Re: Does VoiceOver work with Dragon Dictate or MacSpeech on a Mac (not the iPad)?

2011-08-10 Thread Maurice Mines
hello, yes Dragon Dictate does work on an actual Mac computer, this is
evidenced by the fact that I'm writing this e-mail completely with Dragon
Dictate, the thing that you must be aware of is that as you dictate, is
probably an extremely good idea to turn voiceover off. You can certainly use
voice over when you are not dictating. It is kind of tricky to edit your
documents, I would strongly suggest that if you do do this if you can invest in
a good braille display. Just my thoughts. Maurice minds, amateur radio call
sign KD0IKO. Note this e-mail has been dictated with Dragon dictate, please
forgive any errors in the software, and they may be the result of the software,
or the dictation process. Thank you very much for reading this.

Hi Colin, Art, and Others,

A couple of people on the mac-access list who have MacSpeech Dictate
are just in the process of trying the update to Dragon Dictate. So
far there have been a few snags, so I haven't heard more about this.
You could subscribe to the mac-access list if you're interested in
following up on this in their discussions -- it's a good list, and the
traffic is nowhere near as high as on macvisionaries. Here's the link
for more information on subscribing:

I also like the way the training works. It appears in 1.5.8, when you do
training it moves on to the next sentence when it has recognised the
current one. Now all we need is for it to correctly with VO enabled, echo
our phrases rather than just the last word of 2 of a sentence.

Dear Phil,
Ifyou have sl, you can press control option u and bring up the
web item rotor. You navigate to archives. Than you find the podcast
you are looking for. In the title of the show you should see mac
speech. I hope this helps.

I have heard that Mac Speech Dictate works extremely well with

I also like the way the training works. It appears in 1.5.8,

Re: [Mac-cessibility News] MacSpeech Dictate Receives Update to V1.5.6

2009-11-08 Thread Chris Hofstader

Way back, when Macintosh was the only mass market computer with a
sound card of acceptable quality and a 68030 processor with a memory
map system that could address something like a large neural net, it
was the only place that the then fledgling Dragon could bring it - of
course, accessibility API, even MSAA, were still well in the future,
so the program was designed for users without a disability. When they
decided to port to Windows to catch the large market share, they did
so with lots of owner drawn windows so the look and feel was the same
on all platforms. Non-standard, owner drawn windows cause more
application inaccessibility than anything else so, it worked poorly
with JAWS on Windows and with anything on the Mac.

Dragon got acquired by SpeechWorks which, in turn, acquired a few
other companies and changed its name to Nuance. Somewhere in there,
they dropped the Mac version. The MacSpeach guys worked out a license
with Nuance and tried to bring it back to Mac but did so keeping the
owner drawn, inaccessible, UI elements.

I'm really busy on a lot of different projects and hope to take a
vacation in December (South Beach for Christmas) but I do hope to take
a look at what MacSpeach provides through AppleScript and see if it
isn't possible to force accessibility upon it. The Windows version
has a really serious scripting functionality set that Brian Hartgen
takes full advantage of in jSay. If it's as good on Mac, (no
guarantee as it is in the hands of a different company altogether) it
will be a pretty hard project but definitely doable.

There is no demo of MacSpeech Dictate. It's an unfortunate decision by the
company. You're stuck buying it sight unseen, so to speak.
