Re: BARD App Available in App Store

Actually, you can add books to yur wish list from within the app in
the get books tab, then download them once they're added there. When
they're downloaded, they will appear in the bookshelf tab. I also love
the tone and speed adjustments.

Hey all,

password to login, most likely your user name is your email. To view your books
you will need to save them to your Wish List on your computer to view them and
download them on your iPhone. I have only played around with the app briefly,
but it seems fantastic so far. Thank you to Bard for finally releasing an
iPhone app for us to take our content anywhere.

Actually, although it takes some getting used to, I rather don't mind
the concept of interaction. It's most helpful in tool bars, where you

will allow full access in this way.

One of the things I'd like to see Apple do away with is the concept of
interaction. Yeah, I know that sounds strange, but, once you've paired an
Apple bluetooth keyboard with an Iphone, you will quickly come to the opinion
that it's actually faster not having to interact with stuff, and, in my view,
if Apple really wants universal across the board compatibility, they really do
need eventially to make a truly seemless experience. Part of that, I think,
means they will have to do away with interaction and this alone would help a
good deal.

But this, I sussepct, belongs under its own thread.

Re: Mbraille new Braille keyboard iPhone app

2013-06-26 Thread shane christenson
Not sure if this is the case with the new m braille, but when I tried to use
braille touch, and when I'd try to do the letter N, the app would come up with
either a Z or a the sign, so it seemed a little backwards, so I gave up on it.
If there's a way to fix this, I'd sure like to know it. Thanks.

Well this app will run BrailleTouch for their money.
It is another one of these Braille keyboard apps, with some unique features,

unique feature is tutorial mode, so you can get used to how the keyboard is
laid out before actually entering text.
One not so quite unique feature, as this is also available in TypeInBraille,
 is editing capability.
Here is the link in the Uk app store if interested.

Re: i phone discussion

2013-06-26 Thread shane christenson
Hi everyone. From the point of view of someone who's a gadget freak,
admittedly, the whole touch screen idea was a little weird to me, but I have a
good friend who had 1 of the first ipod touches with voice-over, and he let me
play with it for about 10 minutes, and he showed me how to use thje most common
gestures, so, when I got my iPhone, I didn't go in blindly, (no pun intended).
Another thing that was a big help, was the salesman at the apple store where I
got the phone, who spent 3 hours with me, patiently showing me skads of
different things, and if he didn't know something, he looked it up, and we
learned together. Ever since then, i've been like a kid in a candy store. Just
my 2 cents, and btw, this is coming from a guy who used to be a very loyal
mobile speak user from 2005 until 2010.

I purchased my i phone in mid April but did not change my mobile provider
until early May. I did this so that I could become used to how the i phone
functioned and using the touch screen before vital transactions depended on
my ability to use the phone. I am very glad I did this.

Another thing that has helped is a screen protector with raised dots sold by
Speed Dots. I know there are some who assert this should not be necessary
however, I believe we should use what makes sense for us as individuals. I
find that it provides landmarks for orientation on the screen.

I have been told that one must have access to the internet in order for siri
to work. Perhaps someone on the list can confirm this? If this is the case,
then utilizing siri for making calls etc would work as long as an internet
connection is available. This might not be a problem for many but for me, it
is necessary that I know how to manage without siri as well as with it.

I have gotten pretty good at using my i phone and while I still find making
calls involving many number sequences problematic at times, it is offset by
the other things the i phone does well. I don't know how to input menu
sequences such as those described by someone earlier. Perhaps you could give
us the steps to do this?

Finally, as a new user I am happy to answer any questions about the learning
curve, at least from my perspective.

Hi Tim. The system preferences was what I was after, although I did check the
dock as you suggested, nothing there that needed to be changed. Thanks.

 Hi,

In addition to the System Preferences option, one of two things is likely
 happening here:

 1. Press VO-d to get to your Dock, press VO-shift-m to bring up the
Contextual menu, down to Options then over to check status. One of the
options there is Open at Login. If VO says that it is checked then simply
press return on it and it will toggle off. If it is not checked, then press
 Escape.

 2. The MacOS operates different than what many are used to in the Windows
world. When you close the last window in an app in Windows, it usually
closes/quits the application as well. In the MacOS, this is not the case.
Closing windows simply does what it says, closes open windows. You must Quit
the app to remove it from memory. So, when you press cmd-w to close a window
in TextEdit, the window closes but the app remains open and if you navigate
to another app TextEdit is out of your mind but still active within the Mac's
mind. As well, when you go to Shutdown or Restart your computer, normally a
dialog will appear. One of the items in that dialog is a checkbox that asks
you if you want to re-open windows when you log back in. If that is checked
and you've left applications or windows open, they will open again upon
 startup.

There are two part. First, you need to get Terminal itself running. Terminal

hitting Command-Option-U and typing T should jump you to terminal (unless you

 command-O to open it.

The second part is to install Mac Ports. Instructions are here:

 http://www.macports.org/install.php

You'll need to install Apple's xcode first and then you can install Macports.

With Macports installed you can now choose from a huge number of available
unix packages which have been ported to the Mac. I set mine up ages ago so I
don't recall the exact setup but I don't think required much more than
downloading the installer for my flavor of OSX and running that. Then I can
do the rest from terminal. First I usually do a

 sudo port selfupdate

which updates it's internal database of available ports and versions. Then I
 do

 sudo port upgrade outdated

which grabs any updates for anything I have installed in macports. To install
something like sox I would do

 sudo port install sox

which will fetch and install sox along with any other things sox depends on.

