Re: Migrating iTunes Library from PC to MacBook Air

Thanks to Jonathan and Grant for very helpful posts. Fortunately, I have
not changed the path of my iTunes library on my PC, so it's pretty likely
the copying will go smoothly.

2015-09-19 Thread Craig Werner
Thanks for the reassurance, Jonathan. I have never copied from machine to
machine before. Am I to assume that the Mac will honor the same folder
structure for my library as the PC does? I won’t clutter the list with more
thanks, but be assured I’ll read your response.

Re: Migrating iTunes Library from PC to MacBook Air

2015-09-19 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Craig, if you go into your Mac's system preferences, and choose sharing, the
nice thing is that your Mac clearly displays how to connect to it on your
networks. You should then be able to enter that address into the address bar of
Windows Explorer, prefaced by two backslashes. Once you log in, you should be
able to navigate to where you need to be and copy and paste as you need. You'll
need to make sure that the appropriate services are enabled under sharing as
well.
Alternatively, a good old thumb drive or external hard disk will do the trick
too.

Re: Migrating iTunes Library from PC to MacBook Air

2015-09-19 Thread Grant
Hi Craig,

As you may know, on a PC the iTunes library is typically stored in
c:\users\username\music\iTunes. You can force your library folder to be
somewhere else if you want, but that’s where it typically is. Inside that
folder, there’s a sub-folder called iTunes Media, which has subfolders like
audiobooks, music, and podcasts where your media is organized. On a Mac, iTunes
uses an identical structure; you can force the library folder to be somewhere
else if desired, but typically it’s under the music folder in your home
directory. So, copying the folder from the music folder on your PC to the music
folder on your Mac, then opening up iTunes on the Mac, should do the trick.
You’ll be presented with the same library you were using on your PC.

There are two exceptions, however. One is if you have changed the location of
the iTunes Media folder, though this is unlikely unless you specifically
remember doing so. You can check this in iTunes on your PC by opening the edit
menu, choosing preferences, then looking under the advanced tab. If you’ve
moved your iTunes Media folder, you can move it back to its usual location
before doing the copy. The other exception is if you’ve stored some media
outside of your iTunes Media folder. That media won’t be copied. To make sure
this isn’t a problem, before you copy the folder, open iTunes on your PC, open
the file menu, choose the library submenu, then choose “organize library”. If
necessary, you’ll be given the option to organize your library so that
everything’s contained within the iTunes Media folder.

With all that out of the way, you can copy the folder normally, such as using
the method Jonathan described.

Keep us posted if you have further questions. That’s what the list is for!

Cheers,

Grant

Migrating iTunes Library from PC to MacBook Air

2015-09-18 Thread Craig Werner
Greetings to the list.

Presently,my iTunes library lives on my iPhone 5 and my Windows 7 PC. I would
like to put the library on my new MacBook Air. I’m under the impression that
the Windows Migration Assistant is the best way to transfer the library. If I
use this approach, is the software accessible with a Windows screen reader?
Are there other methods of which I should be aware?

Thanks for all help.
