Stopping GMAIL archiving
Hello, Many thanks for the attached. All is now working. The key is to specify that the trash folder should be on the server. It was previously on my iMac as I thought that would avoid filling up the server with old messages. However I should have realised that I needed to store the trash on the server so that GMAIL knows that it is trash and that it can be deleted. Now that the trash folder is on the server deleting its contents from my iMac tells GMAIL to delete this data. So I can now use Apple Mail on my iMac to select all the messages in the archive folder and then press the delete key to delete them. This moves them all to the trash folder. I can then go to the mail box menu item and empty the trash folder. Then presto the archive is now empty! Paul Hopewell Hello Paul, The short answer to your question is, Yes. For detailed instructions, perform a Google search as it has been quite some time since I configured my settings and my memory may be a bit rusty. Keep in mind that gMail uses labels instead of actual folders; however many use these two terms, interchangeably. Okay, the first thing you will need to do is to set gMail to automatically delete any messages with the Trash label, after 30 days. You will configure this setting from within your gMail.com web interface. On your Mac, from within the Mail preferences area, you will configure the settings such that any deleted messages will be moved to the Trash folder on the server. In this same area, you will find a setting that determines when the Trash folder/label should be permanently purged. Oh, make certain that, while in the gMail.com web interface, you set the All mail folder/label to always be displayed. I believe this setting is located in the Labels area of gMail.com. To remove current items, either from within your OS X Mail client or via the web interface, simply move all of the current archived messages into the Trash folder and then manually delete them via either a button in the Web interface or via the mailbox menu in the Mac mail client. Stopping GMAIL archiving
Hello, I am running the latest El Capitan on my late 2008 iMac. I am using GMAIL with imap protocol. It seems that GMAIL moves every message I have ever sent or received into its all mail folder which appears on my iMac as the archive folder. I do not like GMAIL retaining all these Emails as it reduces my privacy and so would like to stop this behaviour.
