What I did was opened the VM Fusion keyboard preferences and just defined a
different key to be the caps lock key and then configured JAWS to use the
laptop layout. I used the key to the left of the number 1 as my capslock key.
I also defined ctrl+\ to be the menu key as this maps to then the same as the

If you make no other changes, the Windows key will map to the command key on

Logitech K380 Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard

2020-01-22 Thread J.Cyr
Good evening,
I was wondering if anyone is using this keyboard and if so what your
experiences using it have been?

I'm choosing a keyboard to sync with my IPhone and IMac and toggle between
them. I also want to be able to move it around the house with me and take it
with me when I travel to make using email on the IPhone a faster simpler
proposition. Any feedback on how this keyboard will work in these capacities
would be appreciated.

Thank you for the help,

Reposting: Here is a Very Good AirPrint Laser Printer that I am Now Recommending

2020-01-22 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

As I have received several off-list requests for the information regarding
the HP laser printer mentioned in a previous thread, I have decided to
repost the info here, in a new thread.

Mark

Original Post:
Subject: Here is a Very Good AirPrint Laser Printer that I am Now
Recommending

Hello All,

I purchased the HP LaserJet Pro M15w Wireless Laser Printer (W2G51A) from
Amazon and I absolutely love it.

It has all of the features I require including the ability to insert
standard mailing envelopes into the sheet feeder as a custom slot.

In order to use this printer, as an AirPrint, printer, you must download the
free HP Smart app, once. You use the app to configure the printer for use
on your network. This is to say, the app facilitates the ability to enter
your network password, etc. As I said, you only need to do this once as,
once done, all Apple devices can see the printer on the network and you may
print to your heart's content. The app is 100% VoiceOver accessible.

The printer is the tiniest laser printer I've ever seen. It uses a
mini-toner cartridge so it's perfect as a portable laser printer.

Oh, this is not a color laser.

Even when printing photos, it takes less than 10 seconds for the unit to
start printing. When printing documents, the unit begins printing almost
immediately. Of course, this is my experience, your milage may vary.

>From what I can tell, most of the negative reviews about the unit, on
Amazon, come from Windows users.

To be clear, you do not need to install any HP software on any of your Apple
devices in order to use the printer, save the HP Smart app, on one device,
to configure the unit. For you more advanced users, the printer has its own
web server so you can log directly into the unit via a web browser, should
you wish.

Although the unit ships with a USB cable, for use with Apple devices, it is
not necessary.

Now, in full disclosure, I have not used the printer with a Windows device.
>From what I can tell, the process of configuring the unit is more
complicated on Windows but I cannot speak to that.

The printer costs approximately $110.00 USD.

As for unpacking the unit, it would probably be best to have a sighted
person handy as un-taping the various parts could be challenging for an
inexperienced user. The only assembly is to unpack the toner cartridge and
preparing it for installation.

There are only 3 hardware buttons on the unit that are flush with the
surface but one can certainly put tape on them to mark their location.
Also, the unit makes a definite sound when plugged into the wall so there
can be no doubt as to when the unit is powered up.

Okay, here is the URL for the printer on Amazon.

Mark

Re: Can't Access My Network Drive From Windows On VMWare Fusion

2020-01-22 Thread 'Sabahattin Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hi Pete,

Yes, I did find it, but for some strange reason not in the same thread. I’ve
been a bit late to certain email lists and I think I’ve ended up replying to
threads that have long since been dealt with; yours must have been one of those.

I’m glad it works through your local NAT connection with the IP address method,
certainly that is a legitimate way to do it. However what I meant by discovery
was appearance in the usual network browser in Explorer, which would let you
specify the credentials to log in as as well if they were incorrect. I’m glad,
though, that you have it worked out. Of course don’t forget, there’s always
local sharing with VMWare tools, which works through a special virtual bus
protocol. It’s not always the best option, but it’s very convenient.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Re: recursive appointments

2020-01-22 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I don't believe that you can be that granular in your appointment creation.
There are facilities within the Calendar app on the Mac whereby you can do the
first part of your request. That is, you can create an event, that is every
second year, in specific months such as Jan, Feb and Sep, on the third Monday.
The limitation arises with respect to multiple days, and/or skipping weeks. My
guess is that you would need to create multiple events for the different days.
I don't believe that Google would be any better. Maybe an Exchange calendar
could do it, but I'm sceptical. To see all the possibilities within your Mac's
Calendar app, choose "custom" under the "Repeat" pop-up menu when creating
events.