 Hi,

You're on the right track. When in the Get Info window, make sure you're on
the Summary tab. Navigate right, the first item after the tabs should be
the Title of the mp3 file, the next item is the one you want. It will start
by saying the Kind of file that it is, mp3, AAC and so on. The Bit Rate and
more will be announced there as well.

questions about my new ipod fifth generation, and audible books

a couple of cd/dvd questions

2013-05-30 Thread shane christenson
Hi folks. I'm considering buying an external fire wire or u s b cd/dvd/blu ray
reader/writer for my mac mini. I would prefer something I don't have to plug
into electricity, but if it has to have wall power, that's not by any means a
deal breaker. I don't care if it doesn't write to blu ray disks, but I have
several blu ray disks I'd like to watch on my new machine. Any and all
recommendations will be greatly appreciated and considered.
My second question is, if I have a dvd or blu ray disk I want to extract just
the audio tracks from, specifically if the disk has a descriptive audio track,
is there Mac software out there that will do this? I've heard of HandBrake,
but, unless I'm wrong about this, it handles audio and video. If it will handle
audio only, and allow for the extraction of the d v s track, and if it is
VO-accessible, I'll sure give it a try. Thanks for your help on any of this.

Hi, listers. For those of you who enjoy reading newspapers, here's a great

don't know about anywhere else. It gives you access to over 250 local and
national newspapers, and speaks in 5 different male and female voices. The
app itself is free, but you can subscribe to the earl service for $9.99 a

non-subscription version, you can only read 3 articles a day. This beats any
other newspaper app I've ever seen for the Idevices. I think the subscription

Its for IOS. I just downloaded it and it has alot of possibilities. Its like
using a phone menu system to dial in on a given newspaper article. You can
choose between three different newspapers in the free unsubscribed version ,
then individual news sections like world news, local, late breaking etc,
then the various articles in the section. You use words like back, reread,
etc to traverse the menu system. Then once you select an article, it is read
aloud with a very good voice quality.
 I like it.

If you have a line-in jack on the back of your mac, it's possible, that it
might also serve as a microphone jack. You might try it and see.

Re: Can anyone recommend a scanner for scanning books.

2013-05-14 Thread shane christenson
Hi, Annie and others. I should point out here, that with a camera scanner, the
camera just snaps a picture of the page(s), so if you have say a 200-page book,
you can snap a book in about 10 minutes or so. Just a thought.

 Hi Annie,

Just one thing to think about. If you scan a lot of books, I would get a
fast scanner with a good document feeder. this means you'll have to remove
the binding from the book, but you can then put it in the scanner and walk
away. With the hover cam, you would have to stand there and turn the pages,
which can chew up a lot of time. I'm not sure of a specific brand to
recommend, I've always liked Fujitsu scanners, but I don't think they work
on the Mac. I have an Epson GTs-450 that I like a lot, but it has the
drawback that it only has a document feeder, so you don't have a flatbed to
use if you don't want or can't chop a book.

 Just something to think about.

Re: Good speakers for mac mini

2013-04-26 Thread shane christenson
The audio jacks are located on the very back bottom panel of the mac mini. I
believe from what I've read, the jacks are capable of accepting optical cables,
provided they have the correct tips to correspond with the jacks. The left most
jack, if you're looking at the mac mini, reaching around to the back, are,
going from left to right, audio out, then audio in. They are located below the
SD card slot. HTH

Just an FYI, if you really are doing a 5.1 surround sound setup you can
run the optical output from your mini to a standard 5.1 decoder receiver
so when you play a DVD you get all the surround-sound goodness. Other
than that, what speakers sound good is a pretty subjective thing.
Personally I like my old JBL 4408 studio monitors.

 Hi all,

PC speakers, a 5.1 set that hadn't worked properly in years, went
kaput. After grieving the loss for months (not really,) I think I'm
finally ready to move on and get a nice set of speakers.

Now I throw it to you for any recommendations you may have. I do have
 a certain criteria though:

 - I listen to music... a lot. I want it to sound good coming out of
 these things.
 - I will most likely be setting this up to watch DVDs since, when I
move out eventually, we'll be hooking up a TV as a display with HDMI.
We're getting a futon so our office will double as a movie room.
 - I'm moving into an apartment building and don't want something too
bass heavy because of that. I don't think the neighbours would
 appreciate it. ;)
 - The less space it takes up, the better. I am not opposed to 5.1 but
don't want huge speakers since we'll have other stuff taking up space.
 - I don't want to spend tons of money on these. $500 is my absolute
limit but I'd like to keep it quite a bit lower than that if possible.
 - I'm in Canada... any links provided would be even more useful if
 they're from Canadian sites.
 - I want something easy to set up on the mac mini... I don't want to
mess with a bunch of adapters.

 I think that's about it. There's a couple of two-speaker sets from
Bosse on the apple store but reviews are so varied that it leaves me
unsure. Many say that it has tons of bass too so I am reluctant to put
out the cash for one of those. I have had a hard time finding other
options though so I am hoping some of you may have recommendations
and/or experience that could help me make a decision.

Either way, thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer!
