Re: BARD App Available in App Store
Actually, you can add books to yur wish list from within the app in the get books tab, then download them once they're added there. When they're downloaded, they will appear in the bookshelf tab. I also love the tone and speed adjustments. To view your books you will need to save them to your Wish List on your computer to view them and download them on your iPhone. Re: What I think Apple needs to change: was: Re: best way to navigate Mail when Quick Nav is on?
Actually, although it takes some getting used to, I rather don't mind the concept of interaction. It's most helpful in tool bars, where you can access all of the buttons and other controls confined within that particular area. I have yet to find a windows-based screen reader that will allow full access in this way. Shane On 7/30/2013 3:44 PM, Ray Foret jr wrote: Ah, I was beginning to think I might just have to do that. To speak frankly, I think it's high time Apple made the Mac OS function more like the Iphone IOS. One of the things I'd like to see Apple do away with is the concept of interaction. Yeah, I know that sounds strange, but, once you've paired an Apple bluetooth keyboard with an Iphone, you will quickly come to the opinion that it's actually faster not having to interact with stuff, and, in my view, if Apple really wants universal across the board compatibility, they really do need eventially to make a truly seemless experience. Part of that, I think, means they will have to do away with interaction and this alone would help a good deal. But this, I sussepct, belongs under its own thread. Re: i phone discussion
Hi everyone. From the point of view of someone who's a gadget freak, admittedly, the whole touch screen idea was a little weird to me, but I have a good friend who had 1 of the first ipod touches with voice-over, and he let me play with it for about 10 minutes, and he showed me how to use thje most common gestures, so, when I got my iPhone, I didn't go in blindly, (no pun intended). Another thing that was a big help, was the salesman at the apple store where I got the phone, who spent 3 hours with me, patiently showing me skads of different things, and if he didn't know something, he looked it up, and we learned together. Ever since then, i've been like a kid in a candy store. Just my 2 cents, and btw, this is coming from a guy who used to be a very loyal mobile speak user from 2005 until 2010. Shane On Jun 26, 2013, at 5:01 PM, jean parker radiofore...@gmail.com wrote: Karen and all: For the possible benefit of anyone thinking about switching to the i phone, I am happy to explain my experience. I purchased my i phone in mid April but did not change my mobile provider until early May. I did this so that I could become used to how the i phone functioned and using the touch screen before vital transactions depended on my ability to use the phone. I am very glad I did this. Another thing that has helped is a screen protector with raised dots sold by Speed Dots. I know there are some who assert this should not be necessary however, I believe we should use what makes sense for us as individuals. I find that it provides landmarks for orientation on the screen. I have been told that one must have access to the internet in order for siri to work. Perhaps someone on the list can confirm this? If this is the case, then utilizing siri for making calls etc would work as long as an internet connection is available. This might not be a problem for many but for me, it is necessary that I know how to manage without siri as well as with it. I have gotten pretty good at using my i phone and while I still find making calls involving many number sequences problematic at times, it is offset by the other things the i phone does well. I don't know how to input menu sequences such as those described by someone earlier. Perhaps you could give us the steps to do this? Finally, as a new user I am happy to answer any questions about the learning curve, at least from my perspective. Hi Tim. The system preferences was what I was after, although I did check the dock as you suggested, nothing there that needed to be changed. Thanks. If VO says that it is checked then simply press return on it and it will toggle off. If it is not checked, then press Escape. 2. The MacOS operates different than what many are used to in the Windows world. When you close the last window in an app in Windows, it usually closes/quits the application as well. In the MacOS, this is not the case. Closing windows simply does what it says, closes open windows. You must Quit the app to remove it from memory. So, when you press cmd-w to close a window in TextEdit, the window closes but the app remains open and if you navigate to another app TextEdit is out of your mind but still active within the Mac's mind. As well, when you go to Shutdown or Restart your computer, normally a dialog will appear. One of the items in that dialog is a checkbox that asks you if you want to re-open windows when you log back in. If that is checked and you've left applications or windows open, they will open again upon startup. HTH. Later... Re: finding the bit rate of an mp3 file on the mac
