VO on iOS and Russian Braille Output

2019-09-08 Thread B G
Friends,
Anyone know how to get VO on iOS - in this instance the latest edition
on an iPhone SE - to output Russian Braille on a BrailleConnect 40
display?
I am getting question marks in uncontracted mode or the unicode values
in contracted mode; neither very helpful.
Any tips welcome.
With thanks, B.

Accessible apps for the London Tube

2019-06-15 Thread B G
I've installed Tube Map on the iPhone but for some reason it's not
letting me past the first screen/page which is offering to quickly
show me around, I quote. Are there accessible alternatives to Tube
Map?
Many thanks, Ben

Re: Good Quality Speakers for the Mac Mini

2019-06-12 Thread B G
My apologies if below content strays off-topic. i heard this a short
while ago and thought it would be a fun way of testing the quality of
your speakers. granted it is Youtube and therefore not your CD player
(golly, giving away my age now in this age of streaming audio) but it
should be sufficient to get a measure of the depth and range. Here is
the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU5rpnBxZnU

Awaiting your findings with bated breath.

Re: high quality speakers for mac mini

2019-06-10 Thread B G
Thank you. I've found a pair on Amazon for £230 which is reasonable I
suppose. I wonder, are they wall mountable?
Thanks also to everyone else for their recommendations.
I was going to buy a monitor with built-in speakers but then it
occurred to me that for £120 I might not get the audio quality I would
be happy with. There's nothing worse than tinny, substandard speakers
to assault your eardrums. There we are. *smile*

Good Quality Speakers for the Mac Mini

2019-06-10 Thread B G
I thought I'd consult the list on this considering we screen-reader
users on average tend to be more selective about the quality of our
audio equipment. In short, I'm looking for either a decent set of
speakers or a monitor with a decent pair of built-in speakers. There's
a surprising dearth of quality gear in the market - on Amazon at any
rate. Can the list offer any recommendations?
Much obliged, Ben

None of the choices available on the rotor will take you to the next
telephone number - which would just be a sequence of digits and

The idea, to recap, is a general screen search tool, in other words, a

You'd be able to conjure up search within any app, in any screen
(hence the term general) and assuming the success of the search, shift
focus on to your quarry in one single leap, as it were.

Again, do please feel free to ask if you're unclear about anything.

General Screen search on iOS

2019-06-07 Thread B G
Unless the feature exists already -- and has therefore hitherto
escaped my notice -- a general screen search tool on iOS would come
in very handy. Suppose you're in Safari and the information, e.g. a
phone number, is many lines or even screens down. Rather than
traversing everything before you get to it, you would perform a unique
gesture, e.g. a two-finger rest i.e. tap and hold in position,
followed by a thumb swipe to pull up a search dialogue box. You would
enter your search text and press enter (or perform a two-finger right
swipe on the onscreen Braille keypad) and voila, focus is positioned
at the start of your search result! Of course, you could make the
feature as fancy and elaborate as you want but its very basic function
should be searching for the next occurrence of the search string, and
positioning focus at start of said string.
What does the list think? Any comments, criticisms, any flaws in the
idea, all welcome.
I'm hoping once we've hammered out something we could all agree on we
will then present it to Apple as a feature request.

Buying a mac: back to the drawing board

2019-06-01 Thread B G
apple have just confirmed the refund for the MacBook by email. I
decided that a mac Mini would meet my use-cases more wholesomely than
a MacBook. Initially the plan was to stick to the same hardware
parameters - 16GB ram, 256GB ssd and an i5 processor. The nice man
from Apple however is offering me a much more impressive machine for a
very reasonable price. it has a 32GB ram, 256GB ssd and an i7
processor. yes, plenty oomf there ladies and gentlemen but my question
is, do I need that much power given what I would use it for? To recap,
my two main use-cases are: (a) running copies of MS Windows
simultaneously on VMWare Fusion and (b) programming for Mac OS and
iOS. At a later date I might even decide to load it with Logic pro
and N.I. for making music, but that really is not a priority at this
point in time.
In short, will a machine of that description offer marked, significant
improvement over one with the specification I previously had in mind?
Thoughts from everyone and specially the more experienced hacks would
be gratefully received.
Incidentally, I am typing this in the web box which offers me no
spell-check; so apologies for any spelling error.
With thanks, Benji

Navigation apps on iOS

2019-05-31 Thread B G
Was wondering if the list had any suggestions for navigation apps on
iOS. I am looking for one which would guide me to locations by simply
entering the address and postcode - just like the sat nav thing in
cars albeit designed with sight-impaired users in mind, naturally.
*smile*
I live in the UK in case it affects my choices.
Thanks, B.

Update on the Mac OS Feature suggestion

2019-05-29 Thread B G
Thought I'd let you know that Apple has just been in touch to say
thank you etc. and that the ideas have been passed on to the boffins.
So, do feel free to email them in if you haven't already. With hope
they'll be pushed higher up their wish list and implemented in the not
too distant.

Re: To Add to the idea

2019-05-27 Thread B G
N.B. is short for Nota Bene which literally means 'note well' in Latin
and it is used to draw the reader's attention to the line that it
precedes. You said something about German systems being well designed
albeit overly complex and I was reminded of the well-known German car
brand, Mercedes for upholding a similar design approach.
N.B. 'Everything must be made as simple as possible and not simpler.'
Albert Einstein.
'Funny' can mean laughable or strange, peculiar. 'Fun' can mean
enjoyable, amusing. The distinctions can be a bit blurred in places;
hence your understandable confusion. Do look them up here at:
https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/english where you'll find example
sentences for both. If still unclear then feel free to drop me a line
privately.

maybe a simplified Braille code for German would address the
above-mentioned et al. I have heard of systems which are entirely in
long-hand i.e. with no contraction; not sure if the underlying
rationale is to avoid the type of problems you're citing.

