Re my mp3 from mp4 question: Extract audio from video Directly in Mac OS X Lion

2013-06-25 Thread Danny Noonan
Well, after asking the list how to extract audio from mp4 video files I slapped
myself for only looking for an app solution and looked closer to home and what
do you know, ML can do the job for me. I followed the below instructions but
did a batch conversion which worked exactly the same even though the
instructions only mention single file conversion. Hope this helps anyone
wanting to do what I wanted to do.

Many thanks.
Danny.

Extract Audio from Video Directly in Mac OS X Lion

Part 1: Extract M4A audio from video in MPG, M4V, MP4 and MOV (Mountain Lion
included)
If you own Mac OS X Mountain Lion, you will find that it is easy to process Mac
audio extraction. This latest Mac system comes with the ability allowing you to
extract audio from video. The Finder on it has the new built-in feature of
media encoding, which enables you to do the extraction simply. However, it does
not mean that you are able to extract audio from every video file. You only can
extract audio from video in MP4, MPG, M4V and MOV format. And the audio
extracted from video only can be saved in M4A files with 256kbps.
Directly convert video to audio track on your Mac OS X Mountain Lion:

Right click the video icon you would like to convert;
In the pop-up menu, click Encode Selected Video Files option at the bottom;

Then you will go to the Encode Media window. In Setting tab, select Audio
Only option;

Do not click the Same as source file option and set a destination to save the
output audio. Last, Click Continue to start to extract audio from video;
After that, you will get the M4A audio in a short time. The output audio file
will come with the same name as the original one. You can double click the
audio to open it by iTunes.

If you didn’t see the Encode options, you can

Head to the Apple menu and go to System Preferences;

Click Keyboard;

Go to the Keyboard Shortcuts tab;
Choose Services on the left sidebar and check“Encode Selected Audio Files” and
“Encode Selected Video Files”

Well it does not take a whole lot to be able to test... You need to have a
machine that you can live with if it does not work, and you need to register
as an Apple developer. I believe indivduals can become developers for $100.
Check the Apple developers web site for more details.

Also of interest, Tidbits says that the Lion Preview is installed via the
Appstore.

Fwd: Top 10 Secret Features in Mac OS X Lion

2011-07-23 Thread Dan Roy

Begin forwarded message:

 By Adam Dachis
Top 10 Secret Features in Mac OS X Lion

Lion's out and there's a lot of new stuff to explore. Apple tells you about
most of it on their web site, but there are still some secret features you'll
want to know about. Here's a look at our top 10 favorites.

 10. Add New, High-Quality Text-to-Speech Voices

Over the years, Apple's been working incrementally to improve the quality of
the text-to-speech voices offered with its operating system. For awhile we
just had Alex, the only somewhat natural-sounding computer voice in the
collection. While that hasn't changed much, as far as the defaults go, you
can add a bunch of new voices directly from OS X's VoiceOver Utility (in Hard
Drive - Applications - Utilities). Just click the Speech pane and then
select Customize from the voice selection menu. This will let you choose
from all the options—including a lot of the fun novelty voices you might have
 thought went missing.

 9. Look Up a Word in the Dictionary with Two Taps

Lion comes with a lot of new multitouch gestures, and hidden in the new set
is the ability to look up a word with two taps. All you have to do is place
your cursor over a word you want to look up, then tap the word twice with
three fingers. This will highlight it in yellow and show you a heads up
display with the word's definition. Of course, you'll need to turn this on in
System Preferences - Trackpad - Point Click first.

 8. Create Search Tokens When Searching for Files

You'll find this functionality throughout applications in Lion, but it's
especially useful when looking for files in the Finder. Basically, when
searching you type in something like Text and are given some options in a
drop-down menu. You might be looking for a file with Text in the file name
or just a file that is made up of text. You can choose which one from this
menu and it'll create a search token. Once a token is created, you'll start
to get results. You can keep creating more and more tokens this way to refine
your search, however, making it really easy to quickly locate the file (or
 files) you're looking for.

 7. Group a Bunch of Items into a Folder

The Finder has a handy new trick hidden in the contextual menu, and that's
the ability to select a bunch of files, right- or control-click them, and
choose New folder from X items. What this does is groups all the files
together and throws them in a new folder. Sure you could just make a new
folder and drag them all in, but this saves you a step. Want to do this with
a keyboard shortcut? Just press Command+Control+N.

 6. Add an Event to iCal by Typing a Phrase

Known as Quick Add, iCal now lets you just type a human-readable phrase to
add a new item to your calendar. To do this, just click the + button in iCal
and choose a calendar. You'll get a little pop up that'll let you enter
whatever you want. Type something like Movie this Friday at 7pm and iCal
will translate it into a new event.

