Trying to restore a MacBook Pro

2021-10-30 Thread Dave Carlson
Had a major crash on my MacBook Pro. It would not start up after trying to
switch from one operating system to another. Only the Apple came up, and then
an apple with a line through it and then it would shut off again. I found out
that I need to hold down option plus command plus are during the start up. I
did that, and after my wife helped with selecting a Wi-Fi network and the
passphrase, it is now showing that it is progressing. Can anyone tell me what I
would need to do next, or if it will complete itself and come back up with
voiceover speaking? Any help greatly appreciate it.

Re: Major problem with Monterey installer if you use vo.

2021-10-30 Thread Mike Arrigo
I had the same issue with the Big Sur install as well. As you said, there is no
way around it, I have to keep a mouse around for that purpose. Once you get to
the install screen you can disconnect it but yes, you will need to connect a
mouse or track pad to continue.

OK, I misunderstood you that you needed Windows. I mostly agree in that case; I
also use Terminal and Linux VMs a lot and rarely need Windows. Even so, I think
not having it at all would be a problem; there are just some things you need
Windows for, including, yes, Office apps, but also running software only on
Windows, like said firmware updater utility. Your situation may differ.

Re: Monitors for Mac mini

2021-10-30 Thread 'Sabahattin Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Of course, a Mac Mini is desktop hardware. Although I’ve found the latest M1
Mini doesn’t require a dummy HDMI adaptor anymore (and, in fact, connecting one
actually slows it down) there’s no getting away from the thermal limitations of
a notebook, especially when it’s closed.

Laptops are for travel. (A bit like “Diamonds are Forever”, but different.) You
can turn a laptop into a desktop, with effort, but it’s still constrained by
size. The setup cost of a laptop may be lower, and that’s useful for travel,
but the size is still too large for the performance if you intend on connecting
a desktop setup (monitor, speakers, keyboard) to it. And, of course, Minis are
very excellent for monitor-free, keyboard-free uses. Laptops contain batteries,
but are arguably still too large for certain truly mobile uses (like sitting
down with them on a lap, in certain cases) and iPads are often preferable. But
the battery, again, reduces setup costs in certain places and for certain
times, especially with the M1, and that’s useful for travel, again, especially
with unpredictable power availability.

If you need a desktop, get a Mini. If you need the monitor included, get an
iMac, but think twice about doing that unless there’s a good reason—you can
find monitors cheaply nowadays. You already need decent headphones or speakers,
whatever you use. Keyboards and trackpads can be wireless. You can use mains
power at your desktop location.

In my opinion, you should only ever consider a laptop if setup cost is a
primary factor, i.e. the balance of financial outlay and convenience means that
having one machine that can move with you is more worthwhile. But, honestly, I
find that that’s rarely the case. Getting the machines you need and deploying
them where you need them will, I think, prove much more effective in the long
run, and you don’t need to compromise on typing experience, screen size (or
presence), sound quality, or performance.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

RE: Apple Music and Siri versus Amazon Music with Alexa, Just Listen

2021-10-30 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Donna,

In no way did I take your comments as criticism.

I do not have my software set to update automatically as I don’t have my
HomePod on, 24 / 7. In my case, I had to restart HomePod several times, etc.
Apple instructed me to manually reset the device, etc.The long and short of
it is, regardless of others’ pleasant experiences with HomePod setup, mine was
not.

Fortunately, there is something out there for everyone.

Subject: Re: Apple Music and Siri versus Amazon Music with Alexa, Just Listen

Hi, Tim,

I’m so glad you posted this. Those were my exact thoughts when I read Mark’s
post. I love my Homepods, and I love Apple Music. I’ve never had any of the
frustrations Mark described, but I do have all my Homepods and Minis set to
automatically update. And as for base, I was surprised by Mark’s comments. I
consider myself someone who really hates too much base, and I’m quite
comfortable with the base level on the HomePod. Of course, one’s tolerance for
base is subjective, so I’m not saying Mark’s assessment is wrong, just that for
me, who also prefers lighter base, the HomePod is just fine.

No offense, Mark, no criticism intended here. We are all entitled to our own
opinions and the ways in which we use and experience tech are highly
subjective. I just wanted to support Tim’s message.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Mark,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I will, though, dispel a few possible
misconceptions pointed out here.

• updating the HomePod. If you have it set to automatically update software,
it will just do it in the middle of the night, or some other convenient time
when you’re not playing music on it. My two HomePods and two HomePod Minis are
all up to date with iOS 15 and I have not touched that interface in months.
• as to the difficulty updating them if not set to update automatically, I’d be
interested in learning why you found it awkward. Again, when in the Home app,
this is a straight forward and logical process in my opinion.
• Apple Music has curated playlists as well. You could say something like “Hey
Siri, play the best of the 70’s”, and she would do just that. Well, it’s a
matter of opinion whether it would actually be the best of the 70’s. When I
tested this, I heard a couple of hours of 70’s music, far too much Disco for my
liking, but some good old 70’s Top 40, like Orleans and Nazareth, even
including some classic Canadian music like BTO and Gordon Lightfoot.
• if bass isn’t your thing, you may wish to go for the HomePod mini instead of
the HomePod. All the same Siri features, a much smaller footprint, much
cheaper, and not near the bass simply due to its smaller size.

Now, I realize that you were simply sharing your own personal preferences, and
we are all definitely welcome to our own feelings on such things. I just
didn’t want people to think that Apple Music was lacking in some manner
compared to Amazon Music. I believe that all these services have their
benefits and drawbacks, but curated playlists is not one of them.

Lastly, if I was in the US, I’d take the HomePod off your hands as they are
rather difficult items to get ahold of nowadays.

Later…

One reason why I have not yet done this is because of the lack of a
device-specific audio equalizer for HomePod.

For the most part, I had kind of given up on setting up any kind of audio
ambient system in my house if for no other reason than doing so seemed less
and less important.

Okay, now we go back to September 27th, 2021; the day upon which my beloved
Windows 7 PC virtually blew up; while it did not explode, it did, in fact
begin to smoke (smile), no kidding.

For the next two weeks or so, I began my long journey into the world of
Windows 10 on a new desktop PC, Fusion, a new version of iTunes for Windows,
and more. Add to this the fact that my primary router, which I had been
using for over 10 years, also stopped working during this period.

Later…
