buttons you
click, it sends a notification back to the sender.

Which means that sender now knows your email address is a real and active
one. Accept, Decline or Maybe are each just the same way of telling that
spammer to target you more.

So you can't press any of the buttons. You could just delete the email, but
there is a better way -and it's provided by Apple.

When that happens, and it's an iCloud invitation, Apple has you covered. In
the email, right under those buttons, there will be a line that offers you a
way out.

"Do not recognize this sender? Report Junk," it says.

Click on Report Junk and then delete the email.

The harder, more intensely irritating spam event, is when this invitation is
not sent over email but is instead pushed out by an assailant. If an event
has appeared in your calendar without you adding it, that's what has
happened.

When that's the case, though, this event hasn't just been added to your
overall Calendar, it's actually been added to one calendar in your set of
them. If you've never tried dividing work and home events into different
calendars that get displayed together, you may not even have known that you
can do this.

As well as, for instance, "home" or "work" calendars, though, you can create
as many as you like and name them in any way you want.

So create one called Spam.

You can create a new calendar and move all spam into it. Then either don't
display that calendar, or delete it entirely -along with those events

On the Mac, you do this by:
. Open Calendar
. Choose File/New Calendar
. In the Calendar sidebar, click to name this new calendar

On iOS devices, you instead:
. Tap Calendars at the bottom of the screen
. Tap Add Calendar
. Name it
. Tap Done

In either case, you now have a new calendar and by default, it's always
displayed alongside your regular one. You could choose to stop it being
displayed by just unticking it, on the Mac or iOS, and so never see anything
in there.

To get of these errant events, though, click on one and assign it to your
Spam calendar. Do that to as many as you have, and then do delete the
calendar.

On the Mac:
. Right click on the calendar
. Choose Delete
. From the dialog that appears, choose Delete again

On iOS:
. Tap Calendars
. Tap on the i button next to your Spam calendar
. Scroll to the bottom
. Tap Delete Calendar

In either case, you have removed that calendar -and also all of the spam
events in it. And you didn't send the junk mailer any notification.

Stop it from happening again
Apple changed its systems specifically to help stop you getting any more of
this, and it did so by altering Calendar's preferences -on iCloud.com.
There's nothing you can do, not officially, on a Mac app outside of Safari,
or on iOS device, but you can set a preference online.

It'd be good if this were a setting in Mail on iOS or Mac, but at least here
in iCloud it should catch spam events before you see them
. Log in to iCloud.com
. Click on Calendar
. Click on the cog icon at bottom left
. Choose Preferences
. Click Advanced
. Select Receive event invitations as an Email

Now if someone wants to spam you, they'll have to try to call you and hassle
you that way -and we've details on how to reduce those calls, too.

How to conserve your cellular data use on iPhone and iPad, 9 to 5 Mac

2019-08-26 Thread M. Taylor
How to conserve your cellular data use on iPhone and iPad

While "unlimited" data plans have made a return at many carriers, they still
aren't truly unlimited. When you hit a certain amount of iPhone data use,
you'll like either be throttled or charged for more data. On the other hand,
maybe you only pay for a certain amount of data, and want to avoid going
over.
Either way, there are a few ways in iOS to help conserve your cellular data
use.

How to track your iPhone data use
First and foremost, you should know how to see how much data you've used.
While many carriers offer their own respective tools for tracking data
usage, it's often easier to see that information directly on your iPhone, as
seen in the screenshot above.
First open the Settings app, then look for the "Cellular" menu. Here, you
can see a breakdown of which applications have used the most data, and even
disable cellular data for specific applications. For instance, if you see
that an app you rarely used has been using data, you can simply flip the
toggle to prevent it from ever using cellular data again.

Disable Wi-Fi Assist
In many ways, Wi-Fi Assist in iOS is a double edged sword. Apple says that
Wi-Fi Assist is designed to "automatically use cellular data when Wi-Fi
connectivity is poor." Oftentimes, however, you might think you're solely on
Wi-Fi, when actually Wi-Fi Assist has kicked in and you're burning through
your data.
To disable Wi-Fi Assist, go to the Settings app on your iPhone, then choose
"Cellular" and scroll all the way to the bottom. There, you should see a
toggle for Wi-Fi Assist that you can easily turn off.
This should also show you how much data you've used through Wi-Fi Assist. In
my case, I've burned through 404MB of cellular data through Wi-Fi Assist,
which could be quite a lot depending on how much data you're allotted every
month.

Prevent certain features from using cellular data at all
Another easy way to cutback on your cellular data usage is to prevent
traditionally data-heavy features from running at all, unless you're on
WiFi. This entails turning off or limiting certain features.

