VPN stands for virtual private network. Basically what it means is there
can be network resources or services you want to get to privately and
securely. Another use, your use most likely, is you want to secure the
communication from your device to a wired secure destination where someone
in the middle can’t grab your information on the way by. Say you were at
a public WiFi point and you didn’t use a VPN. It’s possible for example
with my computer I could be sitting a table over from you and grab your
name / password and over time more and more critical data as you use your
computer not even knowing what I’m up to. So a VPN encrypts that data and
makes it impossible for me to intercept. That’s very important for public
 WiFi.

They are very easy to use. A client is installed on your computer and you
activate it by clicking connect on a panel or at most entering in a name
and password. If you use keys you may hit connect only and not need
anything more than that. In other cases you can have them automatically
connect once booted. It’s up to the user. Typically they are quite
accessible on most platforms, options range from free on up and it’s a
 matter of installing software.

There are other types of VPNs and all sorts of configurations, I’m going
to leave them out for now as to not confuse you worse then I may have
already. Let me know if you have any questions.

RE: Deal, free or paid vpn that works with Voiceover on Mac and iOS?

2017-04-07 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yes cisco any connect is a client that needs to communicate with a vpn service
at your business or a provider of the vpn service.

We use the same product at work
The cisco any connect is not a vpn service it is just a client for connecting
or enabling your vpn connection.

Nancy,

My office uses a Cisco VPN product with DUO mobile. The client on the Macintosh
side is called Cisco Anytime connect.

This one is fully accessible and has two factor authentication enabled.

When I launch the VPN client, I put in my password in the first password field
and the word "push" into the second password field. A second later I get a
notification on my iPhone. I open the DUO app and click on the word approve and
then the dialog disappears from my computer. At this point all my network
traffic gets re-routed as though I was directly connected in my office. I have
found this very straight forward. My company has about 1000 employees and we
maintain two connection points into the network.

Hope this helps.
DUO also has the ability of working with pin numbers sent via text message, but
I have found for me that the pin often times out before I can find it and type
it into the box.
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Nancy, there’s nothing about VPNs that make them inaccessible that I know of.
Your Mac has several fully accessible clients built in along with lots of add
on packages all that work fine. Do you by chance know what client your IT team
wants you to use? I’d be happy to speak about it directly if you know what’s
being used. In general though, I would not worry about voice over

Re: Deal, free or paid vpn that works with Voiceover on Mac and iOS?

2017-04-06 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
I haven't been following the VPN discussion that closely but I did
stumble upon this article talking about fake VPN services:

https://yro.slashdot.org/story/17/04/05/1944213/phony-vpn-services-are-cashing-in-on-americas-war-on-privacy

Jump by header once to get to the actual article, which is just a
summary with links to a couple web pages.

Hi Nancy, let me give you a bit of background.

VPN stands for virtual private network. Basically what it means is
there can be network resources or services you want to get to
privately and securely. Another use, your use most likely, is you
want to secure the communication from your device to a wired secure
destination where someone in the middle can’t grab your information
on the way by. Say you were at a public WiFi point and you didn’t
use a VPN. It’s possible for example with my computer I could be
sitting a table over from you and grab your name / password and over
time more and more critical data as you use your computer not even
knowing what I’m up to. So a VPN encrypts that data and makes it
impossible for me to intercept. That’s very important for public WiFi.

They are very easy to use. A client is installed on your computer
and you activate it by clicking connect on a panel or at most
entering in a name and password. If you use keys you may hit
connect only and not need anything more than that. In other cases
you can have them automatically connect once booted. It’s up to the
user. Typically they are quite accessible on most platforms,
options range from free on up and it’s a matter of installing software.

There are other types of VPNs and all sorts of configurations, I’m
going to leave them out for now as to not confuse you worse then I
may have already. Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Deal, free or paid vpn that works with Voiceover on Mac and iOS?

2017-04-06 Thread Jonathan Cohn

 Hi!
Does a server means that you can have a raspberry pi to act as a vpn
 server to?
This could be something to dig into.

Hi Scott,

Just curious, does the Airport Extreme have VPN as an option?

