I think NBP National Braille press has an updated book.

Go to nbp.org and check it out.

Hello Andy,

I just purchased a book by Janet Ingber from the National Braille Press. it is
called Mac Basics for the Beginning User. I really like it. I bought the
braille copy so I can read it while trying things on the computer. I’ve
learned a lot from this book. It will be a great reference tool for me. I
don’’t know if we are talking about the same book or not.

Hi all.

In the past I've purchased 2 great books. They may have been from either, the
National Braille Press or American Printhouse for the Blind. I can no longer
rember.

The first book concerned my Iphone and was titled:

Getting Started with the iPhoneGetting Started with the iPhone
An Introduction for Blind Users
By Anna Dresner and Dean Martineau.

This was a great book and helped me a lot, back when I was using my Iphone 4s.

I've since upgraded to the Iphone 6s and was wondering if there was a more
recent title by these two authours which would be more appropriate for the
Iphone 6s and subsequent upgrades to the operating system, since then.

My second book, which I'm studying at the moment is also a fantastic book. It
concerns My Imac and my Macbook pro and is titled:

Janet Ingber - Everything You Need to Know to Use the Mac

I'm loving this book so much that I hunger for more from this particular author.

If anyone knows a link where I can purchase such titles, as txt documents, I'd
be delighted to know.

Thanks.

Very best wishes.

Andy.

Hi,
I would check out Zoom meeting, also Jonathan Mosen has a course & information
about it at http://mosen.org http://twitter.com/jonathanmosen

You can download the intro to the course for free which covers attending
meeetings, and then there is a more extensive tutorial for a small cost on how
to fully use the tool as a content creator and presenter.

Best,
Mika

Hi:
Me too, have a guidedog that is a cross, and 2 long hair cats. Acording to the
review, they work great on dog hair. The 880. 890, 960, and 980 got the best
reviews in regards to dog hairs. The 690 did okay in the dog hair reviews. The
800 and 900 have different technology where the hair doesn't get caught in the
rollers. I just haven't decided on which to try. The 900 series have the
longest battery life.

Hi Rhonda, you can’t with out QOS and I’d argue your connection is to slow to
take much advantage of QOS anyway. One thing you might do is up your plan
depending on what DSL plan you’re on. They may have a faster plan with more
upload and download capacity but with DSL theres just not that much headroom.

I’m not sure geographically where you are but a wireless provider may
be a way to go. T-Mobile and Verizon both have very good networks and
unlimited plans with as much as 60 megabits up and 400 down, maybe more
depending where they are in their update cycle. Also depends where in the
world you’re located.

Hope that helps.

DSL is very limited in it’s upload speed assuming you’re using regular old ADSL
from AT At most you’re going to have a single megabit up or so and a few
down, more likely you have 128 or 384K up which is a very small up channel.

QOS or quality of service doesn’t change your speed, it prioritizes what
traffic uses the bandwidth that you have. You might for example tag video and
phone as most preferred because they are very time sensitive where as you might
tag web traffic as less preferred because you’d rather have your page load a
little more slowly if your on the phone so your call quality is preserved. You
only have what speeds you have available in your plan however.

Hope this helps clear things up.

upload speed very low

2017-07-09 Thread Rhonda Partain
Hello I have ATT DSL internet service am getting very low upload speeds
0.11 Mbps highest I've seen is 0.30 Mbp I was told routers have QOS
settings where you can set what gets priority. My router does not have qos
settings. I can't upgrade, no other providers where I live. Is there any
way to help maximize the upload speed? I work from home and this is
affecting my ability to do my job.
Thanks for any thoughts.

I have use VLC player to transcribe some audio. I needed to have the ability
to slow the speech down and this worked wonderfully.

Thanks. I was going to suggest that too, as I use VLC as my primary audio and
video player. I have not used the slow down feature much, though. But, have
used it and know it does slow down speech to an annoyingly slow speed.

No, Bootcamp was not installed in Windows, as I previously thought it needed to
be. This was not on a PC computer. This was, and is, on a Mac Book Air.

As for what I’m trying to do, I’m trying to switch reliably on the fly between
Mac and Windows, using VMWare Fusion 8.5 plus,, on my Mac Book Air with OS10
Sierra.

Subject: iPhone7 in hand, and great apple store experience!