Re: To Add to the idea

Good point. How about having a hotkey toggle for switching in an out
of Braille input mode? Say, VO with some key or another to turn on
Braille and a chorded shortcut to switch back to the qwerty layout.
You can't use more than one keyboard at a time in any case.

I was under the impression that German Braille was very well
constructed albeit a little rule-heavy, not wishing to get into German
stereotypes, of course. *smile*

Re: Just a thought, an idea for VO on Mac OS

2019-05-27 Thread B G
Do you mean the trackpad? My addition to the idea should address that.
You would use your qwerty keys to input Braille. To recap, F, D, S, J,
K, L would correspond to dots 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6; and a and the
semicolon to 7 and 8. Of course, one could build upon that and
introduce the chord concept first modeled by Blazy Engineering in
their BnS products. The basis for the idea being the combination of
the space key (or bar) with a Braille character to execute commands
e.g. space-o (i.e. space together with dots 1, 3, and 5) to substitute
for command (Apple) o for opening a file/folder; you get the idea.
*smile*
on the MacBook keyboard this would solve - at least in part -
negotiating with the overly compactness of the keyboard as some might
see it. it would certainly increase input speed and reduce error
corollation as it were on the conventional qwerty keyboard. Worth a
reminder that the existing qwerty layout was designed - the original
design was in fact altered - in order to save early typewriters from
fast typists who were apparently wrecking them with merciless
dexterity. *smile*
Comments, criticisms, suggestions, all welcome.

2019-05-27 Thread B G
One could have some of the qwerty keys turned into Braille input keys
- similar to the the idea originally introduced by Duxbury in the
90's. Thus, your f, d, s, j, k, l keys would map to dots 1, 2, 3, 4,
5, 6, and the a and ; (semicolon) keys to dots 7 and 8.

What do we think?

Yes, makes perfect sense, very well written and all, thank you very much.
I've decided that mastering Pages in conjunction with VO is the best
place to start my journey in Mac OS.
All best, Ben

Well, goodness me, how is this for coincidence. Only this morning I
was wondering if you can select from a list of suggestions as you can
on iOS (by flicking up or down). I haven't found an answer yet.

No it was the table in the VoiceOver Quick start tutorial. it seemed
to go all over the place. Shift-VO-Home took you up to row 1 column 1
but Shift-VOEnd was a different, more adventurous experience, never
knowing quite where you might end up. *smile*

Re: Buying a macbook Air - the latest

2019-05-09 Thread B G
Yes, running VM would be nice but it's not part of my use cases for
this machine. I will try it and see what happens. Will be reporting
my findings here.
What kind of files software did you have in mind for which you believe
256GB might not be sufficient?
as for a case I have asked a friend - an Apple fanatic - to lend me a
hand to pick a good one on Amazon. He's emailed me a couple of links.
I actually wanted one with the Apple logo on it; tells you how much of
a showoff I am I suppose. *grin*

Now, can you tell me a bit more about this Magic keyboard please? What
makes it so special for VO users?
Thanks
Ben

2019-05-08 Thread B G
While I scour the web for books and articles on Mac OS, was wondering
if the list had any good urls and or titles to recommend. I am a total
beginner and therefore not taking anything for granted.

Cheers,

Buying a macbook Air - the latest

2019-05-08 Thread B G
Hi,
The latest is a MacBook Air 2018 with 16GB ram, 256GB ssd. I'm going
to assume it will be powerful enough for my xcode (programming) needs.
Judging from the responses it'll also be fine for running VM and
Windows 10. Can the list think of anything else I should be mindful
of? What about the type of carry case or sleeve the list favours,
external keyboard, trackpad, etc. any last minute advice would be
gratefully received.
Thank you
Ben

Does a mac Mini have to be plugged into a display at all times?

2019-05-07 Thread B G
Hi,
Something else I read a while ago, that for a Mac mini to work well or
to work at all it had to be plugged into a monitor which is rather
superfluous for most VO users. I seem to remember also reading about
a sort of adaptor, a dongle, which could be used instead of a monitor.
Anyway, over to the list.

I am incidentally totally new to Mac OS and all my knowledge comes

Worth noting that VMWare Fusion allows you to share the clipboard
between Mac OS and MS Windows - it's like running another piece of
software on top of Mac OS; needless to say that it isn't without its
own set of challenges vis a vis sharing hardware resources and so
forth. Moreover, I'm not sure that even your 16GB ram will be
sufficient for running Windows on VM very smoothly. So you're probably
better off with Bootcamp.
Good luck
Ben

New List member, buying a new Macbook

2019-05-05 Thread B G
Hi there,
Ben here, just joined the list, so go gently on me please. *smile*
I was wondering if the list had any tips on buying a new MacBook. I'm
thinking of finally taking the plunge into the world of iOS and indeed
Mac OS software development. So far the MacBook Air (2018) with 16GB
ram and 128SSD seems the most attractive choice. I have however been
informed that 128gb ssd won't be adequate for xcode and associated
tools on top of the usual load of software and stored data. What does
the list think?
Looking forward to your responses.
Cheers,
Ben
