Re: M1 Mac mini just beeps

2022-07-14 Thread Paul Mimms
it will probably be most effective to use something like AIRA or be my eyes, if
not a sighted person, to tell you what’s going on by viewing the screen. Wish I
could come up with an answer but I hope you can find one yourself soon.

Scanning software that works with Mac

2021-01-27 Thread Paul Mimms
I'm sure someone can advise me on what is a workable solution for scanning on a
Mac. I have found recently that docuscan plus will not work with my new scanner
printer combo. What is the software works with Mac, especially with the
printer scanner combos that offer wireless scanning. Thanks in advance to any
and all.

Re: Watching films on Ipad.

2020-06-16 Thread Paul Mimms
I hope I’m right here in saying that if you buy films from places like the
iTunes Store you have them stored in the cloud and you can access them anywhere
through your iTunes account. However if you’re doing Netflix you simply watch
online. I don’t know what other sources you are using to get your films but it
could make a difference. Hope this helps at least a tiny bit. also, whatever
you can do on your phone, you can probably do on your iPhone, given that your
phone is an iPhone.

Press the command key plus F5 to start a voiceover. If you accidentally muted
the speech tap the trackpad twice with three fingers to unmute it.

One thing to try is looking on Amazon for ear hooks. They attached to the stem
of the AirPods, all three series. The hook goes around your ear and does pretty
well and keeping them in your ear rather than on the ground. That’s especially
useful if you’re only using one at a time

I guess I get the same results as the rest of you are getting when my 2014 MBP
running Sierra boots up . it doesn't say anything until it starts up then it
asks for username, and I found out that after I type the username, I can tab
and it will prompt for the password. Then I tap enter aget the three beeps and
proceed into the syhstem.

Re: Opinions wanted: AirPods vs Aftershokz

2017-06-08 Thread Paul Mimms
Actually, I find the comfort can actually be a problem with the AirPods. They
are so comfortable to me, that I can actually drop one and not realize it
because they're not so noticeable when you wear them. As for music and call
quality. They are much better than the aftershocks, in my experience. I also
found the strap on Amazon so you could join the two if you do fear dropping one
or both. You can also buy what they call ear hooks, but my first experience was
that they didn't allow the AirPods to disengage when removed from the year. So
I'm back to using a strap at times, but taking one out when walking.

Office 2016 for Mac is accessible. I won't say it's perfect, but it is very
usable, and that you access made the features you were used to when you were
working with windows. I used interchangeably with pages, depending out what I

How about a banking account program that will print checks, such as the 3-part

Due to past and recent posts on the subject, I’ve been recently inspired to

owns the rights to the Scourby narration and it appears that they all ready
have something in the works. It is at http://scourby.com. It appears that
they already have an IOS version that is usable with Voiceover. I personally
own the CD set and I can say that Scourby’s narration is amazing.

I would like to hear any feedback in regards to whether or not there is any
need for pursuing such a project. If their approach isn’t what people hear
are looking for etc. If not, then what are people looking for in a Bible
app? It certainly wouldn’t be practical for me to incorporate Scourby’s
narration into an app as they own the rights and even if I got permission,
they could revoke it any time they so choosed.
 Thanks.

Re: Bluetooth Headsets and VoiceOver

2012-10-17 Thread Paul Mimms

I have experienced the same frustrating and disappointing circumstances.
On 10/15/2012 11:17 PM, Timothy Hornik wrote:

I am trying to set up a bluetooth headset, LG Tone, on a Mac Mini with 10.8.2.
My goal is to use the headset for VoiceOver, and an audio system for playing
the various sounds like movies and music. I was able to have everything set up
properly, but noticed every time I disconnected or turned off the bluetooth
headset, I would lose VoiceOver altogether. The settings in VoiceOver Sounds
has output to default. This theoretically means the bluetooth set and then
internal speaker when the headset is disconnected. Additionally, I receive an
error message stating that an error occurred with the audio headset and if I
would stop using it. When I reconnect the bluetooth headset, I have to simply
restart my system as Voice Over no longer is broadcasted through any of the
speaker options.

The main system preferences sound output is set to the main external speakers.
I had to additionally change my output in VLC, as it was set to default like
Voice Over is.