Let me start by saying, apple stores are being restocked sooner than the
carriers. The reason I know this, is all carrier stores said they will fill
back orders first, and they might get more in the stores by mid october. If
you check the apple store app, select your carrier, color, and size it will
tell you what the ship time is, or if you can pick up in store. For the last 3
days I have been selecting all colors and sizes, at first it was just rose
gold. But yesterday afternoon, all colors and sizes said pickup in store
tomorrow. So I checked all morning when I got up, and when I got to apple
store, just 45 minutes before it opened, I was the first one to check in. The
crowd got larger by the minute, and I was afraid my reservation would get lost.
But the apple store rep who made my reservation, saw the crowd growing, and at
5 minutes to 10, when they opened, he came got me and said. “Your first. and
put me in the front of the line. Now that is the VIP treatment. So I got my
phone, went to a early lunch, and my phone is restoring from a backup as we
speak. Don’t like none of the cases in the apple store, so I grabbed an otter
box from T-Mobile on my way home. Great job apple!

Many of the gestures you know from the iPhone are the same: double tap to open,
flick left and right to go to previous and next item, flick up and down to move
through whatever the rotor is set to, etc. There are also gestures to do things
like interact, move to certain parts of the operating system, etc. Here's a
podcast, if you're in to that sort of thing, I did awhile back, which was 3
years ago, but all the info in it is still accurate.

Rhonda,

The track pa makes things very accessible

It is a mouse type device

And allows us with voiceover to use the trackpad in the same way we would use
the iPhone or iPad touch screan.

Including giving us a roter for finer working.

Installing a program does not place it on the dock, it's in your applications
folder. In the finder, press command shift a to open this folder, the
application should be there.

Check your applications folder, from finder press command+shift+A. once the app
is open you can pin it to the dock, find it in the doc with the program open,
and press vo+shift+M to access the context menu.

Hi again Simon.

Most of my problems are resolved my friend.

I was advised by another member to check out the National Braille Press of the
USA and in particular, for a text book titled:

Janet Ingber - Everything You Need to Know to Use the Mac

Anyway, I'm very pleased to say that I found that particular book and have
since downloaded it as a single text file to my Win 7 computer for $22.00.

That's very good value. There are almost 90 pages talking about all things
apple, in terms of the Mac. So that's me delighted and eager to start getting
into the chapters.

Thanks again Simon for your support. I was feeling a bit out on a limb befor I
wrote to the list.

Very best wishes.
Andy.

around the screen by hitting left or right arrow. Hit the Left and Right Arrow

There's also AppleVis (which I'm part of, on the Editorial Team, just for full
disclosure). We offer a set of podcasts, guides, and blogs that we think will
help new Mac users get started, which is linked to right on the homepage of
www.applevis.com. We don't charge for anything.

Another free resource is the free book "Mastering the Macintosh with VoiceOver"
on the iBook Store. Be sure to search for "Macintosh", not "Mac", or you won't
find it as I didn't at first.

That program scans in the cloud and recognizes in the cloud. And it costs more
than fine raider. If you don't mind relying on the Internet, I guess it's OK.
The learning curve is probably less. But I don't care for the whole cloud

I think one way to do it would be to connect a bluetooth or the bluetooth
adapter to the windows virtual image and then pair with that your windows
keyboard. Not sure the implications though if you are using bluetooth on the
Mac side other than you’ll probably lose that.

I do not know what happens if you pair windows keyboards directly with the Mac.
Suspect they work button sure how well.

Rhonda,
No, you can run either. For Bootcamp, when the system chime sounds off,
hold the right option key. As was said, there is no Voiceover on this screen.
So you must wait a bit, trial and error works here. I ran Bootcamp for sveral
months and it was always in the same slot on the stzrtup screen so I just
pressed right arrow once then enter on it.

does a mac need both VM Ware and bootcamp to run windows

2015-12-27 Thread Rhonda Partain
I am just wondering if both VM-Ware Fusion and Bootcamp are needed in order
to run Windows on a mac?
I have both on my system and have difficulty switching between windows and
the mac system; I do not see the bootcamp disc in the settings to select
which disc one wants to startup.
Thanks for any thoughts.

I have both programs. I can't see bootcamp in the startup options anymore.

No, you would usually use one or the other, and I would suggest vmware. It
allows you to install windows without sighted help, and also allows you to run
windows and the mac at the same time.

Hello Rhonda,

You ask an excellent question.

To my knowledge, there is no vibratory or auditory feedback to indicate that
the Mac is shutting down. By the same token, although this has been suggested
to Apple, time and time again, by me and others, there is also no feedback to
indicate when the display is locked, as there is on iPhone.

Mark
