ports on the new iMac

2021-06-18 Thread Marie Lyons
Recently I came across an article about Apple slimming down the Mac but losing
ports in the process. When I went back later to read the article I couldn’t
find it. Does anyone know anything about this?

Re: Apple Music or other provider

2021-06-18 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
I will of course start with the same caveat that others have offered - that
this is a very subjective decision. But I agree with Anders and Mary. I like
Apple Music a lot. It is very accessible as Anders says. I also like how it
interfaces with my Music library. For example, if I tell Siri to play an album
from my library, that album will play, and then Apple Music will keep playing
music that is similar to that album until I tell it to stop. I’ve discovered
quite a bit of new music that way.

I have Apple Music, free Pandora, and free Spotify. Of the three, my favorite
is Apple Music. If you use Siri a lot to play music, I think Apple Music is
the easiest. Pandora works pretty well, and, though I haven’t tried it, I
think there’ve been improvements in how Spotify works with Siri. But I find
Apple Music to be most seamless.

Cheers,
Donna

 Hi,

The Apple TV has to be the device sending the music to the receiver. If
you AirPlay from your iPhone to the Apple TV, then it is the iPhone that
is in control, and thus you are essentially using AirPlay to deal with the
music, and AirPlay which then limits the bandwidth. The Apple TV 4K is
perfectly accessible and supports Siri, thus you can ask music to be
played via the Siri remote for the Apple TV. As long as the receiver has
HDMI input, you’re good to go. There’s no need to connect a TV for the
video when playing music. There are ways of using your iPhone as a remote
for the Apple TV, but it’s not really that necessary with the Siri remote.

I would say that all AV modern receivers would have HDMI inputs and
outputs, but if it’s not an AV receiver that you’re interested in, then
 you’ll need to confirm.

2021-06-18 Thread Ronald van Rhijn
Hi,

Yeah, I think you should wait to upgrade your Mac. If you are planning to buy
an Apple Silicon based M1 Mac that is, because there will probably be a more
powerful version coming in the next couple of monts with the name M1X or M2.
I am not totally sure if I want an Apple Silicon based Mac myself, but when I
do I want the more powerful next version of the M1. The current M1 is used in
all M1 Mac’s to this date, and are low to mid end machines.

Re: Apple Music or other provider

2021-06-18 Thread Mary Otten
As somebody else already said, that decision is up to you, based on your usage
and whether you’re happy with the service. You can save some money if you get a
yearly subscription. I believe the cost for that is $100, or $99.99. That means
that you would be saving about $20 over the monthly price. I like Apple Music.
Others like Spotify. If you have AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, he would be able
to take advantage of spatial audio, which I think is kind of cool.

There’s upgrades every Fall for the MacOS as well as iPadOS and iOS. There’s

Re: Xcode accessibility and best MacBook for coding?

2021-06-18 Thread Tibor Niesner
Hello,

Xcode is verry accessible with VoiceOver.
There is a simulator for application, which is not accessible with VO.
You can connect your devices (iPhone, iPad), where you can give your app from
Xcode. The app on iPhone or iPad is verry accessible, you can normally work
with app on the IOS/iPad OS devices.
So if you have any IOS devices so I recommend work with app on the physical on
the IOS devices.

Best regard.

Re: trying to clean install catalina on 2012 mac book pro please help.

2021-06-18 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Trahern,

Since you are already running Catalina, the easiest way to do the fresh install
would be to do it from the Recovery partition.

• shutdown your computer.
• start your computer while holding down the cmd and r keys together. Keep
them down for about seven or eight seconds after the startup chime. If you do
not have a chime on your computer, hold them down for about 10 seconds.
• wait for a minute or more as the Recovery starts up, then press cmd-f5 to
turn on VO.
• select Disk Utility from the MacOS Utilities window, then Continue.
• interact with the table of disks, and select the Macintosh HD.
• stop interacting with the table, VO-left to the Toolbar and interact with it.
• VO-space on the Erase button.
• make sure that the name remains as Macintosh HD, format is APFS.
• VO-space on the “Erase Volume Group” button. This will erase both the
Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD Data volumes creating just one for the clean
install. Pressing the Erase instead of the Erase Volume Group will not be a
true clean install.
• follow any prompts.
• once it has finished, VO-space on the Done button.
• press cmd-q to Quit Disk Utility.
• select Reinstall MacOS from the table and press Continue.
• follow the prompts agreeing to all things you need to agree with, choose the
Macintosh HD and install the MacOS.

