Yes, I set up virtual machines a long time ago through VMWare. I used some tools to create image backups of my computers so just tried to compare file encryption to those processes. Well, an encrypted disk image is exactly that. It behaves exactly like a real disk in all aspects, save one: it’s a file with a filesystem inside it. Now, a VM is entirely different. Actually, Not sure about ICloud, but you can create something akin to it. You create an encrypted disk image locally, then open it after resenting your credentials. Then copy any files to it that you want. Once that is done, close and unmount the disk image and then upload it to iCloud as a file. Once there, if you have file level access to your iCloud account, you can open it as a local virtual disk and (sound trumpets here), TADA! In theory, this should work. Btw, you can also format a USB stick as an encrypted filesystem (you would have to go into the advanced features on Disk Utility to do this) or you can create an encrypted disk image and then write that as a file to the USB stick, then you can open it like another drive. I would also recommend GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) for encrypting sensitive personal information. In addition, enabling Fire Vault would be a good idea, if you haven't done so already. This encrypts all of your data files, just in case you accidentally write sensitive information to a file that is not otherwise encrypted.