HTH.

so, for each unit: year, month, week and day, I would like to say between how

I don’t know if this is possible or not and if so, which

Re: How do I share an EPUB file in books with someone?

2020-01-22 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Sabahattin,

Using the "select All" does seem to cause problems. I'm not sure if it's
because of one specific book, or if it has something to do with some other
restrictions. If I download 20 books, all goes fine. I haven't tried pushing
further than that yet. You're welcome to try. It's entirely possible that one
of the books has some sort of protection that is affecting the use of the
"Select All" and drag action, but I don't feel like going through my entire
bookshelf to figure that out. Here's what I do. For the sake of semantics,
the older on my Desktop is named "Books".:

• In the Books app, download the book titles to your local drive. Do not use
Select All here either. Make sure that the Book Shelf is in List mode, then
sort by the 8th column, which is the Download column.
• When sorted in this fashion, you can quickly select 20 to 30 titles at a time
to download. Just select them with shift, then VO-shift-m and choose Download.
• After all are downloaded. make sure both the Books app and the Finder folder
are in List mode.
• I've found it easier to now leave the Books folder open on the Desktop.
• In the Books app, interact with the Book Shelf
• Select about 10 to 20 titles using shift-down arrow.
• Press VO-cmd-f5 to route the mouse to the VO cursor.
• Press VO-cmd-shift-space to invoke mouse-down.
• Press VO-f1-f1 to bring up the Application Chooser, and navigate to the
Finder, then right and down to the Books window.
• Navigate to the List View table but do not interact with it.
• Press VO-cmd-f5 to route the mouse to the VO cursor.
• Press VO-cmd-shift-space to invoke the mouse-up action.

This should do it. If you choose too many, then you will end up with the Books
app going busy and not actually dragging and dropping the titles. As you
mentioned, it does eventually stop being busy, but the titles don't ever get
copied over. I did copy 20 at a time and it worked fine. If there is an
offending title in the midst, it will likely hang even when trying that
specific group of 20. You'll at least have narrowed things down though.

Let me know if you have any success.

Later...

Re: Can't Access My Network Drive From Windows On VMWare Fusion

2020-01-22 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi Sabahattin,

You probably didn’t see an earlier reply I sent, but I did get my VM to see my
network drive, and my Network adapter is configured to share with my Mac! It
turned out that the reason I could not see my NAS drive was because I had
logged into Windows using my Microsoft account. When I switched users and
logged in with my local windows account, everything came up just fine.

Thanks for your e-mail!

Re: How do I share an EPUB file in books with someone?

2020-01-22 Thread 'Sabahattin Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hi Tim,

Well, I tried and tried, but tragically I just can’t make it work in list view.
I really hope there’s something obvious I’m missing here.

What part of the table row should I click and hold down on? Is the Finder for
you in any particular mode? Anything else in particular I’m not getting? It is
working fine, a book at a time, in the other views.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Re: Can't Access My Network Drive From Windows On VMWare Fusion

2020-01-22 Thread 'Sabahattin Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hi Pete,

Your Windows VM won’t discover your NAS while sharing a connection with your
Mac. You should put the network adaptor inside the VM (go to the settings) into
bridge mode with the network adaptor that your Mac is using to connect to your
network. Once you’ve done that, your Windows VM will behave like any other
physical Windows box on your network.

Cheers,

Re: Itunes match or not?