Any Ideas? I am just not properly disconnecting something?

Subject: found scanning program for the Mac

Hi guys.
I wanted to tell y'all about the scanning program that I saw at the
exhibits at NFB today. True, it costs $1200, but it comes with a
camera sort of like the Purl camera.

I had to get it going for them because the guy that knew about it
wasn't at the table at the time I showed up. He came right after I
got it going. It wouldn't talk at first. Who knows where it was on
the screen. Like OpenBook, you don't use the screen reader while it's
running. However, I had to turn their VoiceOver on, press command q
and get out of their program, and then call it back up again, after I
turned off their track pad. The person that was sitting there keeping
watch while the developer was gone for a little bit, I guess was a
Windows user. Anyway, I got the program going.

The developer that came back was very knowledgeable. He told me they
had a former Kurzweil engineer with them. When I did the scan, it
reading was incredibly good, even in the light my husband said was
glaring on the paper.

I have a Purl camera I am considering selling. It doesn't have much
use on it, and maybe I ought to sell OpenBook while I'm at it.
However, I don't know if I can. The state gave me OpenBook, but I
bought the Purl camera myself. I'll have to find out what I can do
about OpenBook.

Re: Mac feel natural

2011-11-23 Thread Paul Mimms
Most of us are more comfortable with what we have become familiar with
using, therefore what is easier. You may find you just need to stop
making the decision whether to use the MacBook or the PC and remove the

make it work for you just as you did with the PC at one time.

Re: Qwerty keyboard case for ipad 1

2011-05-27 Thread Paul Mimms
You might want to look at the ZaggMate from Zagg.com. The keyboaard does not
slide out but is stored beneath the iPad in a kind of clamshell configuration
that allows the Ipad and keyboard to protect each other. The keyboard is built
into the ZaggMate and the Ipad flips over and fits snugly on top of the
ZaggMate and its built-in bluetooth keyboard.

Re: iPad (3G/WiFi) vs iPhone/iPod Touch

2011-03-06 Thread Paul Mimms
Nothing makes the iPad essential to blind users, but it is a viable
alternative. Many say they like the situation of having all the apps
and functions on one device. that works fine until the phone rings, and
many times whatever ap you were working with is termainatted, and will
need to be restarted after hanging up the call.

I mean, we don't need to see the larger screen wich can be great for

So therefor we can get the same out of the iPhone or iPod Touch.
I don't know if I'm right or wrong in this, but I'd like to see a
constructive little discussion about why we blind should have an iPad
- or not?iThanks so much / nstead of something else?

Life is a challenge, and meeting the challenge is my life. Not everyone likes
working in the limited space presented by the iPhone screen. The iPad has a
better sounding speaker.

I like the larger real estate, and I use iPad with the Zaggmate, which is an
aluminum case in which the iPad stores and includes a built-in bluetooth
keyboard. It only adds .25 inch to the thickness of the iPad and about 7
ounces to the weight.

I don't know that there is anything that makes the iPad better than an iPod
touch or an iPhone, with the exception of the iPhone's ability to make phone
calls. for the user who likes phone service on Sprint, T-Mobile or other
carriers, iPod and iPad are alternative additions to an arsenal of portalbe
electronics. iPad is a better choice for the family/couple that shares a
device, particularly if one partner/member is sighted and would enjoy the
larger image.

Just like there are Fords, Chevies, and BMW's, there are different choices
among iDevices. What matters is what you choose to use to get from here to
there.

Re: macbook air vs ipad 2

2011-03-04 Thread Paul Mimms
Look into an app called USB disk that can work with iPad to export and
import files. That is assuming you need to access files for some reason
while you are away from home. You might also consider one of the eprint
printers that will print from iDevices and other mobile devices
wirelessly using Airplay. Of course, there is still Drop box, Evernote,
and the like that can be used for file sharing between an iPad and PC.

It is true that the camera kit for the iPad cannot be used for transfer
of data other than photos. As for compactness, the ZaggMate from
zagg.com is an aluminum case which combines a BT keyboard while adding
only .25 inch to the thickness of the iPad itself, and there are other
cases for iPad that include a BT keyboard
