Re: Face time on the Mac is broken or not?

2020-05-21 Thread Marie Lyons
I am unable to make a FaceTime call unless I ask Siri to do it. When I try to
use the button nothing happens. Also, I had the screen go green when on a
video call. Does anyone know what that means?

Music shortcut and repeating

2020-05-21 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Hi all,
I have a Siri shortcut set up on my iPhone so I can play a particular track
from my music collection every morning. I used to say Hey Siri play such and
such or invoke Siri with the home b button to play the track. It was easier
then trying to find it in my music collection in the mornings when I am half
asleep, and I couldn’t get Siri to play it by asking for it as it is an Hindi
song and Siri had to much trouble understanding me so a shortcut was the best
solution. However now when I invoke the shortcut it will play the track and
then repeat it again. This has only happened in the last week or so. I can’t
remember changing anything in my settings but I might have done.
I thought about using the song as an alarm but it is 20 minutes long and the
alarm stops after 10 minutes.

I’ll look for it. I did find one in the App Store called audio book builder 2

Re: Chat function using Voice over in Zoom

2020-05-21 Thread Julie Rattray
Yes that would be fab - I did that with a friend on teams - not that I am an
expert but had more knowledge than her so we played about and it was fun to do
that so yes lets try

We could then maybe see if we could compile some suggestions for the zoom
people to incorporate that might be helpful.

One thing I will say is that unlike teams I do find both the iPad and desktop
version easy to work with whereas with Teams the iPad version is fine - almost
but the desktop version drives me bananas

Hi,

Typos are never your fault, it’s those silly gremlins that invade our
computers. I believe that the app is found on the web. It was quite a while
ago that I got it, but a Google search hopefully would still find it for you.

Re: Chat function using Voice over in Zoom

2020-05-21 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I agree. I find it most distracting in the iPad app for Zoom. I haven’t found
the option on the Mac version yet, but in the iPad version, you can mute the
chat announcements. If you wish, and have time, we can set up a Zoom meeting
and practice on some of the features so that we can pretend we’re smarter
during the meetings we host or participate in.

Lots of this is pretty easy for the sighted user, but takes a bit more work for
us.

Re: Chat function using Voice over in Zoom

2020-05-21 Thread Julie Rattray
Thanks Tim,

This does of course mean that you need to keep checking - it would be great if
you could get some kind of audible notification if you were the meeting
organiser that a hand was up - maybe this will come in the future. I am having
to teach now using either teams or zoom and am looking at different was of
facilitating teaching. I might have students take it in turn to monitor hand
raising as a way of drawing them in but it would be good if we could get a ping
to show a hand was up.

Hi Petrus,

I use AudioBook builder. It is totally accessible. There are others out
there, that’s just the one that I chose to use.

lots of MP3 audio books on my external hard drive that I’d like to convert and
import into my books app. Instructions off list on how to use it would be nice

Hi Julie,

If you can navigate to the Participants list, when you move through the list,
it should announce if a hand is up. If you are the host, then you can even put
their hand back down.

Hi,

Normally, that’s exactly what you need to do. I had this happen to me today
part way through a Zoom meeting though, and couldn’t figure out how to fix it.
I didn’t want to leave the meeting since I was the host, but will see if it
happens again and fiddle with it to learn a workaround.

Re: Chat function using Voice over in Zoom

2020-05-21 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
I am not sure. There was an edit field and I typed. Then I VO right arrow and
the table was empty. There were no labels on it so I hoped I was in the
correct field. I’d love to know how you’d identify how you’d know that a hand
was raised. So how would you know if someone had unmuted you? I’d also like
to know how you schedule a meeting and find how to let someone in to the Zoom
room.

I get my EL Braille tomorrow so as to make sure if I have job interviews that I
can show someone that I can use a computer even if it’s not a Mac. So to be on
topic it will be interesting to see how Zoom is different on windows as I have
only used Zoom on the Mac and it’s far better than Skype.

Hmm this is strange I think normally you just hit return and it sends - maybe
someone else can help - the only thing is there is an option to choose who it
goes to and I wonder if you hit this it brings up a search field and that is
where you typed?

I am not hugely experienced with zoom just learning myself

For example does anyone know if there is a way to work out when someone in a
zoom raises their hand - I can raise my own hand but how would I identify if
others had?

Chat function using Voice over in Zoom

2020-05-21 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hi All.

I was part of a zoom meeting earlier on and I found I could not send a chat to
the group. When I typed my question in the chat edit field, I thought I’d
press enter and the message would send. So when I did go back in to the edit
field with vo left arrow, the chat was still there and it didn’t send to the
group. So if someone could write me the key strokes to send chat using voice
over, I’d be grateful. At least I can mute and unmute myself in a meeting
which is a marked improvement.

Thanks for your help.

Re: question about navigating in safari

2020-05-21 Thread Brad Snyder
Assuming you are using VoiceOver, you can use VO + CMD + L to navigate by links.
VO + CMD + H will navigate by headings.
Add the SHIFT key to either to navigate in reverse direction.

Convirtió MP3 files

2020-05-21 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Hi all,
I know this subject has come up on this list before and not so long ago. But I
Wasn’t really paying attention. I know there is an App for converting MP3
files in to the format that the Books App uses on the Mac and iPhone. I’ve got
lots of MP3 audio books on my external hard drive that I’d like to convert and
import into my books app. Instructions off list on how to use it would be nice
as well if one has the time.
Thanks in advance,
Petrus

Face time on the Mac is broken or not?

2020-05-21 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hello.

I tried making a face time call on the Mac but when I typed the person’s name
etc in the edit box, you could here what you wanted but when you vo right to
the table, there was nothing in the table. Are others having this result?

