Re: new mail sound on the mac

2019-09-02 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
I haven’t looked in iTunes on the Mac yet as I couldn’t remember seeing
anything in there regarding ringtones or alert tones. It is the sound effect on
the mail app on the Mac that I wanted to change

RE: A Strange Speaker Sound Scenario with Mark's Apple Watch, Series 4, with LTE

2019-09-02 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Mark,

Had a similar situation with my series 2 watch after swimming in a pool.

But mine lasted 3 days before correcting itself.

I ended up not getting it replaced and sticking with the original.

Weird I know, but hey what do you do.

As for more of a concern,
Why did the apple genius bar not know if the replacement would allow you to use
apple pay a product of their own,

Surely the company providing the payment option should accept their own
payment option.

And why did the genius not know this off the top of their head.

Subject: A Strange Speaker Sound Scenario with Mark's Apple Watch, Series 4,
with LTE

Hello All,

As the following makes absolutely no sense to me or any of the Apple Techs with
whom I discussed this matter, I will simply list what happened earlier
today:

1.
With Apple Watch powered off, ran tiny stream of water over device to clean.
At the same time, a visiting friend, with an identical device, did same, using
same water source.

2.
Upon powering up Apple watch, speaker sound was muffled on my device but not on
friend's device. Attempted to clear water from speaker using Water lock
feature, no fewer than 15 times. No success.

3.
Rebooted my device several times but speaker remained muffled.

4.
Went to Apple Store Genius Barr where they heard muffled sound as compared to
friend's device, with regard to VoiceOver. They, like I, checked every
conceivable setting on the device and all was as it should have been.

5.
Because I have Apple Care Plus on my Watch, for faster service, used onboard
Apple Support app to begin replacement process, said process having Apple ship
me a new device, overnight delivery, via FedEx. I began this process while at
the genius Barr, using my beloved iPhone 8 Plus.

6.
In order to begin the replacement process, I had to unpair my watch from my
phone; then, the Apple tech could set up the shipping details and create the
RMA log.

7.
The final step in the process was to authorize Apple to put a hold on my credit
card before they ship the new watch. Then, if I do not return the old watch
after having received the new one, they can charge me for the new watch. I
have 3 days to complete the final step in the replacement process.
I decided to wait until I returned home before providing my payment info as I
was not certain if they would accept Apple Pay or if I would have to enter my
card info, directly. The people at the Genious Barr could not give me a
definitive answer so I decided to wait until I was in a more secure and quiet
location before proceeding.

8.
On the way home, in the car, I decided to pair my current device back to my
phone so that I could continue to use it, muffled as it was, while I waited for
the new watch to arrive.

9.
During the pairing process, the sound quality switched from muffled to normal.
I heard it happen as I had VoiceOver enabled during the process.
It was weird, to be totally honest. The sound simply returned to normal. I
mean it was flawless. Mind you, the time between when the Apple genius heard
the sound and the time in which it returned to normal could not have
been longer than 15 minutes. After paring the watch, I ran it through a
battery of sound tests, comparing it with my friend's watch, and they were
virtually identical.

10.
Back at home, I ran both my watch and my friend's watch under some water, just
as I had done, earlier. This time, however, the sound on both watches was
perfect.

11.
Conducted more sound comparison tests and was satisfied that my watch is in
good working order.

12.
Called Apple Care to update them on the status of my watch and the
representative documented the episode, thoroughly and we both agreed to leave
the current RMA in place and allow it to expire on Thursday. This means that
should I authorize Apple to place a hold on my card, then a new replacement
watch will be overnighted to me; otherwise this particular RMA will expire. By
the way, the process does accept payment via Apple Pay.

Finally, as I stated at the outset, I have absolutely no idea why un-pairing
and then, subsequently, re-pairing the watch to the phone should have made any
difference in sound quality whatsoever, but, today, for whatever reason, it did.

Mark

RE: Speed Test Results - Was: Double-Tapping to Send Mail?

