Google Drive

2021-11-17 Thread Lorie McCloud
a few weeks ago Google Drive got changed again. I think it went from backup and
sync back to Google Drive. anyway, I'm trying to figure out how to turn on link
sharing and not having much luck. when I copy a link to the clipboard I get the
message that link sharing is off but I don't know how to change that even
though I've gone up there and poked around.

thanks.

You can also go directly to mailboxes in your favorites list by using the CMD
key plus a NumberRow key.
For example, you can go directly to the Inbox, by pressing CMD + NumberRow 1.

After pairing your watch with your new iPhone, you will need to go to the Watch
app on your new iPhone, and enable the ability to unlock your watch with your
iPhone again.

Since this setting is device specific, you need to do this every time you get a
new iPhone, or unpair and then re-pair your watch.

Apple's Self Service Repair answers critics, doesn't help users

Apple's Self Service Repair answers critics, doesn't help users
William Gallagher Nov 17,
2021

Just because you can do something, it doesn't mean you will. Apple may be
counting on that with its new Self Service Repair program, as repairs are
likely to come with a high initial outlay.

Apple should be applauded for launching its Self Service Repair program
.
Keep the din to a minimum, though, because it almost certainly did it to head
off future legislation.

The new program has been announced as Apple has spent millions lobbying against
right to repair legislation being considered by states nationwide, such as the
New York Senate
,
 and so many more.

Watch the Latest from AppleInsider TV

7 iPhone 13 Pro Features You May Have Missed!

However, beneath the basic idea that users will be able to repair their iPhone
or Mac, there are hidden costs — and we don't yet know what all of them will be.

Self Service Repair will work for parts in much the same way that Apple's
trade-in program for the Mac and the iPhone currently does. Just as with that
trade-in, the user must pay the full price for a part, and then get refunded
the worth of their old one, once Apple has inspected it.

What Apple does not say is what the cost of those components will be. The way
it works with Apple authorized repair centers is that they have to pay a
greatly inflated price for the component up front.

Apple refers to a replaced part now as being a "core." Following repair, when
that broken part is returned to Apple, the servicer gets a credit for it.

Again, Apple has not indicated how this will work with the new program. But for
instance it has been common for a service center to pay $1,000 or more for a
part up front, and then eventually get $800 back.

Hidden costs

The new program has been announced with few details, which we have asked about.
One element seems to make it clear that there will be another key fee.

"[A] customer will place an order for the Apple genuine parts and tools using
the Apple Self Service Repair Online Store," says Apple, very specifically
mentioning the tools.

So alongside whatever the cost of the component is, users will have to buy
Apple tools and it's not yet clear if one tool purchase will cover future
repairs even for the same part. For an individual intending to make one repair
to their one device, it's unlikely to be a good balance of what you get versus
what you pay for.

Which might be what Apple is counting on.

Apple does stress that for "the vast majority of customers, visiting a
professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple
parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair."

That is unquestionably true, given how there are one billion people

using iPhones. Apple's customer base today works out at around 25 iPhone users
to every one Mac user, and its old hobbyist days are decades behind it.

An AppleInsider reader on the aggregate is more technically inclined, and more
regulars know enough to effect a repair. The vast majority of Apple's customers
do not, and many will try anyway.

Apple says that the program will initially "focus on the most commonly
serviced" parts, such as the iPhone's "display, battery, and camera." Repair,
in this case, really means replacing components, but swapping parts out risks
damaging others.

For example, in most battery swaps for the iPhone, the screen needs to be
removed. This is not a simple procedure, and the screen is easily broken during
the process with even the most minor of slip-ups or inappropriate force
application.

Previously, Apple has objected to the Right to Repair movement by saying that
the iPhone, for instance, is "too complex" for untrained consumers

to repair. The company has also said that inexperienced users could easily
puncture the lithium-ion battery in an iPhone, and injure themselves.

