Re: Need recommendations for best Time Machine drive solution. SSD vs conventional and brand recommendations for either
I find that Western digital drives last an average of 18 months so I have switched to Seagate drives for backing up files. Re: Does making Dropbox folders online only decrease local disk consumption?
One thing I will say about this iCloud thing. I initiated the move of this 59 gB folder and it’s taking forever to even begin. I realize moving 59GB, essentially downloading it, will take a long time. But it’s amazing that it’s still saying “Preparing to move…” after at least fifteen minutes. I wonder how long I should wait before stopping this and moving the files using Sneaker net from my Windows machine via thumb drive to my Mac and deleting the whole mess from iCloud. Thoughts? > On Jul 2, 2023, at 7:30 PM, Herbie Allen wrote: > > You can make them online only on the Mac side, but I’m not completely sure on > the Windows side when it comes to iCloud. Re: Does making Dropbox folders online only decrease local disk consumption?
I’ve decided to move the 59GB video collection to my Mac desktop. That should take it out of iCloud Drive and free up Windows disk space. If I want to see a particular portion of this video collection on my phone, I’ll move that particular portion temporarily back into iCloud, watch it and then remove it again. Thanks everybody. > On Jul 2, 2023, at 7:30 PM, Herbie Allen wrote: > > You can make them online only on the Mac side, but I’m not completely sure on > the Windows side when it comes to iCloud. Re: Does making Dropbox folders online only decrease local disk consumption?
Let me make the iCloud thing a little clearer. I made an iCloud Drive shortcut on my Win10 machine as I said. It turns out that I placed a huge collection of video files in iCloud Drive because I thought I might want to watch them on my iPhone at some point. I guess I’ll move them to DB and use my DB iPhone app because I assume I can make them online only in DB whereas I can’t do that in iCloud. If they’re uploading, then yeah they won’t appear yet on all devices. If they’re online only, then I think they will default to that on all devices. Re: Does making Dropbox folders online only decrease local disk consumption?
Thanks Brandon. As I write this, some of the files are still populating across machines. That is, I can see them on the Windows machine but not on my Mac. That suggests that they are not yet fully uploaded. I’m guessing that I’ll see them on the Mac when they’ve made it all the way up to DB itself. We’re talking about 10GB of stuff and that might take a minute. Should I further assume that the online only status will e conferred upon these files once they appear on all devices associated with this account? SSD are better of course and you can find pretty good deals on amazon. It really depends on how many back ups you want to save on that drive, and of couse the amount of storage space you need. You can find a 4 tb ssd external on amazon for 220 to 260. Re: Junk Folders No Longer Available on Mac
Bill, This is a bit complicated, but I think you need to open your mailboxes to expose those junk folders. When you are in the list of mailboxes, interact with VO+shift+downarrow. Then you move up/down the list using VO+up arrow or down arrow. When you reach something like “on my Mac” or the name of your account, it may indicate that it is collapsed. If so, expand with VO+space. This will expose folders associated with that account or those on your Mac. If you want any of those folders to be showing all the time, then add it to your favorites or just leave them expanded. I personally don’t like having three different junk folders and extra inboxes in my mailbox list, so I go back to the main folder such as “On my Mac” and collapse it again with another VO+spacebar. Then stop the interaction with VO+shift+up arrow. Any of those exposed folders will be visible in your mailbox area and you can visit them with a simple use of the up or down arrow. I won’t go into what the heck “On my Mac” actually is, but it is something you can configure in your mail settings, but there should always be a main folder for all accounts you have set up on your Mac mail app. What I do is to put the inbox of each of my accounts in the favorites and only expose the main account that I use all the time. My other two account and the “on my Mac” account I keep compressed so they don’t clutter up my folders list.