Note that in this scenario, you do not need to download any installation app as
a brand new copy is automatically downloaded from Apple and installed. Because
you are already running Catalina, and because you used the cmd+r key
combination when entering Recovery, you will get the newest version of that
same MacOS. After it’s done its installation thing and restarted itself, you
will be presented with the Language Chooser and the normal setup screens after
a brand new clean installation.

Good luck.

Re: Xcode accessibility and best MacBook for coding?

2021-06-18 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Xcode on Mac is perfectly accessible. The problem will arise when using the
simulator to test your code. That, being that it is a graphic representation
of an iPad or iPhone, is not accessible. You can though directly install your
coded app directly onto your iPad or iPhone and determine things from there.
Of course, this is not necessarily the most secure way of testing things as you
could be putting an app onto your device that is flawed. In most cases though,
the coding you’d be doing in a introductory course should not hurt anything on
your device.

Re: Apple Music or other provider

2021-06-18 Thread Brad Snyder
I think that is a question that only you can answer for yourself.
Once your trial subscription ends in July, you will be charged $9.99 USD per
month, if you decide to keep the service.
If you feel the Apple Music service is worth $9.99 each month, then you should
keep it. If you do not feel the service is worth $9.99, then you should end
your subscription at least 1 day before the end of your trial, and you will not
be charged.

Hi Ronald,

You’re most welcome. Yes, modifying the decoder within the AirPlay or AirPlay

the Apple Music app available to be installed on sound systems in the way that
they made Apple TV installable on some smart TV’s. This would make things
extremely easy in my opinion. I know that Spotify is available on my AV
receiver, so if Apple Music was available as well, then the whole Apple TV
connection may not be needed.

Regarding the Chrome Cast vs AirPlay question, there’s advantages and
disadvantages to both devices. Of course, it likely depends on your use case,
your adoption of one eco-system vs the other, and other factors. Here’s an
article where one person gives there opinion on the benefits and drawbacks of
each.

Both AirPlay and AirPlay 2 can actually handle lossless, but for some
reason, the AirPlay signal is converted/compressed thus it will not be
lossless by the time it reaches your receiver.

Hi Ronald,

You’re most welcome. Yes, modifying the decoder within the AirPlay or AirPlay
2 protocol would be a great solution. It would be interesting if Apple made
the Apple Music app available to be installed on sound systems in the way that
they made Apple TV installable on some smart TV’s. This would make things
extremely easy in my opinion. I know that Spotify is available on my AV
receiver, so if Apple Music was available as well, then the whole Apple TV
connection may not be needed.

The best way to get lossless audio as well as Dolby Atmos is to use an
Apple TV 4K connected via HDMI to the receiver. If your system supports
it, lossless and Dolby Atmos will be passed through to the receiver from
the Apple TV 4K using this setup.

Re: My plan to upgrade MacBook Pro

2021-06-18 Thread Ronald van Rhijn
Hi,

No, you cannot use a M1 Mac with Bootcamp. The only solution at the moment is
a virtual machine from Parallels running the ARM-based version of Windows.
I also use Pro Tools, but dont’ think Pro Tools is supported nativily on M1
Mac’s yet. It will probably run through Rosetta 2 though. Don’t know how well
that works.
If you are using a 512gb hdd for Mac OS only and put all sound libraries on
external ones, it could be enough for audio work. On the other hand, you
mention internal hdd upgrades at Apple are expensive, have you seen prices of
Thunderbolt external drives? These are not cheap also.

 Hi,

How much RAM in this MacBook Pro? Using ProTools are best ran with at
least 8 Gb RAM, but I’d recommend 16 Gb for best results. With respect to
BootCamp and Windows, the answer is definitely yes. Drive space is a
consideration when installing Windows, so if you have at least a 256 Gb
drive, preferably SSD or flash storage, then you should be good to go.

Xcode accessibility and best MacBook for coding?

2021-06-18 Thread Sadam Ahmed
Hi everyone,
I’m thinking of doing a short course on Swift at my University.
How accessible is Xcode on the Mac when it comes to building an app for iPhone?
Also, I’ll be using a MBA with 8 GB of RAM and 512GB SSD.
Do you think the above is OK for development?
Kind wishes if you can help.
Respectfully,
Sadam Ahmed