2019-09-02 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Gents,

I just ran that speed test on a wired machine and got a
Ping of 22milli seconds,
Download:192.57 Megabits
Upload: 171.32 megabits

So as showing wired is faster than a wifi test

But alsoalso the wifi router and type of connection makes a big difference also.

with whom I discussed this matter, I will simply list what happened earlier
today:

1.
With Apple Watch powered off, ran tiny stream of water over device to clean.
At the same time, a visiting friend, with an identical device, did same,
using same water source.

2.
Upon powering up Apple watch, speaker sound was muffled on my device but not
on friend's device. Attempted to clear water from speaker using Water lock
feature, no fewer than 15 times. No success.

3.
Rebooted my device several times but speaker remained muffled.

4.
Went to Apple Store Genius Barr where they heard muffled sound as compared
to friend's device, with regard to VoiceOver. They, like I, checked every
conceivable setting on the device and all was as it should have been.

5.
Because I have Apple Care Plus on my Watch, for faster service, used onboard
Apple Support app to begin replacement process, said process having Apple
ship me a new device, overnight delivery, via FedEx. I began this process
while at the genius Barr, using my beloved iPhone 8 Plus.

6.
In order to begin the replacement process, I had to unpair my watch from my
phone; then, the Apple tech could set up the shipping details and create the
RMA log.

7.
The final step in the process was to authorize Apple to put a hold on my
credit card before they ship the new watch. Then, if I do not return the
old watch after having received the new one, they can charge me for the new
watch. I have 3 days to complete the final step in the replacement process.
I decided to wait until I returned home before providing my payment info as
I was not certain if they would accept Apple Pay or if I would have to enter
my card info, directly. The people at the Genious Barr could not give me a
definitive answer so I decided to wait until I was in a more secure and
quiet location before proceeding.

8.
On the way home, in the car, I decided to pair my current device back to my
phone so that I could continue to use it, muffled as it was, while I waited
for the new watch to arrive.

9.
During the pairing process, the sound quality switched from muffled to
normal. I heard it happen as I had VoiceOver enabled during the process.
It was weird, to be totally honest. The sound simply returned to normal. I
mean it was flawless. Mind you, the time between when the Apple genius
heard the sound and the time in which it returned to normal could not have
been longer than 15 minutes. After paring the watch, I ran it through a
battery of sound tests, comparing it with my friend's watch, and they were
virtually identical.

10.
Back at home, I ran both my watch and my friend's watch under some water,
just as I had done, earlier. This time, however, the sound on both watches
was perfect.

11.
Conducted more sound comparison tests and was satisfied that my watch is in
good working order.

12.
Called Apple Care to update them on the status of my watch and the
representative documented the episode, thoroughly and we both agreed to
leave the current RMA in place and allow it to expire on Thursday. This
means that should I authorize Apple to place a hold on my card, then a new
replacement watch will be overnighted to me; otherwise this particular RMA
will expire. By the way, the process does accept payment via Apple Pay.

Finally, as I stated at the outset, I have absolutely no idea why un-pairing
and then, subsequently, re-pairing the watch to the phone should have made
any difference in sound quality whatsoever, but, today, for whatever reason,
it did.

Mark

Hi Simon,

Oops, sorry. Should have used proper abbreviations. Yeah, 268 Mbps this
evening. Bytes would be better, of course. This is on a WiFi connection.

The difference simply due to location and a platform that my city got to

We both use the same ISP bt use different routers / modems

I can pretty much say that Petrus would have better speeds on his connection

Hi,

It kind of depends on a number of factors. If doing this on an iOS device, it
may display slower results. On a Mac, it depends on whether your ISP is a
cable provider or ADSL or something more like fibre. I suggest you run it two
or three times to see if the results differ.