Hi Chris. I did everything you suggested in getting Xcode and macports, and got them installed The only thing i did differently, was install x ports, with is supposed to be the new x11. When I tried to do the sudo port upgrade outdated I got some sort of error message I can't remember right now. When I did the self update, everything seemed to go smoothly. Any ideas? Thanks again. Shane On Jun 24, 2013, at 3:28 PM, Chris Blouch cblo...@aol.com wrote: There are two part. First, you need to get Terminal itself running. Terminal is in your utilities folder which you can get to quickly from the Finder by hitting Command-Option-U and typing T should jump you to terminal (unless you have a bunch of utilities that all start with T). Then you can just hit command-O to open it. The second part is to install Mac Ports. Instructions are here: http://www.macports.org/install.php You'll need to install Apple's xcode first and then you can install Macports. With Macports installed you can now choose from a huge number of available unix packages which have been ported to the Mac. I set mine up ages ago so I don't recall the exact setup but I don't think required much more than downloading the installer for my flavor of OSX and running that. Then I can do the rest from terminal. First I usually do a sudo port selfupdate which updates it's internal database of available ports and versions. Then I do sudo port upgrade outdated which grabs any updates for anything I have installed in macports. To install something like sox I would do sudo port install sox which will fetch and install sox along with any other things sox depends on. They need in the Westheimer store in Houston Apple store once a month. They also have a conference call once a month on Monday nights. They said they had people from out of the country to call, I guess using Skype. If you want to know more about it, you can go to ibugtoday.com And check it out. questions about my new ipod fifth generation, and audible books
Hi listers. I just recently purchased a fifth generation IPod, and I love it, except for 1 peculiarity that I don't know how to get around. When I type something on its keyboard, it seems to be scruntched down toward the bottom of the screen, but once I start typing, the keyboard seems to expand itself. Is there a way for it to stay expanded at all times? Second, I have some audible books I'd like to make mp3 files out of. Is there a way to do this on the Mac? Thanks for any help. a couple of cd/dvd questions
Hi folks. I'm considering buying an external fire wire or u s b cd/dvd/blu ray reader/writer for my mac mini. I would prefer something I don't have to plug into electricity, but if it has to have wall power, that's not by any means a deal breaker. I don't care if it doesn't write to blu ray disks, but I have several blu ray disks I'd like to watch on my new machine. Any and all recommendations will be greatly appreciated and considered. My second question is, if I have a dvd or blu ray disk I want to extract just the audio tracks from, specifically if the disk has a descriptive audio track, is there Mac software out there that will do this? I've heard of HandBrake, but, unless I'm wrong about this, it handles audio and video. If it will handle audio only, and allow for the extraction of the d v s track, and if it is VO-accessible, I'll sure give it a try. Thanks for your help on any of this. I want it to sound good coming out of these things. - I will most likely be setting this up to watch DVDs since, when I move out eventually, we'll be hooking up a TV as a display with HDMI. We're getting a futon so our office will double as a movie room. - I'm moving into an apartment building and don't want something too bass heavy because of that. I don't think the neighbours would appreciate it. ;) - The less space it takes up, the better. I am not opposed to 5.1 but don't want huge speakers since we'll have other stuff taking up space. - I don't want to spend tons of money on these. $500 is my absolute limit but I'd like to keep it quite a bit lower than that if possible. - I'm in Canada... any links provided would be even more useful if they're from Canadian sites. - I want something easy to set up on the mac mini... I don't want to mess with a bunch of adapters. I think that's about it. There's a couple of two-speaker sets from Bosse on the apple store but reviews are so varied that it leaves me unsure. Many say that it has tons of bass too so I am reluctant to put out the cash for one of those. I have had a hard time finding other options though so I am hoping some of you may have recommendations and/or experience that could help me make a decision. Either way, thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer! -Marc -- ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. tricking the mac mini into thinking it has a display
Hi listers. Someone mentioned some sort of adaptor that you could use on the mac mini to trick it into thinking it had a display when it actually didn't. What was this adaptor if anyone remembers, and where might I get it? Any help is welcomed. Thanks in advance. For some strange reason, when I try to control my apple tv with its remote, the remote wants to also control certain aspects of my mac.
