An Apple Owner at last :)
Hi All! I've just received my Mac mini, and I look forward to playing with it. I got the 799$ model. Before I used to play a bit with Macs for other people, but this time it's the first for me to play with it as the exclusive owner :) of the yummy Apple :) .. Can I hook one of those new USB display to the Mac Mini? If I connect the display to the USB directly, I guess I'd not need the TV adapter to vga? Does anyone have any suggestions to me to make my Mac Mini experience great, and to smooth my transition from the windows world to the Snow Leopard world?? As Jonathan says, you should be able to use the install DVD to set up an Admin account and password if one is not present, but the problem is that if there were any other system actions that have been performed that required login and password, you will lose the record of these permissions that have been kept in the system's keychain permission records. Problem is, you'll have to type in an old password (twice, to verify your typing) and then a new password. If there really was no old password, you can leave the old password field empty and just press enter each time, then type in your new password. But if you couldn't just type in a new password the way that Max suggested, the chances are that there was a password set up, but your friend either didn't know it or has forgotten it, because he has set up his machine to allow him to automatically log in. Remember when you type user name and password that these entries may be case sensitive. I'm not sure how to proceed if this is the case and you can't set a password. My experience with the pac mate and street talk, is that: 1, the gps receiver provided with the package can be far too tardy in tracking satelites, or being tracked by them, take your pick. 2, you need a blue tooth card installed in one of the cf slots, and your maps installed in the other, which means you need to do some jiggling around and setting up before you can get going. 3, I found that the entire setup was a hoffible drain on the pm battery. There are various keys that you can hold down while the Mac is booting that determine the boot mode. Most of these stand for modes that are easy to remember. C stands for Boot from inserted CD or DVD; the Shift key stands for Boot into Safe mode (a restricted access mode where you only bring up a subset of the operating system where audio and network connections are disabled -- this mode is not accessible, but certain problems can be fixed by just booting into this mode (without logging in), and then rebooting normally; T stands for boot into target disk mode (when you connect to another Mac via a Firewire cable and use its disk to boot the second machine -- this no longer works with the newest MacBooks that have no Firewire ports; D' stands for boot from the hard drive, etc. For the formal instructions see this Apple help article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/11627.html (Mac OS X 10.5 Help: If you forget your Administrator Password) This describes the boot sequence and how to navigate to reset the password. Just make sure to start up VoiceOver as your first action after the Mac boots from the install disc (while you hold down the C key. You may need to use Fn-Command-F5 on the laptop instead of Command-F5. (I don't remember, so you may have to try both to start up VoiceOver). Re: Updating Mac 10.5 (password)
Thanks Esther for this thorough step by step explanation. I was able to check the account setting, and it asked me to enter old password. I left it empty, and I typed a new password but this didn't work. I noticed something strange though; under password, there is a field called password hint (or something of this sort) and the first name of my friend in lowercase was written. I tried to type this in both old and new password, but it didn't work. I asked my friend about the DVD that came with his Mac, but he said he didn't remember seeing a DVD with his MacBook. I asked him to search for it -- hopping he'll find it.. IF he didn't find the DVD, is there other way to update his Mac? i.e. can I download from apple website the updates directly, and install them in the machine. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated. Re: voice over comes to the I phone
At least the guys at Apple were honest and mentioned that some 3rd programs wouldn't work. I believe this is a bold statement to say. Hats off to Apple. Most companies that sells VI products will usually boast about how great the product is and that it's the best in the market. The name of the game is honesty and not greed... Nothing can be great from the first attempt; however, some are creative when it comes to improving their products, and some like to make dramatic announcement with marginal improvement.. Apple doesn't belong to the latter. Wouldn't you think that they knew that over time they anticipated adding voice over to the iPhone? And, we know that VO was on the Mac for a few years previous to it going to the iPhone. It would seem that as they helped developers design applications that they have been giving them the tools to make them accessible? So, what I'm really saying is that yesterday might not have been the first time that developers heard about VO on the iPhone. Or, its possible that they've just been developing applications following design specifications from Apple that will enable us to have good access to a lot of the applications. Not sure, just thinking. I'm thinking that games and some of the other very graphical applications won't work for us but many are very text rich and that could work. Also, I know there is a Kendle application and I wonder if we can get access to those books? This is were I might really be wrong, but from what I heard yesterday from the WWDC keynote, and from what I've read, developers who make iPhone apps can only use a series of tools provided by Apple, with some 1000 API's, to create their software. So in such a restricted environment (that is, if I'm still not really wrong) shouldn't most apps just work with VO? Not to say it won't be possible. And this feature likely won't fix apps that simply expose nothing (or very little) to VO in the first place. All that said, my understanding is that iPhone apps, like most modern OS X apps, use a common set of development tools and standard controls. This should mean that most will be at least somewhat accessible from the start.