Re: New Mac User

2019-09-02 Thread d.prater via MacVisionaries

I've used a Mac for a good 7 or more years. Int time, I've used
Windows, the Mac, and several forms of Linux. The Mac, nor VoiceOver, is
perfect, but for me, especially for reading Mail, writing documents, or even
dabbling in code, the Mac is great for beginners, and advanced users too.
VoiceOver can hold your hand through any task. You'd lead it, of course, just
like the iPhone, but it would help a lot. Once you're used to things, VoiceOver
can be used in amazing ways, like only saying the subject of an and nothing
more if you want, making going through email an absolute joy compared to the
Windows screen readers. Also, one can move and resize windows, and even single
controls. One can know if an app launches in the background. With the Mac
itself, you can have time announced. Spell checking, are built in. Auto correct
is a joy to use. All this could be done in Windows if Microsoft wanted, but it
hasn't yet. So, for now, Mac is the operating system of the future, for general
computing, until iPad takes place.

Marie, I was referring not to the QuickStart tutorial, but to the getting
started guide. That’s a much more in-depth tutorial it’s an actual book of
chapters devoted to various functions of voiceover. It’s the bottom most entry
in the help system just below the QuickStart tutorial. It also has appendices
for various keystrokes and functions etc.  Good luck.

Marie, don’t forget to plow
through the getting started guide. You can find it by pressing the help menu
keys VO plus h. The getting started guide is down at the bottom of the list.
You might find some trouble in browsing at first, but try to bring up the
table of contents and you’ll find a wealth of information about using
voiceover on the Mac. Also check out the other items in the voiceover help
menu while you’re at it. I think you’ll find all you need there along with
questions on list you should learn quite quickly.

Hi Marie and
others,

Welcome to
the list Marie, what are the podcasts you’ve listened to so far? I may have
herd some of them already but you never no. I’m also a new user, well I’ve
been using a Mac since January but still consider myself a beginner. I only
ever used windows machines and never liked it, loads of people told me not
to get a Mac but I’m glad I did. The folks this list have been a huge help

Yes, well I am in the dining room at the other end of the house and it is in

Hi,

Excellent ping time, and if you're on fibre like Simon mentioned, that's not
particularly quick, but really not that bad for most uses. Where you are in
your house, where you are in relation to the WiFi transmitter and other devices
that could be interfering with the signal are all factors that can make it so
that your speed isn't as good as expected. Time of day can also be a factor.

Hi,

It kind of depends on a number of factors. If doing this on an iOS device, it
may display slower results. On a Mac, it depends on whether your ISP is a
cable provider or ADSL or something more like fibre. I suggest you run it two
or three times to see if the results differ.

Dear Petrus,
I am sorry for scaring you.
It seems that you can change the mail sounds easily.
Its only the empty trash and move to trash sounds that makes you jump through
hoops.
Again, I am sorry for the confusion.
So try this, I just did it . I pasted in a new .aiff file and it worked. I also
tried a .m4r file, but it did not work.
While on the Desktop, go to the go Menu.
While pressing the VO keys, press the down arrow to Library.
press VO+Space to choose it.
Now open Library and choose Sounds.
This folder may be empty.
Paste your new mail sound here.
It may need to be in the .aiff format,

Thanks,
Rob

Re: Double-Tapping to Send Mail?

2019-09-02 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

How about using the Item Chooser instead. Once you've opened the linked page,
press VO-i to bring up the Item Chooser, type the word "start", then press
return. That should land you on the Start button. The only reasons I can
think why it's not working for you is if that site is not available in New
Zealand, or if you're going to the wrong site.

Possibly you did get it mistaken

Hi,

Tabbing multiple times after the Subject line is normal. The delay in sending
would not have anything to do with signature choices. If that message came up

appear, then there's no connection between those items. Do you have good WiFi
signal and a fairly fast internet speed? You can check internet speed at

sent out quickly.
I’m wondering if it might be related to whether I have more than one signature
to pick from in my settings. Sometimes I’m presented with a decision to choose

Also interesting is that when I compose a new message, I need to tab twice
after typing in a subject, to get past the name and signature elements, to drop
into the message body. Is that also a normal experience?

RE: Speed Test Results - Was: Double-Tapping to Send Mail?

2019-09-02 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Tim,

For Petrus and I
We’re both on fibre connections mine is meant to be download of up to 1 Gb but
that’s top speed,I’m lucky if I get half that on a good day.

