2020-11-11 Thread 'Andy Logue' via MacVisionaries

Hi there.

I'll do so, but if you got my message and cannot read it, then you have a
problem at your end.

Are you poossibly seeing a message with black letters on a black background?

Try opening the message again. Tab to the main body of the messatge.

Do a control A to highlight everything that may or may not be in there,
followed by control c.

Launch your office program and start a new page and do Control V.

If there was anything in the main body, it's now on the new office/word
document you created.

Try reading the whole messge, even if there appears to be nothing on the
screen.

And write again tomorrow.

Hope you get this sorted.

Andy.

Re: mac os big sur + mbp 16 2020: feel totally ripped off by the touch bar

2021-04-25 Thread 'Andy Logue' via MacVisionaries

Hi there.

I totally agree with you. This is why I purchased an external keyboard.
I've never enjoyed keyboards on Microsoft or Apples. and much prefer a good
old fashioned tactile external keyboard.

I purchased the same computer as you just at the end of the year and it is
only now that I'm able to secure sighted assistance in getting started,
because of lock-down. Though rather than being very excited about this I'm
feeling pretty sick and anxious.

I personally hate keyboards on laptop's as they always seem so cramped. In
some cases you get machines that do not discriminate between the QUERTY and
6 pack and the 6 pack and the numeric.

I'm total and have very poor tactile skills, so I'm virtually unable to use
one of those flush type models.

Another thing I hate is the slippyness or sleeckness of my new Mac, my
fingers just slip all over the place. I am very nerviouse and my fingers
are shaking with the stress.

As you say Apple are very focused on looks and my own computer, in gun metal
gray probably looks great for the show off's

As for the new Trackpad, well what can I say? Better just saying nothing at
all.

Now if we had reverse the process of inventions and it was only now that
Apple had announced the latest technology of F keys we all would be
delighted and celebrating.

Subject: mac os big sur + mbp 16 2020: feel totally ripped off by the touch
bar

I am ranting on this post, but I really cannot stand this touch bar anymore.
It's completely useless on a functional basis, as when trying to do stuff in
an efficient way, such as switching applications and using the function keys
for doing the switches, I have to keep massaging the damn touch bar with a
finger long enough for it to decide to wake up at some point. Each time I do
this, it's like a 4 to 6 second wait. that time is enough for me to have to
remember either the line of math or code or whatever I was keeping in memory
to move across to another application or such.

I really cannot stand this absolute farce of a feature which is meant to
make things look pretty but has no use at all when it comes to being
productive. And having a mac for me is meant to be synonymous with being
efficient and productive, least path of resistance, it just works, those
kind of things. The touch bar is the complete contrarian design idiocy that
for some reason creeped into a perfectly awesome laptop which is the macbook
pro 16 inch.

I spent over 7000 australian dollars for this, and the touch bar itself
jjust makes me want to throw this laptop out of the window at least 5 times
a day, simply because this entire row of touch screen pretty pretty but
totally useless b buttons is there not wanting to wake up snappilly and
respond to what I want it to do.

A complete thumbs down on whoever gave the green light on this most stupid
feature.

Alternative to Apple Keyboard

2021-03-05 Thread 'Andy Logue' via MacVisionaries
Hi all.

As a consequence of poor tactile feeling in my fingers and hands, I much prefer
to use an Apple external keyboard to the on-board keyboards I've come across.

The Apple keyboard I'm referring to is solidly built; Has a half inch step to
rays the rear end of the keyboard, just below the IF keys and is about 4 inches
broad.

The Query keys are slightly apart and have a solid and sure click; The 6 pack
and navigation and numeric sections are also professionally constructed to give
someone with my poor touch a degree of confidence. I'm gutted however as I've
managed somehow to damage my keyboard by spilling something over it.

The Apple store in Glasgow are asking for £115 for a replacement. Despite my
love of this keyboard, I think it's rather too expensive.

I've noted on this list that some members have purchased None Apple keyboards
using Amazon.

Can anyone please guide me to such a keyboard and also, tell me if it is as
nice as Apples own model or should I stick with Apple.

Thanks.

Very best wishes.

Andy Logue.

Turning voiceover on and off quickly

2021-10-19 Thread 'Andy Logue' via MacVisionaries
Hi all.

I used to press the home button, on my iphone, three times to quickly turn
voice over off or on again, when handing my phone to a sighted user when they
were helping me.

This no longer seems to work so I've got to go the long way around by going
into settings, accessability and then voice over.

Can anyone tell me of a quick way of doing this, theses days.

Very best wishes.

Re: Turning voiceover on and off quickly

2021-10-20 Thread 'Andy Logue' via MacVisionaries
Hi Tim and Dave.

I never mentioned a 3 finger triple tap. I didn't know of it's excistance.

What I meant to say is that I used to press the home button 3 times rapidly to
disarm voice over and 4 times to turn it back on.

This allowed my sighted wife to help me create a new contact for example.

I'm not sure how by simply turning the volume of voice over up or down would be
of help in any circumstances and would still burden the sighted person by it's
interference.

Incidentally, time mentioned Serie for turning voice over off and on.

Do you mean that I'd press the home button for a few seconds, until I hear a
tone then say something like "Serie, turn voice over on" or whatever.

Thanks guys for any assistance.

Very best wishes,

Andy Logue.

  Hi,

Actually, a three-finger double-tap does not toggle VoiceOver on and off.
The three-finger double-tap toggles on/off VoiceOver speech, but VoiceOver
gesture navigation remains on. This would be problematic for a sighted user as
their normal gestures would not work as expected. Therefore, you could confirm
that the Accessibility shortcut is still set correctly as Doug suggested, or
you could use Siri to turn VO on and off.

Hi Doug.

I think you have the answer I'm looking for.

Sure, I can get assistance to turn voice over off or on by going the long way
via settings/accessability and so on, but your talking about voice over
"shortcuts" Are you refering to 3 and 4 rapid presses of the home button to
quickly disarm serie or re-arm it it? I really do hope so, because this is how
I had my phone set up in the past and that worked for me nicely.

Very best wishes.

You can fix this by going to Settings, Accessibility, Accessibility Shortcut,

Hi all.

My biggest computing interest is listening to shows on the BBC Iplayer app

I record these broadcasts either through Total Recorder or Goldwave, then

Can all of these things be done on my 2020 Macbook Pro, or do I need to
restrict this hobby to Microsoft devices? as my Mac cannot rune the above
programmes?

Thanks very much for any assistance.

Feel free to answer this off list, but did you capture the most recent
interview with sir. Paul McCartney from a few weeks back?

BBC radio 4 I believe?
