face ID annoying me

2019-09-26 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi all,

So I received the iphone 11 pro max free upgrade with my telcom, the best is
also that my monthly bills have decreased. Overall happy with this.

However, face ID is really giving me a hard time, forcing me to input my
passcode each time.

I use sunglasses most of the time and used them while scanning my face. It
worked for a day, but now whether I got the glasses on or off, I get an 90
percent error rate.

I tried positioning in various angles, turned off "attention required" in
settings, which made it work slightly better but then got worse.

I'll re do the scanning process, but who in here has near 100% success rate can
give me some pointers?

Thanks, and have a great weekend y'all

Hi ET,
Nope, I haven’t exported anything or changed anything. Not sure why it decided
to F with my head this time and change the voices. But at least I fixed it
before going to work. Hope this doesn’t happen when the big update happens with
Catalina.

Re: Voice over voice

2019-09-26 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Thanks Dave,
I seemed to have gotten a handle on it now. I think the problem is that Apple
allows us to give a different voice to just about all of the aspects of Voice
over. That is a good thing, it’s just a matter of remembering what each thing
is called. I had to change the voice I use to read contents. One can give a
different voice to menus and all sorts of other stuff.
But I have fixed it for now.

Petrus,
I had trouble with that whole nested table, as well. Make sure you’re in the
row for default voice when you try to set up Karen. Then You need to move over
to where you can make additional settings, and there’s where you can assign
your other voices. All this I think should be within your default voice row.

BARD on my iPhone 11

2019-09-26 Thread John JD Denning
I just got my iPhone 11 today. My previous phone was a 10 are and I was running
13.1. My iPhone 11 first thing I did was update it to 13.1. Everything
installed fine no problem. Well here’s the problem.

I start playing a book on Bard, I lock the screen. And it plays to the end of
that chapter or section, like even the end of a front matter section. And then
it stops plane and bard quits. I unlock the phone open bard resume playing and
it does the same thing. If I keep the phone awake it plays fine. I do have it
set to allow background playing. I tried toggling that to see if it would make
a difference. It didn’t.

Anybody see anything like this? Anybody have an idea of a solution? I guess I
could delete barred and download it again.

Mac Updates

2019-09-26 Thread Jeff Berwick
Hi all,

I have just been prompted to update my Mac with a supplemental Mojave update.
I usually install these right away, but there is also a Safari update (13)
which I do not want to install as they have deprecated WebSQL and I need it for
testing and building apps—for the moment anyway.

So, does anybody know if I can safely install the MacOS update while not
updating Safari? If so, what is the process?

Thx,
Jeff

Re: A Text Message question

2019-09-26 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Yes and no. WiFi Calling is different than you might thin,. What it does is
allow you to connect to a WiFi network to boost the signal when the carrier
signal is weak. So, if you are only getting one or two bars of strength from
Rogers when you are somewhere in Canada, and you are also connected to a WiFi
network, then the radio in the iPhone will do some fancy footwork and,
essentially, boost the signal of Rogers through your WiFi connection to make
sure that you don't drop any call you might be on. WiFi Calling is not like
FaceTime or Google Duo that uses WiFi instead of phone carriers to make and
receive calls. So, keeping that all in mind, if you are in Oregon, with
Airplane mode enabled, and WiFi on, then as long as you're connected to a WiFi
network, you'll be able to send and receive iMessages, but other text messages
like those from an Android using friend will not be received, nor will you be
able to send anything to them. You need to be connected to an American carrier
while you're in the US in order to do that sort of thing. Of course, rates
when you're out of the country are high, so that might not be an option for
you. There are special roaming packages available through Rogers for using
your Canadian minutes and data, usually about $5 to $7 a day. Fairly expensive
if you're only getting a few texts or calls each day. Sometimes, in these
sorts of situations, I just turn off Data Roaming and eat the cost of call and
texts. It doesn't usually add up to the $20 or so that it would cost me for
the couple days across the border.

Just my 2¢ worth.

Later...

A.R. Pages is horrible for reading so when, for instance, I need to
read through a completed translation, I just copy the whole thing into
TextEdit and read it there. This also has the advantage of not reading
the changes when I have track changes turned on.
You can set a short cut for the service New TextEdit window containing
selection which means you just have to do Cmd-a and the said short cut.

Cheers,

Anne