Bonus iCal feature: Enter year view and you'll see a heat map over the
calendar. The warmer the color, the more you have going on that day.

 5. Share the Screen of an Inactive User

Screen sharing is great when you want to take control of whatever's currently
on the screen, but what happens when someone's logged in to another account
and you want to access yours remotely? Screen sharing now lets you share the
screen of any user, even when their account is running in the background.

Bonus Screen Sharing feature: If you want to allow people to share your
screen but you don't want to create a new account for them, you can just add
their Apple ID as an authorized user in the Screen Sharing section of the
 Sharing pane in System Preferences.

 4. Manage Privacy Settings for Any App

Lion now includes some privacy settings, letting you control which apps are
allowed to use your location and collect usage data. To access it, just go to
the top row in System Preferences and select Security Privacy. From there,
click the Privacy tab and you can make any changes you want.

 3. Automatically Restart When the Computer Freezes

Sometimes your computer freezes only to become unfrozen seconds later. Other
times you stare at the screen for several minutes, wondering if that's going
to happen, and then eventually restart when you're convinced you're wasting
your time. With resuming capabilities it isn't so awful if a freeze does take
place and requires a restart, but you no longer have to decide in Lion.
HIdden away in the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences is a little
checkbox called Restart automatically if the computer freezes. Check it and
you won't ever have to worry about it again.

 2. Fully Migrate from Windows to Mac OS X Automatically

If you're moving from a Windows PC to a Mac, Lion can help ease that
 transition

Pretty interesting. Thanks for that. I particularly like the word definition
one and the grouping items in a folder option.

Being a beta it may not be possible to install over an existing SL installation.

2011-02-28 Thread Scott Howell
I did not accuse you of anything at all. I merely made a statement and if you
feel as though I was accusing you of obtaining illegal software, that was not
my intent. There has been such conduct in the past, so merely making a
statement.
Understand it is unusual for a developer to ask such questions in this type of
forum in my opinion.

Re: Mac OS X Lion

2011-02-28 Thread Bryan Jones
Hey Mark, or should I call you Rip Van Winkle? grin

Apple has released a beta of OSX 10.7, also known as Lion.
You can get it by registering as an Apple Developer and paying US $99 for the
OSX dev tools.
If you're not already an Apple Developer, you can get started here:
http://developer.apple.com/programs/register/

Have fun!

2011-02-28 Thread Scott Howell
Mark,

Lion will not be out until sometime during the SUmmer. Apparently Oriol has
obtained a copy that he is attempting to install and having some difficulties.
A developer, there will be resources that will assist him in dealing with
installation problems. If you are a developer you can of course obtain a copy,
but there is a fee to become a developer.

Re: Mac OS X Lion

2011-02-27 Thread Keith Watson
Sara,

The reason your Mac slows down has nothing to do with the amount of ram that
you have in your system. It's the bottleneck in the IO system. You want to
increase your productivity, buy a SSD instead. This will increase your
throughput and make the same system appear to now scream.

Just my 2 cents.

Keith

Kevin I don't know what your worried about. Apple has always had beta testers
and will continue to have beta testers. THey are of course very careful in who
they choose considering the actions of at least one person in the past. Point
is Apple will not leave us hanging. You can be assured our community will be

difference if you bump it up to 2 or 4GB.

If your experiencing slow writes, get an SSD. If your utilising all of
your 4GB then perhaps an upgrade is in order, but SSD's decrease
bootup time and the time it takes to open apps amongst other things.

is very important, considering this is a major Mac OS X update. It
 needs
 to
be tested thoroughly. Based on polling Twitter, specific followers
 etc,
 I'm
not sure if there are any blind VoiceOver beta testers of Lion.

SSD is still pretty expensive. They have a 500 GB Mac SSD drive though for the
laptops. (might even have a larger by now)

The most SSD I've ever seen was the 4.5 petabytes of online SSD storage at
Dream Works.

Hi Carolyn,

lol,

um, I think he wonders? Let me try to clear it up a little. Today Apple
released a OSX 10.7 Lion developer preview. So Kevin was just wondering if we

Re: Mac OS X Lion

2011-02-24 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Well it does not take a whole lot to be able to test... You need to have a
machine that you can live with if it does not work, and you need to register as
an Apple developer. I believe indivduals can become developers for $100.
Check the Apple developers web site for more details.

Also of interest, Tidbits says that the Lion Preview is installed via the
Appstore.

I am unwilling to take my one working mac and install a beta OS on it. I don't
want to lose what I have now. I seriously need to find a used mac mini to do
this with. my old core 2 duo imac is getting a little long in the tooth for
this.