Also if you open contacts and you find contact details for the person, you
interact and find the details, if you vo M normally you get choices of what
you’d like to do. There is a face time button but no label to make a face time
audio call or face time video call. All you have is a call button or send
message button. So if someone could tell me if they get the same thing using
voice over then I can write to Apple Accessibility.

Thank you for your help.

Kawal.

Hi Tim,
I found it under settings, privacy, and bluetooth as well. We have a covid
tracing app in New Zealand that was released yesterday but it hasn’t got
bluetooth capability yet. We have been told that it is coming in future

So, I went to the app store and downloaded the Apple COVID-19 app. I
installed it, and answered the questions, but I'm still getting the

know what I need to do to utilize this feature? This is really a big miss

One of the features that Apple and Google proposed was to only allow health
workers to mark somebody as being exposed to the disease. This way, one can't
freak out everybody that went to the Fraternity party with you last week.

Yeah, I agree. There should have been better information up front, and the
whole effort should have been coordinated by Apple and Google. That way
individuals in a given state could opt in, whether or not their state does.

This is just an API that Apple and Google have built. In order to use it, you
need an app. To the best of my knowledge, only three states have said they are
participating in this program at this time, many have not said, and some have
said no. It will be up to the health authority of each state to build their own
app. Google and Apple should have built the app in my view. This is going to be
slow, incomplete, and probably not very well done, e.g. look at what’s
happening in the united kingdom where their app has been delayed. The three
states that have said yes our Alabama, North Dakota, and I believe North
Carolina. States that I’ve said no include Maryland, Pennsylvania, California,
Texas, and others.

inside this setting there is a Learn More button. It seems that there are
certain apps that you can allow access of the COVID-19 tracking system
too. It’s not available in my region, so I’m not totally familiar with the
 details of how it works.

2020-05-21 Thread 'Maria Reyes' via MacVisionaries
my understanding is that it works through bluetooth. so I'm guessing you would
have to log if you have COVID-19 into an app and your phone will notify you if
you have been exposed. there aren't any apps yet.

Recording in Quick Time Player

2020-05-21 Thread Nebojsa Tasic

Hi All!

When I record in Quick Time player without headset Voice Over and all
other inner sounds are recorded. But when I turn the headset on, only my
voice is recorded. How to set Quick Time Player to record all sounds
from the computer?

There is only microphone in input devices section in System preferences.

Thanks in advance.

Nice article, Tim. Thanks for sharing.

I guess I'm with you. I hope more information is forthcoming. the fact that
this is a shared effort between Apple and Google is, to my thinking, part of
what makes it cool, and gives it such potential. It would be a shame for that
potential to be wasted, either because the supporting apps don't exist, or
because users aren't given information about what apps they need to install.

Hi,

My understanding is that various health or government agencies who have
developed apps for tracking would request this data. It kind of depends on
your local/regional government. I agree in that it is not well explained.
Take note though, that this is not only an Apple initiative. It’s developed by
both Apple and Google for implementation on both platforms. I’m hoping that
someone like Mac Rumours or some other Internet big-wig puts out a better
explanation of the process to the masses.

In further reading, many of the apps that will work with this technology have
yet to be developed or released. Here’s a bit of an explanation from a

I just installed IOS 13.5 so I could use the COVID-19 tracking feature. Problem
is, when I go into settings and enable COVID tracking, it tells me that it
can't be enabled because I don't have a necessary app installed. So, I went to
the app store and downloaded the Apple COVID-19 app. I installed it, and
answered the questions, but I'm still getting the message that COVID tracking
in settings cannot be enabled. Does anyone know what I need to do to utilize
this feature? This is really a big miss by Apple. If they expect people to use
this, they needed to let us know what we need to do.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Zoom on the mac?

2020-05-21 Thread Brad Snyder
I use Zoom on my Macs on pretty much a daily basis. It is extremely accessible
and I find it much easier to use on the Mac than on my Windows machine.
Zoom is not available from the Mac AppStore, but you can get it for free from
the following link:

https://zoom.us/download

There is also an iOS app that is available from the iOS AppStore. It is also
very accessible and easy to use, though not as full featured as the Mac version.

Re: Zoom on the mac?

2020-05-21 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Andrew,

I use Zoom on the Mac all the time, both professionally and personally. The
folks at Zoom have done a great job with accessibility. There are keyboard
commands for most features, but there is also a good menu system that you can
use if you forget the keyboard shortcuts. Just Google download Zoom, and you
should have no problem finding it.
Cheers,
Donna

RE: Burning CDs and cats

2020-05-21 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Did you ask the cat what she did?

From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com On
Behalf Of Petrus Tuerlings
Sent: Thursday, 21 May 2020 11:19 AM

Subject: Burning CDs and cats

Hi all,
Excuse the rather odd subject of this email, but all will be explained.
I was burning a MP3 audio book collection on to a writable DVD for my work
colleague and walked away for a moment. I had a nice little progress indicator
up on the screen telling me the progress. I’m not sure what this looks like
visually but one of my cats thought it looked pretty cool and let on to my
keyboard while I was away. I heard voice over saying something while I was at
the other end of the house so came back to check as the burn was only about
half way through. The cat jumped off the keyboard as I came back in to the room
but she managed to get rid of the progress indicator, lucky she didn’t stop the
burning process. I had no idea how to bring the progress indicator back up on
the screen? How does one do this? I know I could have asked this question
without the cat detail, but I thought it was pretty funny. Especially the
little blurb noise she made as she ran away knowing she did something wrong. I
wasn’t sure if I could put the. Lid down on the MacBook while burning a CD? Or
I would have done it as the cat does enjoy the flashing lights and colours on
the screen.
Thanks,
Petrus