2020-01-22 Thread 'Sabahattin Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
There’s one other reason you’d want iTunes Match instead of or in addition to
Apple Music that I’ve not yet seen mentioned: DRM. If you use Apple Music
exclusively, you always get DRM, whether or not you uploaded your content. This
is problematic if you routinely rely on syncing to other devices or playing in
other players or libraries over the network. I no longer use Apple Music, but I
think Match is good enough for that reason alone. You get the same content
matching, but no DRM, and the convenience of being able to have an infinite
library on any device, wherever it is. Of course, if your library can fit onto
your device, the case for Match disappears, as is currently my case. Also
notable: Match upgrades your content to 256 Kbps AAC; it also *downgrades*
lossless quality to that format. You should not rely on Match or Music as a
backup, just as a convenience. Finally, don’t forget Home Sharing, the feature
that’ll let you stream content from your Mac or PC to your iOS devices and
other Macs, including your music library at any quality. Unfortunately, it only
allows streaming to iOS; you can’t download to your device this way. You still
need Match if you want that—an absurd limitation, but there it is. The only way
to get music onto your iOS device without Match or an Apple Music subscription
remains iTunes syncing, with USB or over Wi-Fi.

Re: More on applewatch.

2020-01-22 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

During setup, yes, you need Bluetooth turned on. After setup, it is
recommended that you have both Bluetooth and WiFi enabled on your iPhone so
that all features can be enjoyed. Apple Watch uses Bluetooth primarily to
conserve battery life and will switch to WiFi when your iPhone is out of range.

More on applewatch.

2020-01-22 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
Do i have to have bluetooth on on my Iphone when i use the Apple Watch.
It seems that the watch app has problems finding the watch when i don’t have
bluetooth or wifi on.
BUt this may be due to that the watch isn’t updated yet to the latest version.
Will do that when charging for tonight.

Re: Airpods

2020-01-22 Thread David Chittenden
I was recently looking at NZ mobile providers. Two Degrees now offers a
purchase plan where they split the cost of the new phone across the life of
the contract, and if one adds $10 per month, one can upgrade the phone
after 12 months by exchanging the current handset for the new model.
Here in Australia, Telstra does this, and they even divide the cost of
accessories, such as AirPods, in to the same payment plan across the life
of the contract. I go for the two year contract so I can upgrade my phone
every 12 months.

Here in NZ your lucky if you get any apple product reduced in price.

RE: .dss files.

2020-01-22 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi,

Dss files are digital speech standard files,

They can be played on both windows and mac computers,

They require an Olympus digital recorder / player software to play them.

Seemingly a compressed format that keeps the quality of the audio in the file.

Hope this helps.

RE: help with apple watch issue

2020-01-22 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Donna,

That in this case doesn’t work,

I’m normally burning 3500 KJ per day,

And it’s only started showing in the passed couple of weeks,
Infact probably since this passed weekend I’ve noticed it,

Week before last I know for a fact it was working fine.

I’m beting my levels most days except now with the minutes.

I walked 1.5 KM home from work tonight in around 24 minutes and still the
minutes don’t go up.

It’s really weird.

2 weeks ago I did a 2 hour walk around part of the city I was in and that was
at a good pace even though I didn’t know the environment very well,

Yet still the measurements were up well over my set levels.

I have also noticed this on my elliptical machine, and have the same theory. I
think you have to either be burning a certain number of calories or show a
certain amount of movement, or it doesn't count toward your minutes.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Simon,

I have noticed this same thing where the exercise minutes don't match the time
you've actually been exercising. It happens mainly with the outdoor walk as you
found. My theory on this is that if you don't walk fast enough to get your
heart rate up to a certain level the watch doesn't record that as exercise
minutes regardless of you activating the workout.

I hope this helps.

Morning all,

I have a question re workouts on an apple watch Series 4,

I use my apple watch workout daily,
The main work out is the outdoor walk

What I’m finding is that what I see in the activity report which is kilojoules
 (movement), exercise (minutes moving),
And standing,

I’ve noticed over the passed few months that the exercise or movement time
recording doesn’t meet with what the outdoor walk in this case workout report.

Tonight I walked for 35 minutes on the workout,
After walking 25 minutes to work this morning and again on my walk home so
approx. 1.5 hours of walking,

Yet my exercise activity app on the watch records only 16 minutes,

I want to know if anyone else has noticed such a thing and if so what they did?

Note this is an apple watch sport series 4,
Running Watch OS 6.1.1

And sincs to my iphone 11 pro max running the latest Ios version.
Not that it should matter but all are space grey.

Cheers for any information people might be able to assist with.

Cheers,

Simon F
