[Mailman-Users] help installing Mailman

2001-04-26 Thread Becky Wilson

Where might I find someone to walk me through the set up of the program?
I've read all the instructions and read me files, but I'm still lost. I
didn't realize it was going to *this* difficult! Thank you for your time.

Well, first off, where do you feel stuck? What kind of system do you have,
and how are you thinking of installing it? I'm willing to help, but you need
to start somewhere.

The truth is, you do need a fair bit of basic understanding of Unix commands
and OS structure, how your mailer program works (sendmail/exim/postfix), how
e-mail in general works, as well as some knowledge of Apache, too. Without
this basic knowledge, installing and setting up Mailman might well be
impossible. I'd suggest if you don't have this knowledge, find someone local
who does, who can install it for you.

This sounds like a qmail set up issue, which I am not familiar with. But it
also might be an issue of whether or not the domain
emailserver.mydomain.com.br is in your hosts table. Also, you said
lists.mydomain.com.br, then emailserver.mydomain.com.br, then later again
lists.mydomain.com.br So which is it? Is it possible that in Mailman you've
set the domain to be emailserver but in qmail, or in your hosts table you
have lists? In that case, I'm sure that qmail (and everything else) would
barf.

No, because you don't build mailman by yourself.
You can run your web server (Apache, ...) using gid 48

For Apache :
# grep group httpd.conf
Group web

and is /etc/group, number for web is 48.

The message mailman sent you is explicit : it is configured to want GID
48, but the http daemon ran with GID 99. You have to set the same GID.

other hand htdig should be faster.

Few (none that I know of, except for the rarely used Microsoft MCIS
IMAP Server) IMAP servers index the mailboxes for fast searching.
This means that searching over large archives is going to be expensive
(in time and disk activity). Using an indexing solution such as htdig
is probably a better solution, especially for active lists.

All those in favor of changing this error message to read something like:

Mailman CGI error!!!

Mailman was compiled to use GID 48, but the web server is
running as GID
99. You must run ./configure again --with-cgi-gid=99, as described in
the INSTALL document that came with this distribution, and recompile.

raise your hand. Anyway, reword it so it's unmistakable what the problem is.

[Mailman-Users] why is only admin getting messages

2001-04-26 Thread Kirk Wythers

Currently, new list members can sign on our list, but when a listmember tries
to post a message to the list, only the administrator gets the message. The
list is suppose to be moderated (i.e. Must posts be approved by the
administrator? Yes).

If a list member tries to post a message, the administrator does not receive
notification that administrator authorization is required. Rather the admin
receives a copy of the posted message. Is this the way it is supposed to
work? I thought that the administrator should get notification, then visit
the Tend to administrative requests page, and either approve or not approve
the post.

Thanks,

Kirk
