Re: Unable to Boot into New Startup Volume

2024-05-03 Thread ancient.aliens via MacVisionaries
Cara,
No I cannot boot into either instance of Ventura.

Some background. A month ago the screen on my 2020 MBP broke while I was
booting from Sonoma to Ventura. After repairs the Sonoma volume was fine. But I
had to delete Ventura and install a new copy. I set it
Up just fine.

This id where things went sour. I could could restart in Sonoma but not
Ventura no matter what I did.

Subsequently I created yet another Ventura, did the setting up, it went
well. Until I booted to Sonoma then tried two boot into either copy of Ventura.

When I reboot while holding the option key, both Venturas will say “this
version needs to be installed"

Sorry to hear that.

Can you boot into the Ventura volumes from recovery mode? If you can, can you
then set your startup disk to your Sonoma volume from within Ventura?

Cheers!

My understanding is that Intel-based machines no longer have master boot
records - it's all UEFI.

Apple Silicon machines have their own boot process that, as far as I
know, doesn't follow any externally specified standard.

Re: Unable to Boot into New Startup Volume

2024-05-02 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi ET,

Have you tried running first aid with disk utility from either volume? I would
try this first.

If that fails, (not knowing any other specifics of the situation) if it were
me, I’d back up both volumes to time machine, boot into recovery mode and then
perform first aid on the entire drive from there. I don’t have it in front of
me just at the minute, but you may also be able to see the entire drive in Disk
Utility from within one of the volumes without needing to go into recovery mode.

I would absolutely make sure you have working backups before you do any of this
though. :)

Very best of luck and please keep us up to date with what you find in your
research or what you find that works.

Cheers!

Cara
