Re: Dictation and accessability

2018-01-14 Thread Eric Caron
Hi donna,

All good, thanks for letting me know. I used that command in the
distant past with older Mac OS. I think this is working pretty well over all
and I’m looking forward to fine tuning it.

the tips from this thread are very helpful.

Re: Dictation and accessability

2018-01-14 Thread Eric Caron
Hi All,

This is really a lot of fun. I’m focussing on the ways the computer
will follow commands I ask it. I just created a command to start a new email
and it works great.

One glitch I’m noticing. When I do something like say “computer, start Siri.”
it actually starts repeating the last text I dictated using actual dictation in
a word processor or in a email body. Is this happening to any others? Is
there a fix?

example,

I dictate a email and then later on I start Siri and it starts repeating my
last dictated email.

I do wonder what the Safari "Make this speakable" command is actually doing.

Eric,

I was speaking of the automator app that has been discussed on this list a
little. Automator is a application that allows one to drag a set of fairly
standard sequences into an order and have them be performed. It is supposed to
be the common man's answer to AppleScript. So you can easily add grab selection
of photographs and attach to a new e-mail. Automator has had a Save as
dictation command as one of the options for a couple of years now.

I am also appending the URL for how to actually have an AppleScript be used as
a speakable item. This guide says to save them in the Speakable Items area of
your Library and not in the Scripts folder. So, this information supersedes my
last e-mail.

Hi donna,

saying” computer, what time is it.” doesn’t do anything on my computer
and I don’t see that as a command. Did you set that up on your own? Siri
works but is more awkward.

The more I play with this and learn commands the more enjoyable it is. I like
keeping my hands on the computer home keys and this is great for things like
switching between applications or opening and closing applications.

I”m making progress on navigating mail mostly with voice and it is a fun
challenge.
So did you set this time command up yourself? and related question, there is a
“send that command” I was hoping to use that for mail but it doesn’t seem to do
anything. Does that work for you or anyone else?

Thanks,

Eric Caron

Re: Dictation and accessability

2018-01-14 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

Trying some fancy Apple Mail formatting here… So might need to resend without
that.
Find /Library/Scripts/VoiceOver (command-shift-G in Finder is your friend
here).
Find the Get Time of day script.
Copy this to your home library Scripts folder.
Save a copy as a runnable script.
Add a custom open item to dictation and point to the runnable Apple Script.
I am not quite sure about step 4 though I have done it in the past.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Hi Jonathan, I’m just getting started but if you can assign a key stroke like
command s to something it looks like you can assign that in the dictation area
in accessibility in system preferences. that should give you the functionality.

Glad to hear you got it working. I personally don't use dictation much I just
have learned to think through my fingers. My code to switch sound devices could
be very cool if it was set up as a speech item. Did you see any of the
instructions to add automator actions to speech?

Re: Dictation and accessability

2018-01-13 Thread Eric Caron
OK,

I got it working again.

I went to accessibility and dictation. I first went to the commands
table and unchecked and rechecked each item and . that seemed to give me back
most functions. I tried to check the advanced button in this area but it
didn’t seemed to stay checked. finally using the space bar seemed to check it
and I hit done and now things seemed to work as before.

I’m enjoying being able to say, computer, “ go to beginning” or “select all.”
And it just works.

Now I’m off to see if I can follow some directions I found to set up a way to
get Siri to work from a voice command on my Mac, similar to Hey Siri on my
phone.

has anyone out there accomplished that yet?

Re: Dictation and accessability

2018-01-13 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Jonathan,

the press FN key twice is working for text dictation for me. It
doesn’t work for the commands I was using with the computer keywords like
“select all” or go to beginning.

I keep thinking it must be something I have done to mess this up as it
used to work nicely. Now it acts like it isn’t on. yet I think I’ve turned
everything on.

thanks for the suggestion it will keep me searching.

Look at the dictation area of the Keyboard system preferences. I generally
prefer using the hit Fn button twice to associating with a keyword. I have
found otherwise sometimes Voiceover causes dictation to start.

All the commands listed in the Accessibility area should still be available.
