RE: How to move data from a notetaker that uses slowly season to function to my MacBook Pro and how to secure this data because it is sensitive.

2021-07-18 Thread skipper8218
Yes, I set up virtual machines a long time ago through VMWare.
I used some tools to create image backups of my computers so just tried to
compare file encryption to those processes.
I just find it easier to backup sensitive data to external hard drives.

Well, an encrypted disk image is exactly that. It behaves exactly like a real
disk in all aspects, save one: it’s a file with a filesystem inside it. Now, a
VM is entirely different. We are talking about a virtual machine environment
here. It will have a CPU, video, and all the other devices of a traditional
machine, only emulated in software. And yeah, a VM can use virtual disks (as
described here). So, that is the difference: one is a virtual machine complete
with all the parts, and the other is a filesystem inside a container file.

Ah yes, the Cold War model called “Defense in depth”. Btw, you can also format
a USB stick as an encrypted filesystem (you would have to go into the advanced
features on Disk Utility to do this) or you can create an encrypted disk image
and then write that as a file to the USB stick, then you can open it like
another drive. I do that a lot here.

Re: How to move data from a notetaker that uses slowly season to function to my MacBook Pro and how to secure this data because it is sensitive.

2021-07-18 Thread Eric Oyen
Ah yes, the Cold War model called “Defense in depth”. Btw, you can also format
a USB stick as an encrypted filesystem (you would have to go into the advanced
features on Disk Utility to do this) or you can create an encrypted disk image
and then write that as a file to the USB stick, then you can open it like
another drive. I do that a lot here.

Re: How to move data from a notetaker that uses slowly season to function to my MacBook Pro and how to secure this data because it is sensitive.

2021-07-18 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
I would also recommend GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) for encrypting sensitive
personal information. In addition, enabling Fire Vault would be a good
idea, if you haven't done so already. This encrypts all of your data
files, just in case you accidentally write sensitive information to a
file that is not otherwise encrypted.

If you don’t want to go through the hassles of installing the macports, you can
order (for relatively cheap) GPG Tools. It can also act to encrypt files,
emails and even sign apps that you can later verify. I have it here and I use
it for encrypted emails and digitally signing electronic documents.

I've read positive reports about ABBYY FineReader for Mac, but I haven't used
it personally. They have apparently rewritten the user interface and have
released (or are soon to release) a new version.

You can install macports and then install a package called GPG (Gnu Privacy
Guard). You can then encrypt your data after creating both a public and private
key. Then store it on a USB device with a braille tag attached to let you know
what it is.

If you don’t want to go through the hassles of installing the macports, you can
order (for relatively cheap) GPG Tools. It can also act to encrypt files,
