Re: Moving Quickly from Cells Populated w/ Data in Numbers

2019-09-01 Thread Dave Carlson
Nicholas,
Very interesting, indeed, and I’m surprised to realize that I understand the
concept of what you suggest. I create my own spreadsheets with data that I
collect from Credit Cards, Banks, etc. and after accumulating a year’s worth of
data, I start the arduous task of assigning a relevant category to each
transaction.
This is all for doing my taxes, which so far I can still benefit from itemized
deductions.
So of course I do a lot of sorting on columns, and after assigning categories,
do a final sort and then do a sum of values for each of the categories.
So with your idea of filters, how would I insert a cell entry if I’ve skipped
over it due to the filters? Do I need to first work without any filters, until
I’ve finished editing, and then use the filters to quickly move to cells with
meaningful data?
Hope this makes sense.

Re: Moving Quickly from Cells Populated w/ Data in Numbers

2019-09-01 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I use Numbers heavily and I do not know of any command like the one you seek,
but I may have a work around.

But, given the differences between Numbers and Excel, such a command should
not be needed with Numbers on the Mac.

As you probably know, each sheet with Excel is a giant never-ending grid.
Sighted people enter data in arbitrary locations to make the layout more
visually appealing. For instance, the first few rows and columns may be left
blank to provide a margin, and different kinds of data may be grouped together
in different places on the grid. This makes navigating with a screen reader
difficult as, when you come to a blank row, you don’t know whether there is
more data if you scroll down or not. So without the commands you speak of, you
could be left hitting the down arrow indefinitely just in case the next row had
data.

But in Numbers, each sheet can hold multiple table objects. Each table object
can be visually arranged anywhere on the blank sheet canvas. So there is no
need for a table object to have blank rows or columns to create space; instead,
the table objects can be positioned to leave space between them. Moreover, each
table object can have designated header rows and header columns so again no
need to leave blank rows to separate data rows from header rows. And each table
object should contain only related data, with different unrelated data being
placed into its own table object. That way again it’s not necessary to use
blank rows/columns to separate and group data; you can use separate table
objects to do so. Navigating table objects with VoiceOver in Numbers is easy,
so I find this method much more accessible for screen reader users.

Now, with that said, if you wanted to ignore blank cells in a table, you could
use the filter options to filter the table to show only cells that are not
blank, or that have values greater than 0, for instance. There are a number of
ways to do that but one way is to select the organise radio button from the
toolbar, then navigate to the table you’re interested in, then use VO-j to jump
to the format inspector, then select the filter tab/radio button, and then
interact with the scroll area and add a filter. Once the filter is set, you can
then navigate within the table using only the arrow keys to navigate only the
displayed cells. If you use VO + arrow keys you will navigate to all cells
regardless of whether they are displayed or hidden (i.e. ignoring the filter
rules). If you do that (navigate with the VO keys), and you end up on a hidden
cell, then the arrow keys probably won’t work until you navigate back to a
displayed cell using the VO + arrow keys.

Simon,
Yes, I know I need to find other ways, but I used that set of commands a lot
with JAWS to speed up the whole process of navigating, as well as
copying/pasting large amounts of data. Tax time is approaching, and I need to
start looking at all the data from our bank accounts and organize the
transactions into the various types for itemized deductions.
More on Taxes in a separate message, btw.

This might be a feature worth looking into for totaling expenses. I was just
looking at the Organize menu and saw this feature. I only use numbers in a very
basic way.

Group rows into categories to organize and summarize the table. dimmed

what I've learnt to do is to forget jaws commands as they forf me get in the

I believe with aple scripts this type of thing can be done but I'm not one that
is in to writing scripts.

Okay,
I may continue to exhaust all your patience w/r Numbers and my addiction to
spreadsheets. Appreciate the tips on making it the default, and how to assign
header and column titles. So far, so good.
Now a very nice tool in JAWS was the keystroke to quickly run along any row or
column, skipping over all the blanks and stopping at the next one with data. Do
these keystrokes exist, or is it possible to create activities (like scripts)
to do that?

Re: Moving Quickly from Cells Populated w/ Data in Numbers

2019-08-29 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Well, I don’t know a VoiceOver shortcut for this, but in AppleScript there are
table objects and row/column objects.
A cell object knows its row and column in the table, and can have a value of
“missing value”. I didn’t look at the row/column objects to see how easily it
is to review / select a specific cell via AppleScript.
The item chooser in VoiceOver can be quite useful in numbers when you need
direct access to a cell that you don’t know where it is.

HTH a little,
Jonathan
