Hi Petrus,

I know it’s been on the android platform for years and sighted folks seem to
love it.
Not sure about the blind folks.

Now I really put the cat amongst the pigeons asking this question. I might give
slide to type another go one day. I think I only got frustrated with it as I
wasn’t expecting it and I couldn’t correct my text. I usually use dictation
while doing a text and then I correct it with the virtual keyboard if there are
any mistakes. Especially embarrassing ones. My wife did tell me about the slide
to type option, but I didn’t think it would be turned on by default.

Donna,
Slide typing is a very sighted thing. It would allow sighted users to type even
faster. They can see where the next letter is located, and drag around to
create words without lifting their finger. I’ve not tried it yet, but it sounds
difficult to me.

Slide to type will anticipate words as you drag your finger across the
keyboard. You don’t lift your finger to select the letter, you just continue to
drag around your desired letters and the word magically occurs. Have not tried
it yet, but that’s the hype.

Glad no insult was taken. :)

One of the things I find fun about technology is playing around with new
gadgets and features. I don't always adopt them, but I'm usually curious
enough to give them a go if I have the time. So, when you do try it out, I
hope you have fun with it.

Hi Dave,

I know you're new to this list, so not sure how much experience you have on the
iPhone. so, apologies in advance if this sounds condescending.

when you've used the iPhone for a while, you develop a pretty good sense for
where things are, including letters. I have used slide typing. I wouldn't say
I'm super proficient at this point, but it really isn't hard at all. I've been
pretty impressed by how often the phone gets the right word.
Cheers,
Donna

Slide to type is a bit like FlickType, as both rely on you roughly knowing
where the letters are on the keyboard, whether you can see them or not. Both
are fairly forgiving so you don’t need to be very precise. My experience so
far, anyway!

Re: Typing on the iPhone

2019-09-28 Thread Dave Carlson
Donna,
Slide typing is a very sighted thing. It would allow sighted users to type even
faster. They can see where the next letter is located, and drag around to
create words without lifting their finger. I’ve not tried it yet, but it sounds
difficult to me.

Re: Typing on the iPhone

2019-09-28 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
With touch typing, the character is entered when you lift your finger. With
touch typing, it's entered when you touch the letter. I could never make touch
typing work very well. You have to have very good aim. :)

Do you mean direct touch typing?

Sorry, I don't get your point at all. With touch typing, you touch the
letters, but you don't slide around the screen. also, I don't see slide typing
as a sighted thing.

2019-09-28 Thread Dave Carlson
Slide to type will anticipate words as you drag your finger across the
keyboard. You don’t lift your finger to select the letter, you just continue to
drag around your desired letters and the word magically occurs. Have not tried
it yet, but that’s the hype.

phone without a lot of unwanted input. If I hold my finger on a letter for a
couple of seconds it will suddenly insert lots of unwanted characters. I have
the typing mode set too touch typing as I’ve always had it, and I know there
must be a setting I can change somewhere to fix this. Oh, I’m using the virtual
keyboard not a bluetooth one.
Oh, and my phone does vibrate a lot more while I’m flicking around the screen
and haven’t worked out where to go to fix that either.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Simon,

If you go into settings, to keyboards, and turn off slide to type, the problem
will go away.

Take care,

RE: Typing on the iPhone

2019-09-28 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Petrus I get this also

I find that going back and deleting the overkill and then carefully retyping
works.

I’ve not found a keyboard setting to correct this yet.

As for the haptic feedback,
Any chance you have like a haptic setting set to something higher than it needs
to be.

That's like saying we should go back to DOS because we managed fine
without it for a decade or two. New features will come, we should be pretty
glad that Apple even gives us the chance to turn them off or even configure
them to what we need, because users of other platforms... aren't so lucky, lol.

Typing on the iPhone

2019-09-27 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Hi all,
Now that I’ve finally updated to 13.1.1 I can’t type in my messages app on the
phone without a lot of unwanted input.
Thanks in advance,
Sent from Petrus' MacBook

RE: Typing on the IPhone and using its GPS

2009-07-25 Thread Simon Fogarty
Dam, I wish had seen this msg yesterday when I was hunting for the call end
button.

I've gotta find a good iphone accessibility tutorial.

Has anyone got one on line that I missed the posting alert of, that they can
point me towards

Thanks

I found that my double-tap wasn't very accurate. I often ended up double
tapping a nearby key or tapping once on one key and the second on another
key. The 'split tap' seemed to work much better.

Another thing that has worked well is the flick left and right through
elements on the screen. For example, in Safari to the right of the URL entry
is a very small clear button. It was hard to impossible to tap it to clear
out the URL and type in a new one. With focus in the URL field a single
flick right brought focus to the clear button and then a double-tap would
clear out the entry field. Much easier that way.

Oh, one other gesture I didn't know about initially. Doing a two-finger
double tap when the phone rings will answer it while a two-finger double tap
during a call will hang up. Much easier that trying to hunt for the answer
and end call buttons.

Umm, yes, much slower on the iPhone. On the mac I have a full-size
keyboard with no need to double tap or anything. Not sure that means
much though.

Re: Typing on the IPhone and using its GPS

2009-07-18 Thread Scott Chesworth

Might be worth you taking a read of the thread entitled iPhone
accessibility James. There's been 19 messages in the last day or so
all around these same questions. There's also been more than a few
podcasts and demos and suchlike, might be worth having a quick poke in
the list archives for those or subscribing to an actual iPhone access
list to keep on top of new ones.
