Re: Home security cameras?

2020-05-03 Thread Brad Snyder
Ring has all kinds of security cameras, not just doorbells.
It works with an iOS app and maybe Home kit too.

Re: Silencing VoiceOver with the control key

2020-05-03 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Hi Eric,
I have the advantage of having access to two machines and have only noticed
this on my one. I might see if I can get hold of Apple accessibility and see if
I can give them remote access to my machine so they can see what is going on.
. shame that we haven[’t got Apple stores in New Zealand or I would have gone
into store to show them what is happening.. And the retail store I got my Mac
from wouldn’t understand VoiceOver anyway.

Re: Silencing VoiceOver with the control key

2020-05-03 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Petrus,

Yes, I brought this up earlier.

For me it works sometimes. If not working what happens is I press it
and Voice over just keeps talking. I have to restart Voice over and then the
Control key will work correctly. Unfortunately it doesn’t last all that long
and I’m back to turning voice over off and on again.

It is nice when it works.

Best of luck.

Re: Silencing VoiceOver with the control key

2020-05-03 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
I just tested it again, I can report that I am most definitely pressing it
once. I’ve always had problems with the control key on this machine, first
thing in the morning once I’ve opened my lid and start using the computer it
takes about three or four presses of the control key before it silences
VoiceOver. Almost like it needs to warm up. But when I test it on my wife’s
MacBook it behaves as it should every time. It’s just the control key on my
machine that refuses to play nicely.

Re: Learning Terminal

2020-05-03 Thread 'Devin Prater' via MacVisionaries
Thanks so much for this info, Janina. I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this
or not, but when you get into commands that do more than simple, one line
responses, you’ll probably find that VoiceOver… Just doesn’t do so well in the
Terminal. Then, you may want to check out TDSR, the terminal screen reader.

https://github.com/tspivey/tdsr

If you become interested in other Linux accessibility stuff as well, you could
look into Emacs, and Emacspeak. I’ve done a guide on getting those set up:

https://gist.github.com/a794a448ccc46e72fca63c932105c043

Homebrew, from:

https://brew.sh

Will give you access to many more packages (programs) for the Terminal, and you
can use the “brew cask” commands to install even Mac apps, like Google Chrome
or Github Desktop, if you ever get into that.

I know, a lot of these are resources that you may use when you’re more
comfortable with the basics, but I figured I’d give them out now, so you have a
path to follow when you’re done getting started.

Journey before Destination! :)

Re: About Oracle virtualBox

2020-05-03 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Interesting you should ask. I'm currently trying to setup Windows 10 on
my new Mac Mini using VirtualBox.

I've been surprised that the initial VB setup appears quite accessible
with Voice Over. I think this is fairly new. In chicking my status via
the VB CLI, I do seem to have my machine correctly configured.

Where I'm currently stumped is in identifying the Windows 10 ISO image
VB should use to start the installation process. I can't get the file
browser navigation down. On the CLI, it seems I need to first configure
a virtual device before i can specify the iso file as an argument.

I've been stuck at this point for about a week, but I also haven't
worked on it in the last week.

Re: Learning Terminal

2020-05-03 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
I don't know about the particular podcast or the book that was suggested
by others. I'd suggest checking out those resources, though. Any
starting point should help.

I do have some more generic advice that will serve you forever, because
you'll never learn everything there is to know about the Terminal. No
one does.

So, the question quickly becomes: "How do I do X?"

For that on line searches are very useful. I frequently open a Google
search and put in +osx to get Apple specific results for the remainder
of my querry.

If I get too many point and click results, I go back to my search and
add +cli to my querry. I rarely need go any further for finding Terminal
oriented help on whatever the particular task.

I should also note that Terminal now defaults to the Z Shell. Therefore,
any resource you can find about zsh is likely to be helpful, even if
it's about zsh on Linux. Now, there's a lot of colorization available in
zsh commands. Just skip all that stuff irrelevant to you.

Lastly, you should know about the man command. This is shorhand for
manual. An example of how to use this command might be having the
Terminal tell you all the ways you can use the cp command:

man cp

You will never outgrow your need for the man command.

Writing all this reminds me of one of my favorite life experiences, when
first I learned to use Unix command lines. Those where the early days of
on line shell access that we accessed vial dialup modem. I was familiar
with menu driven systems like Compuserve and Delphi, but Netcom, when I
logged in prompted only:

[netcom]$

This I knew from nothing what to do. Where was my menu?