Petrus I’m not sure of his speeds but would be getting upwards of similar to
mine,

The difference simply due to location and a platform that my city got to
experience first in the country,

We both use the same ISP bt use different routers / modems

I can pretty much say that Petrus would have better speeds on his connection
than I would get on mine.

Hi,

It kind of depends on a number of factors. If doing this on an iOS device, it
may display slower results. On a Mac, it depends on whether your ISP is a
cable provider or ADSL or something more like fibre. I suggest you run it two
or three times to see if the results differ.

Hi,

Tabbing multiple times after the Subject line is normal. The delay in sending

signal and a fairly fast internet speed? You can check internet speed at

sent out quickly.
I’m wondering if it might be related to whether I have more than one signature

Also interesting is that when I compose a new message, I need to tab twice
after typing in a subject, to get past the name and signature elements, to drop
into the message body. Is that also a normal experience?

Re: Speed Test Results - Was: Double-Tapping to Send Mail?

2019-09-02 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

It kind of depends on a number of factors. If doing this on an iOS device, it
may display slower results. On a Mac, it depends on whether your ISP is a
cable provider or ADSL or something more like fibre. I suggest you run it two
or three times to see if the results differ.

 Hi,
Try adding your new email sound,
But if it doesn’t work, follow the below instructions on disabling the
 security feature.

If you are using High Sierra or Mojave,
There is a security feature you must disable first.
To do this, Boot into recovery mode,
by pressing command+R at boot up.
Wait awhile and press command+F5 to start Voice Over.
Now go to Terminal and paste in this command and press enter
 csrutil disable
OK, you can restart the mac, make your changes and come back to recovery
mode and reenable the feature by pasting the following in terminal:
 csrutil enable

First you have to find the sound folder.
While on the Desktop, go to the go Menu.
While pressing the VO keys, press the down arrow to Library.
 press VO+Space to choose it.
Now open Library and choose Sounds.
 This folder may be empty.
Paste your new mail sound here.
It may need to be in the .aiff format, but I’m not sure. It is what I’m
 using.

Here is how to change the empty trash and move to trash sounds:

, use your Finder and click through to:
Macintosh HD -> System -> Library -> Components
When you get there, find CoreAudio.component in the list and VO Space on
 it.
 Then click Show Package Contents.
 Then go to:
 Shared Support -> System Sounds
The drag-to-trash audio file can be found in dock.
The empty-trash audio file can be found in finder.
You can rename the origional file instead of deleteing it.
Now paste in your new files with the same name as the original ones.

Hi Anders,
It’s okay, I decided not to change the sounds on my Mac in the mail app, aside
from the ones that are already available. I was hoping it would be easy to
install the sounds on my Mac that I purchased through the iTunes Store on my
iPhone so I could use them. It doesn’t look like it is simple and it’s not

Hello,

No, I don't know how to do it. Is it possible to do something like that in a
classic Swift? Please tell me privately the procedure. Thank you very much.

Re: Blindly work with Xcode

2019-09-02 Thread Barry Hadder

Tibor,

What version of Xcode are you using? You can get the Xcode beta with a
free account. You might want to consider using SwiftUI instead of
interface builder. The only problem being is that it is still very young.

Let’s take one thing at a time.

In interface builder, you can imbed a view controller in a navigation
controller and it will make all of the necessary connections for you. Do
you know how to do that? The back button is provided automatically when
you do this.

Log in user questions

2019-09-02 Thread Marie
I am using a loner at the moment but know it would be advantageous to be signed
in to my Apple user, so a couple of questions.
Will the settings I have already made here transfer to the new user login or,
are they tied to the User?
If I make the switch to my Apple ID, is it as easy to reset to factory as on
the IPhone and IPad?
Last, do I just select the switch users option on the logon dialog to sign in
with Apple ID?

OK, I ran the speed test and the results appear to be significantly slower

Is this a normal characteristic or am I being overcharged for service?