Disable iCloud Drive
1. Open Settings
2. Choose "Cellular"
3. Scroll down and look for "iCloud Drive"
4. Disable using your cellular network for transferring documents and
data

Turn off App Store downloads
1. Open Settings
2. Scroll to "iTunes and App Store"
3. Look for the "Cellular Data" heading
4. Disable "Automatic Downloads"
5. Tap "App Downloads"
6. Choose "Always Ask"

Disable Apple Music streaming
1. Open Settings
2. Scroll to "Music"
3. Look for the "Cellular Data" menu
4. Either disable Cellular Data completely, or disable it for
downloading and/or streaming

Disable cellular use for Photos
1. Open Settings
2. Scroll to "Photos"
3. Look for "Cellular Data"
4. Disabling cellular data completely will restrict updates to Wi-Fi,
including Shared Albums and iCloud Photos
5. Disable "Unlimited Updates"

Disable Background App Refresh
1. Open Settings
2. Choose "General"
3. Look for the "Background App Refresh" menu
4. You can either disable Background App Refresh for individual apps,
for all apps in all situations, or limit Background App Refresh to only when
connected to Wi-Fi

Turn off iPhone data use completely
If you've completely burned through almost all of your data for the month,
and you need to ensure that you absolutely don't get charged overage fees,
the best solution is to turn off cellular data completely.
To do this, open Settings and tap "Cellular." Then, simply flip the toggle
next to "Cellular Data." This will completely disable data use, and ensure
you don't go over your cap for the month.

Wrap up
Other ways to preserve data use on iOS include downloading music for offline
listening, using Reading List in Safari to save articles for later, and
avoiding high-intensity things like streaming video while not connecting to
Wi-Fi.

To start, if you go to the Fusion settings and select the Keyboard
category, on the Mac Host Keyboard tab, uncheck Mac Host Keyboard.

Then, when the Windows VM is loaded, disable Voiceover and press
command g to grab the keyboard.

Go to full screen with command control f (this is a toggle). Hold
the command and control keys and press the f key. Do this quickly.

If you want to switch to the Mac then return to Windows, enable
Voiceover and then command control to ungrab the keyboard. This is why
you want to press these keys then f quickly when toggling full screen.

To get back to Windows, go to the Window menu on the menu bar,
select your VM and press return. Disable VO and grab the keyboard.

It took me a while to get this right but if I don't rush, it works.
Oh and when I am finished with the VM, I toggle full screen off and shut
down Windows then take the same steps to return to the Mac.

avoid pressing certain key combinations that could inadvertently throw
you into the Mac environment. It otherwise works well

By the way, there are many reasons one wants to run Windows on a

Hi,

If this is the keyboard that connects via the magnetic strip, not Bluetooth,
then I usually just wiggle the keyboard on the magnetic strip to regain
connection and life is good. You may need to clean the magnetic strip as well
with a clean damp cloth.

Re: VMware fusion 11 pro or Home?

2019-08-26 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I just looked at the new VM dialog in VMWare 11.1 Professional and there is an
option to install Windows 3.1, so don’t worry about older OS’s. The only major
issue I have with VMWare is that caps lock key can not be used as a screen
reader key unless significant mucking is done on the VM. I wish I could
dedicate my Dell USB keyboard to only work with my VM’s and be ignored by MacOS
much like my Braille displays are if I plug them in after the VM is active.
Also, don’t answer the permissions questions wrong when you first start VMWare.
I have had cases where because the granularity on the Security systems setting
page is not specific enough, I have had to reset security settings for an
entire app or computer in order to get some functionality. This is mostly the
case with scripting functions where one application is asking to control
another application, but can occur in other situations too.
Best Wishes,
Jonathan C. Cohn

iPad Pro and smart keyboard

2019-08-26 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi List,

I have an iPad Pro 11" with an apple smartkeyboard for it,

The iPad is running IOS 12.4 which is the latest current production os.

What I'm finding is that every so often the keyboard stops typing in password
fields mainly but sometimes edit boxes
But mainly in password fields.

No matter what I do I can't get it to start typing while I'm usin the device.

Unless I forget it for a while and then come back to it and it starts working
correctly again.

Has anyone else struck this before?

And if so what could you do to get past the problem.

Cheers,

Simon F

I personally find running VM ware fusion a nightmare to run. I would recommend

2019-08-26 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Yeah absolutely,

If it can take windows 10 then it will take windows 7.

I am running 10 enterprise in my vm fusion 10, I've not updated to 11 simply
because my former employer purchased the vm licence and I resigned from that
company but didn't to their knowledge give the software licence back to them.

Shame I couldn't keep the mac book pro or mac mini

You'll be fine but if your that worried then purchase the pro

Mastering the Macintosh E- Book

2019-08-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
HI to those members that were after the Mastering the Macintosh e-book,

I'm sorry to say that after trying to get this book from my books app on both
my iPhone and an iPod touch and into iTunes I have not been able to get it
downloaded on to ether my mac book pro or my windows machine.

It looks like the book is only there in my library but wont let me share or
save it off the devices.

My apologies

Regards,

Simon F

so by going to whatever folder you want! just use that shortcut, one of the
many way to do things on the mac.
