You must be using a desktop machine. On all the laptops I've had, I've been
able to hold down the Command and Option keys with my left thumb, the R key
with my left middle finger, the P key with my right thumb and the Power button

On a desktop machine, you would have to move the keyboard close to the Power

I don't hear 4 chimes, I hear a buzzing sound 4 times, then the normal
startup sound again. Am I executing the reset procedure properly?
I don't think so. I always hear the chimes.

How does one know that it actually worked?
Hearing the chimes tells you that it's working and if problems go away that
didn't go away with just a restart, then that's more evidence that it's worked.

Cheers,

Anne

2010-12-02 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Ann,

I have a laptop. I tried the combination of fingers you suggested. I held
down all 5 keys. What I heard as I was holding down the keys was the buzzing
sound and the startup sound over and over. I finally let go of the keys and
the system booted. I never hear what I would consider to be a chime, just the
normal startup sound. So I'm guessing this has not worked yet for me?

You hold down the Command, Option, R and P keys but just press the Power button
once. Sorry I didn't make that clear in the first place.

I would not worry too much about PRAM's. I have no Apple evidence of
the below message, but I can certainly believe it. Though I suppose
that Apple might have updated the key sequence some to clear out other
nasty issues I don't expect that to be the case.

Begin Qote from Tidbits.com discussion in 2009
On Subject of Grey screen and no boot of Macintosh computers

(And just FYI, the days of resetting PRAM / NVRAM doing anything
useful pretty much died with OS9. These days, about the only thing
that lives there is display resolution settings, so zapping the PRAM
may be useful for troubleshooting video issues, but it is unlikely to
help with anything else. Harmless to try, but meaningless if nothing
improves, because nothing really uses it anymore.)

Re: The Resetting of Prams

2010-12-01 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

Also, holding these keys down is fine, as long as it is done just when you hear
the startup chime. Keep in mind, there is a startup delay, which means that you
can do it within this timeframe. I often just hold down any keys to affect the
startup when I hear the chime. Not a second after, but as soon as I hear it.
The time between hearing the drive and the startup chime itself is significant
enough to actually reach the keys in time.

You will need to hold them for a while, however. First, you will hear the
regular chime. Keep holding them for a while longer, until you hear your drive
again. Don't let go until you hear a second chime, possibly at a much louder
volume depending on your volume settings.

You may also have to reset some settings in preferences, as some of these are
stored in the PRAM.

Nic