Injuries may happen, and Apple is certain to have considered how likely it is
to be sued over some botched repairs. Nonetheless, Apple has been under
pressure to enact some kind of right to repair service — even Steve Wozniak

has said it should — and this new program is a response to that.

Yet its real worth is as a response to critics, and as a way of warding off
future

Monterey and Safari and images

2021-11-17 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest Monterey on a 2018 iMac with an intel processor. I
thought that Safari in Monterey would do OCR on images and so speak the text in
those images. Alas that does not happen for me.Microsoft Edge does such OCR and
does a great job speaking the text in images on a web page and also in a PDF
file.
Should I expect Safari to speak the text in images? I have image recognition
set on in the VO utility. Do I need to do any other setup?
Many thanks … Paul Hopewell

Apple launches 'Self Service Repair,' allowing you to do your own iPhone screen repairs and more: 9 to 5 Mac

2021-11-17 Thread M. Taylor
Apple launches 'Self Service Repair,' allowing you to do your own iPhone
screen repairs and more

By Chance Miller

Apple has a big announcement for the repair industry today. The new "Self
Service Repair" program will allow customers to complete their own repairs
on their devices, including common repairs such as battery replacements,
iPhone screen replacements, and more.
Through the new Self Service Repair program, customers will have access to
Apple genuine parts and tools to complete the repairs.
Apple says that Self Service Repair will first be available for the iPhone
12 and iPhone 13, followed by M1 Macs in the future. The program will launch
first in the United States in early 2022, followed by additional countries
throughout the rest of the year.
Apple explains:
Apple today announced Self Service Repair, which will allow customers who
are comfortable with completing their own repairs access to Apple genuine
parts and tools. Available first for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups,
and soon to be followed by Mac computers featuring M1 chips, Self Service
Repair will be available early next year in the US and expand to additional
countries throughout 2022. Customers join more than 5,000 Apple Authorized
Service Providers (AASPs) and 2,800 Independent Repair Providers who have
access to these parts, tools, and manuals.
Apple says that the initial phase of the program will give customers access
to genuine Apple parts and tools for the most commonly serviced modules,
such as the iPhone display, battery, and camera. The company says
"additional repairs will be available later next year."
In a statement, Jeff Williams, Apple COO, said that this new program will
give customers "even more choice" if they need to have their devices
repaired:
"Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even
more choice if a repair is needed. In the past three years, Apple has nearly
doubled the number of service locations with access to Apple genuine parts,
tools, and training, and now we're providing an option for those who wish to
complete their own repairs."
This is a major announcement from Apple, which has generally opposed any
sort of at-home or even third-party repairs. Through this program, customers
will be able to purchase genuine Apple parts, access documentation, and more
and complete repairs themselves. We are still awaiting more details on
things like pricing and qualifications.

The announcement also comes as Apple faces growing pressure amid the Right
to Repair movement. Just earlier this year the FTC announced a new policy to
step up law enforcement against repair restrictions.

iMac 2019 27-inch 2 TB SSD, 8 GB RAM, 3.6 GHz 8-core I9 For Sale in the UK @£2700

2021-11-17 Thread 'Sabahattin Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
I have for sale in the UK an iMac 27-inch, early 2019 with:
- 8-core I9 3.6 GHz
- 8 GB RAM (user-upgradable to 128 GB but see below)
- 2 TB SSD
- 8 GB VRAM (Vega graphics)

I am asking £2700 for this configuration.

Notable distinctions: this is the last Intel iMac but one, and which does not
contain the T2 security chip, and which is the last to run macOS 10.14 Mojave
or a vanilla Windows installation directly on hardware. The T2 brought some
benefits, but it made running other operating systems more difficult (virtual
machines are always fine). If you need clarification, please let me know. You
must decide whether this is important.

I can supply the machine with 128 GB of RAM preinstalled. If that is what you
want, I’ll charge £300 extra, making the total £3000.

Don’t reply to this message with your offer. Send your reply directly to
listse...@me.com .

I received permission for posting this ad to the list from the list moderator.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Les, Thank you very much for this. After going into the view menu and showing