Ah Simon, it’s like this, I’ve never seen Unix kill anyone, I have seen Windows
though. This was a long time ago but when I was on a support call where
someone died as a result of a windows crash I never put any faith in it again.
That combined with the DOD (department of defense). Complete lack of security
certification. I know things have improved but in my opinion, Microsoft is a
consumer operating system at best and has no place in the real operations
world. Thankfully, most large providers and enterprises agree with me.

That being said, I’m absolutely certain there is a port of open VPN for
windows. Clients are no problem and plentiful and servers are available at
openvpn.org if memory serves.

Also remember Netgear routers among others include Open VPN as a feature you
can simply enable.

I bought a lifetime subscription to shymo vpn and while the specs

I see that tiger vpn for mac, iOS, and windows is on sale for $29

Re: Deal, free or paid vpn that works with Voiceover on Mac and iOS?

2017-04-04 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Nancy, let me give you a bit of background.

VPN stands for virtual private network. Basically what it means is there can
be network resources or services you want to get to privately and securely.
Another use, your use most likely, is you want to secure the communication from
your device to a wired secure destination where someone in the middle can’t
grab your information on the way by. Say you were at a public WiFi point and
you didn’t use a VPN. It’s possible for example with my computer I could be
sitting a table over from you and grab your name / password and over time more
and more critical data as you use your computer not even knowing what I’m up
to. So a VPN encrypts that data and makes it impossible for me to intercept.
That’s very important for public WiFi.

They are very easy to use. A client is installed on your computer and you
activate it by clicking connect on a panel or at most entering in a name and
password. If you use keys you may hit connect only and not need anything more
than that. In other cases you can have them automatically connect once booted.
It’s up to the user. Typically they are quite accessible on most platforms,
options range from free on up and it’s a matter of installing software.

There are other types of VPNs and all sorts of configurations, I’m going to
leave them out for now as to not confuse you worse then I may have already.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Simon, for a highly skilled unix administrator like your self, you could do
it in your sleep. As a newly and someone who wants to break in to unix
administration like some on the list may be, a very easy but worth while
project.

I could write something up for instructions but basically. You use yum or
apt-get install open vpn and the rsa kit for generating certs, you issue a
certificate authority, use that to issue certs for your machine, write a small
configuration file for the server and one per client and then just push the
config and certs / keys to each client and load them in to the client software.
Most of this is automatic. Very simple and very powerful. You can use 4096
bit keys or stronger and sha512 hashes. That will even give Uncle Sam and the
tappers a run for their money.

I think you could do this on a raspberry pie 3 no problem the only issue is you
only have 1 ethernet so you’ll need to use the WiFi as an access point and or
join the network with the WiFi and use the ethernet as the inside. You could
also install an ethernet USB dongle to add another wired port.

Also remember, nether routers include open vpn in their higher end gear already
set up.

configuration file for the server and one per client and then just push the
config and certs / keys to each client and load them in to the client software.

Also remember, nether routers include open vpn in their higher end gear already
set up.

Re: free or paid vpn that works with Voiceover on Mac and iOS?

2017-04-03 Thread Scott Granados
Well, if you mean your internal IP you can just reserve a DHCP reservation so
it always receives the same IP in the lease.
If you mean your external IP, why not use dynamic DNS? There are some
providers that offer both free and paid solutions, google dynamic DNS providers
or better yet go in to your router and see which services are provided as part
of the feature. You can then use an FQDN instead of an IP address for your
configurations.

Scott

You mentioned writing a script for OpenVPN on a Rasberry Pi, below is a script
that I did and did not find very Screen Reader friendly.

https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=36=137240

Now I have to redo now that i have switched my router. My roouter has a dynamic
IP. a Static IP is required.

Anders, yes you could install open VPN on a raspberry Pi. You could use the
WiFi side as the inside interface and the Ethernet as the outside. I have not
tried this but it should be possible.

Re: free or paid vpn that works with Voiceover on Mac and iOS?