Well I need to correct myself again.
‘@‘ does mean command, but you don’t want to use that. Use control-space to
set a mark. The first definition shouldn’t be there.

Hi,
“^\@“ means control-space. In other words \@ is a code for the space character.
FOR SOME REASON, IT IS DEFINED TWICE.
You have to press control-x twice to select the text from the mark.
Once again, I can confirm that it does work.
Yank and select is a functionality from the emacs text editor where you can use
something called the kill ring. It basically gives you the ability to cut
multiple text to a clip board and recall specific items at will.

Hmmm. I just tried it for fun. VO-space on the link I provided. In the
HTML/Web area, VO-right to find the "Start Speed Test" button and VO-space on
it, VO should announce "Download Test has started". It will announce another

Hi Tim,
I checked out that link for the internet speed and could not work out how to

Re: Copying text from a web site

2019-09-02 Thread Leo

These are the keystrokes as they have been defined in the dict file:

control plus Y, yank and select.

control plus backslash plus command, set mark.

control plus w, delete the mark.

control plus x, select the mark.

control plus space, set mark

Apparently, there are two keystrokes that perform the same action, and I
don't know why; however, only the first one works for me when selecting
a portion of the text.

In my mac, pressing control plus space does not perform anything unless
after this combination, I press control plus w, and what it does is to
delete all the text above the mark.

In addition, I don't know what yank and select means nor do I know what
it performs.

Finally, this is how I succeeded in placing a mark and selecting all the
text from that point to the current position of the voice over cursor.

First, go to the specific point in the text where you can place the
mark, and press control plus command plus backslash. (voice over does
not announce anything)

Second, go through the text  until the second point, and press control
plus x plus x. (voice over announces the selection and start reading the
selected text)

As a final comment, this only works for me in pages or textedit, but it
doesn't work in web pages; however,

something is something and I find it particularly useful, so I would
like to thank Anne for the feedback.

Best,
   Leo.

Well, I have to correct myself.
Anne was correct in that the keystroke in the DefaultKeyBinding.dict
file to place a mark is control-space.  I have just tried it and I can
confirm that it still works.

First, you need to create a folder in your Library folder called
KeyBindings if you don’t already have one.

Second, the key stroke to set a mark is actually control-@ as defined
in the dict file.  Note however that you can change it to whatever
you would prefer.

I also want to note that the keystroke vo-enter that Jonathan
mentioned is correct.  However it seems to be dead in the current
version of Mojave.  It is working in Catalina developer beta 6 however.

Hello Anne,

First of all, Thank you very much for your help, this seems to be
a wonderful solution; however, for some reason that I still
cannot understand, it didn't work for me. I followed your
instructions and pasted the resulting folder inside the library
folder of my user, but still, the keystrokes don't respond, and I
have even tried this in combination with the function key with no
luck. Besides, I've been doing some research on Google, but I
can't find anything that could lead me to respond why the
keystrokes are not responding.

I'm on Mojave latest update. Would anyone know why this happens?

Best,
Leo.

Hello Leo,

You can select text between two markers in any text document on
the Mac if you do the following:
Click on this link to download Keybindings.zip
>

In your Downloads folder, open the Keybindings.zip with Cmd-o.
Paste the resulting folder into your user library folder.
You should now be able to mark the start of your selection with
Ctrl-Space, navigate to the place you wish to end your selection
and press Ctrl-x-x. The text in between wil be selected.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi,

well if you red the question that started this thread, you'll
notice that basically your question and my question are the
same. Though I wanted to copy text from a web page, you want to
copy from a text editor; in addition, as far as we've been
told, there is no way to place two marks in a text and
automatically select the text between them. Since this is the
basic concept behind the function that we are looking for, this
probably cannot be done on Mac, neither on a text editor nor on
a web page.

Best,
Leo.

Hi Leo,
Thanks for the clarification.
What should I do if I need to select long passages after
placing a selection beginning mark. On the windows front, I
tend to keep reading until a spot where I need to end
selection. Is there a way to place sweet spots and make a text
selection between them? I will be grateful for an answer.
Take care,
Hem.