So, I called Netcom. just by chance I got Bob Reager the founder on the
phone--yes, those were different days.

So, I started my conversation with Bob, "What do I do?"

Bob said: "We sent you a manual."

I said: "I'm blind, can't read it."

Bob said: "Oh wow! Do you know the man command and maybe the rn
command?"

I said: "No, never heard of them?"

Bob said: "OK, just type man man and maybe also man man -k. Then you can
also just type rn and press enter."

I said: "cool, if I get stuck, may I call you for more direction?"

Bob said: "Yes, as long as you don't abuse it, you may call me."

Guess what? I never called him again.

rn is dead. It was a usenet news reader, and usenet has died. Instead we
have this and similar email list groups (not so available 30 years ago).

But, I love that those two commands took me everywhere from that point.
And, yes, I still use man all the time.

Good luck!

Best,

Janina

Home security cameras?

2020-05-03 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

I know this has come up before, but I don't remember what the consensus was.

My husband and I want to install a security camera. Obviously one choice would
be to go with Ring. My husband also found one called Eufy, which claims to work
with home kit. Questions:
1. Anyone using Ring? Are you happy with it? Does it play nice with Homekit? Is
the app accessible?
2. Anyone using Eufy? Same questions as in no. 1
3. Any other options that any of you would recommend?
TIA,
Donna

Why don't you just use Preview? It's accessible and it works a lot better on a

Good day,
It is the host providers job to secure the site, as the client requests. As a
host provided myself, I tell my clients that they are free to run e-commerce

Most clients usually purchase an SSL certificate to secure their websites, and
there are free alternatives for SSL certificates.
I did email you off list by the way, I’m not sure if you got it or not. If not,

Well, i have tried it but its not easy to set up if you don’t use the terminal.
So if you can use command line and know that very well you can set a windows

Re: ITunes / Music library growing beyond my mac's capacity; suggestions what to do?

2020-05-03 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
Bying an Internal drive for your mac will make you poor dude.
I asked about that on a certificated apple repair and they said to me they have
to use the apple branded ssd.
And they will cost like 1200 $ maybe.
But if you’re willing to do it your self i guess you can buy what you want.
Then you could install it on your mac but i wont do that as it might break
something.
An external network drive might be what you want.

RE: About Oracle virtualBox

2020-05-03 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Yes it is a good cheap option.

Once up and running it is fine for accessibility if you're using voiceover on
the host.

The problem I struck however was the setup process where accessibility of the
setup features is what's commonly known as absolute crap.

Note though that this was last worked on by me about 18 months ago so things
may have changed for it.

Otherwise once up and working the windows system is very usable.

Hi Simon,

Yeah, we get minor floods about every 20 years or so here, but this one was a
doozy. There was a 28 km long ice jam that caused the big river to send its
water and ice against the flow of the smaller rivers. That much volume of
water spilled over the banks and berms around rather easily and made a mess of
a lot of the lower town-site. Over 1000 structures, both residential and
businesses, have been affected. People are just going back now in some of the
areas to determine the extent of the damage. Compound this with all the COVID
stuff, and there's a number of people shaking their heads at the luck of it
all. One of our golf courses was just getting ready to open as some COVID
restrictions are being relaxed a very little, but with 3 m tall chunks of ice
and all the silt from the floodwater on the course, it will be a while before
they get to re-open.

Oh well, this is off topic to our list, so I sign off now.

Stay safe all.

Hi,

Good idea. We don't even have local transmitters anymore. Too far out in the
boonies and away from it all. Had some major flooding this week up here, so
about 13,000 people had to be evacuated from their homes. Rough for many as we
had a wild fire here four years ago and some of the same who lost their home to
the fires again lost their home to the floods. We're good as we're on much
higher ground and the water didn't make it up this far. Things are receding
now, the water level has gone down about 7.1 metres so far (around 24 ft in
your lingo). It's amazing how powerful nature is.

Hi,
You don't actually need Apple TV Plus to configure this feature. You can use
what Apple calls, Apple TV Channels to do this. All you really need to do is
search for a title, like Star Trek. If it is available on CBS All Access in
the US, then there should be a "Where to Watch" item in your search results.
Open that and CBS All Access, will be an option. When you select that option,
if you're already subscribed, it will just start playing. If you're not yet
subscribed, then it will tell you how you can.
