Hi,

I had an iMac from 2013 that could only run Catalina. That thing ran pretty
slow even after a fresh install and I just assumed it was old hardware. The
machine finally died after 10 years after a storm fried up the system. I gave
it to someone who need a system since hers was out. In any event, I am
suprizwed that the MBA from 2013 can even run mixer. I have an Intel Mac mini

Re: Ailing 2013 MacBook Air

2023-12-29 Thread Brad Snyder
Before doing anything, I would wait and see if the fan activity ceases after a
while.
Could be that the newly installed OS is busy indexing data, and once this
process is completed, the fan activity will return to normal.

Another possibility besides more resource intenvive software, is dust or
link buildup in the venting areas. If you have a nearby Apple store, there

Amazon Prime Apple TV app channels

2023-12-29 Thread sarai.bucciarelli
Wow:

What did they do to the Apple TV Prime video app?

I cannot locate any of my subscribed channels, or purchased movies.

Nothing is appearing under my stuff.

2023-12-29 Thread joseph hudson
Hi Anders, I finally managed to download it and find it. However, it appears to
be an accessible. Once I downloaded it, I proceeded to go to my downloads
folder and open, was able to put in my email address to login, and then I got
to the password area and what is unable to type in my password. So, it does not
work. I wouldn't waste your time.

Re: Using Parallels

2023-12-29 Thread Michael Babcock
Someone shared this on mastodon the other day, and it blew my mind. Hopefully
it'll help you!

What I suggest is map these to either numb pad or keyboard commanders, and then
you can toggle the behavior of your caps key on the Mac. I'll copy the read me
below.

I'll share a link feel free to check out the Apple, scripts on your own, but if
you set the caps key to an insert key, then using laptop, layout, with jaws on
windows in parallel, seems to be fairly well for me. The only major pain that I
have is control, left and right arrows tend to not move me word by word…

# Change keyboard for Virtual machine

AppleScript to change the behaviour of the caps lock key for Virtual machines

## Description

This repository includes some apple scripts to modify the behaviour of the
physical keyboard.

### KeyboardForVM

This AppleScript modifies the behaviour of the **caps lock** key changing it
for other key.

This function is usefull for blind developers who needs to use a screen reader
in a Virtual machine.

When a Windows virtual machine is running the screen readers usually use the
**Insert** key as the *HotKey* for the screen reader but this key is not
available in a MacOS keyboard.

Using this script the key *Caps lock* can be changed for other key to manage a
screen reader in the Virtual machine.

 Usage

Run the script to show the behaviour selector for the **Caps lock** key and
press *Enter*.

You have to use this script when you will start a Virtual machine app.

### KeyboardRemapper

This script allows us to remap a key with other one.

The available keys are: caps lock, left shift, right shift, left command, right
command, left alt, right alt, left control and right control.

 Usage

Run the script to remap one of the available keys to other one.

If you need to remap more keys you have to run the script again.

### ResetCapsLock

This AppleScript resets the behaviour of the **caps lock** key.

This function is usefull for blind developers who needs to use a screen reader
in MacOS.

 Usage

Run the script to aply the remap to the **Capslock** key.

You have to use this script when you finish to use a Virtual machine app.

### RemapCapsLockToInsert

This AppleScript modifies the behaviour of the **caps lock** key changing it to
the **Insert** key.

This function is usefull for blind developers who needs to use a screen reader
in a Virtual machine.

When a Windows virtual machine is running the screen readers usually use the
**Insert** key as the *HotKey* for the screen reader but this key is not
available in a MacOS keyboard.

 Usage

Run the script to aply the remap to the **Capslock** key.

You have to use this script when you will start a Virtual machine app.

## Information

These scripts use the command **hidutil**.
These changes are not permanent and the changes will be back when you reboot
your machine or when you close your user session.

### Tips

You can convert these scripts in an application to run it easily.

To do this follow these steps:

* Open this script in the *Script editor*
* In the File menu choose the *Export* option
* In the Field *format* select *Application* and press the button *Save*
* Copy the new Application in your applications folder.

## Localization

The scripts are translated to English and Spanish.

You can translate each script changing the values in the **on setup()**
function.

Please, contact me to include new translations for these scripts.

Re: Ailing 2013 MacBook Air

2023-12-29 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Phil:

I still use my 2013 era Mac Air. I am fully updated to Big Sur, the
lates it seems there will ever be for those older machines.

I can easily get my Air into a situations where the fans are running
almost constantly. My solution is to minimize how many applications I
keep open on the Air. There's an old saying about software expanding to
take advantage of newer, more powerful hardware. I've always thought
those fans are illustrating that old principle.

Best,
Janina

Re: VMware Fusion/Player

2023-12-29 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Let's say that I stumble along with the Mac Terminal whilst on the road
with my Macbook. For me it's horribly clunky to do much of anything
command line through that app, but it's not impossible in most
situations.

This thread suggests to me that I should take another look at Parallels,
though. I don't even need the Linux desktop, just the command line shell
environment. This was working very well indeed on my old Mac Air. My
problems started when I got my M2.

Re: Using Parallels

2023-12-29 Thread Phil Halton
I remember that sharp keys was the solution I used several years back when I was using VMware to run windows on a Mac. I think at that point VMware also had a facility to do some key remapping and I use that method as well. You won’t go wrong using sharp keys though. I’d kind of like to set up windows on my new killer MacBook Pro with the M3 Pro chip, but I just don’t have the interest anymore. I was thinking of getting some inexpensive laptop with windows installed but I don’t know what’s out there that’s worth buying anymore.  Any suggestions on that line would be appreciated as well. Sent from my IPhoneOn Dec 29, 2023, at 12:02 PM, 'Matt Turner' via MacVisionaries wrote:I’ve heard of that.I’ve also  tried vm where and could never get it to work.On Dec 29, 2023, at 11:58 AM, Kelly Ford wrote:Hello,The solution I use here is to remap a different key on the Windows VM to be Capslock. Ailing 2013 MacBook Air

2023-12-29 Thread Phil Halton
I have an older MacBook Air from 2013 that is exhibiting a heck of a lot of fan
activity these days. I upgraded to a MacBook Pro with the M3 Pro chip and I’m
very happy with it but I’m trying to put some use to the old air. Last night I
reinstalled the operating system after doing some first aid through disc
utility And there’s still fan activity as far as I can tell. I reinstalled
Catalina. I did not do a full erase and clean install, only a reinstall of the
OS. I’m wondering, any ideas why all this fan activity is it aging Hardware? Or
is it some kind of Software problem, or even just data problems from years
built up without ever erasing and reformatting. I’ll be glad to hear any ideas
as to how I can bring this thing back to a reasonably good state of operation
and if that means full of erasure and reinstall then I’d be willing to do that.
Frankly I don’t see why this thing should be choking on itself the way it is.
Thanks for any advice.

Re: Using Parallels

2023-12-29 Thread Kelly Ford
Hello,

The solution I use here is to remap a different key on the Windows VM to be
Capslock. I typically turn the accent/tilde key into Capslock. You can find a
program called Sharp Keys to do this. It basically edits a registry value.

You can also look for PowerToys in the Windows App Store. That also does key
remapping.

As strange as it seems, telling VoiceOver to use the CAPSLOCK key and