2017-04-03 Thread Christine Grassman
Could someone please direct me to a site, book, tutorial for a VPN novice who
would like to use one? I’ve been told that TorGuard, Vyper, and Mullvid are
some of the few that do not have historical issues with leakage, that is, do
not show all or part of your IP address. Naturally, though, I must be sure it
works with VoiceOver, and I do not want to “mess anything up” as someone who is
not much of a techie. I also would like to learn the basics like: What happens
with your most visited web sites apps, and services if you use a VPN, such as
iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, Jet, etc.? Do you have to shut it off when you use sites
that save a shopping bag or where you have a watch list, etc.? Sorry for the
ignorance, but I need a place to start, as I imagine most of the VPN info out
there does not take VoiceOver and accessibility in general into account. I have
been unable to find anything, for example, on how accessible and complicated
the Tor browser is to set up as far as accessibility.
Thanks for any help.
Christine

Hi!
Does a server means that you can have a raspberry pi to act as a vpn server to?
This could be something to dig into.

RE: free or paid vpn that works with Voiceover on Mac and iOS?

2017-04-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
Just wondering if you've looked at this from a slightly different angle,

 What about SSH?

If you setup SSH to a machine at home or where ever it is your trying to
connect using vpn, then connecting using that
Might be a cheaper and easier option.

SSH is just a tick box on your mac,

Just another thought that might work for you also.

My suggestion is to use Open VPN on a server. While you have the ongoing server
cost as little as $5 per month, you do have a lot more flexibility. You can
attach your phone, tablets, or Mac with totally free clients (windows as well)
that are totally accessible. Y ou also have the advantage of not necessarily
being in a VPN database so you’re not blocked from Netflix for example.

Hi!
Does a server means that you can have a raspberry pi to act as a vpn server to?
This could be something to dig into.

 Try express vpn

Subject: free or paid vpn that works with Voiceover on Mac and iOS?

Hi everybody. I'm looking for a vpn that is reliable and works with voiceover
on OSX, iOS, and any screen reader on windows, although that last point is no
big deal either way. Free or a one time license fee would be preferred.

I've found that express vpn works very well with voiceover but I don't want to
pay fourteen dollars a month forever to use it.

I bought a lifetime subscription to shymo vpn and while the specs are good,
it's not working on the older mac that I use for various internet activities.

Anyways, I tried hide me vpn for mac that didn't even want to launch for some
reason, and, I recently tried cyberghost on mac and windows and had no joy on
either operating system...

I see that tiger vpn for mac, iOS, and windows is on sale for $29 for the next
two days. I don't see anything about accessibility on any platform anywhere
though and don't want to waste more money on a vpn I won't be able to use.

This price only lasts for the next two days though so I need to make up my mind
pretty quickly.

Has anybody used Tiger vpn and if so, what are your thoughts? Also, any other
recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Cameron.

Re: free or paid vpn that works with Voiceover on Mac and iOS?

2017-04-01 Thread Matthew Elliff
I really like freedome by F secure. It's very fast, and there is a free trial
to give it a try. I forget the monthly cost, but I am paying half of it with my
brother for a year for multiple devices. It works great with my iPhone using
voice over. There are other versions for windows and Mac, but I haven't tried
them out. If you do, let me know if there are accessible.

free or paid vpn that works with Voiceover on Mac and iOS?

2017-04-01 Thread Cameron Strife
Hi everybody. I'm looking for a vpn that is reliable and works with
voiceover on OSX, iOS, and any screen reader on windows, although that
last point is no big deal either way. Free or a one time license fee
would be preferred.

I've found that express vpn works very well with voiceover but I don't
want to pay fourteen dollars a month forever to use it.

I bought a lifetime subscription to shymo vpn and while the specs are
good, it's not working on the older mac that I use for various
internet activities.

Anyways, I tried hide me vpn for mac that didn't even want to launch
for some reason, and, I recently tried cyberghost on mac and windows
and had no joy on either operating system...

I see that tiger vpn for mac, iOS, and windows is on sale for $29 for
the next two days. I don't see anything about accessibility on any
platform anywhere though and don't want to waste more money on a vpn I
won't be able to use.

This price only lasts for the next two days though so I need to make
up my mind pretty quickly.

Has anybody used Tiger vpn and if so, what are your thoughts? Also,
any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Cameron.
