Hi,

A couple of things here...

Is that the Debian kernel you are using which is at 2.6.8, that is the
kernel that ships with Sarge (the previous Debian release). We are now
on Etch, which is the stable release, so using that version is highly
advised.

Is this an upgrade of Mailman from the Debian Sarge mailman package
(which, if I remember correctly was at 2.1.5) or some other Mailman you
installed from source? This is important as the Debian package looks
for things in different places than the default installation from
source.

Have you upgraded the whole Debian system to stable (Etch), or just the
Mailman packages?

We really need more background to this.

Andrew.

[Mailman-Users] /bin/sh: mailman: command not found

2008-10-19 Thread Fahad Saeed

Hello All,

I am trying to install mailman on my server.I followed this tutorial:

http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/Lin...alMailman.html

After following all the steps, mailman seeems to be working as well as
the webpage for the list. If I subscribe to the list, I get an email in
my email inbox(hotmail, yahoo etc) for confirmation of the membership
etc.

But there are two problems that I would like to discuss and your input would be
appreciable

1)If I email from one of my email box(subscribed to the list), the email is not
forwarded to any of the members.

2) I keep getting the following email in my administrator email box:

Code:
As list administrator, your authorization is requested for the
following mailing list posting:

List:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
From:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Cron [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailman /usr/lib/mailman/cron/gate_news
Reason: Post by non-member to a members-only list

At your convenience, visit:

http://mydomain/mailman/admindb/mailman

to approve or deny the request.
If I allow, root to be subscibed to the list, I get the email to all the
recipients of the list, with the message:

Code:
[Mailman] Cron [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailman
/usr/lib/mailman/cron/gate_news‏
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] on behalf of Cron Daemon ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

This is really a RedHat package question (i.e. why doesn't RedHat's
package update Postfix main.cf?), but ...

It is better to keep your Mailman aliases separate. Otherwise, you will
run into permissions issues and also, Mailman doesn't really know
about 'other' aliases in /etc/aliases and various Mailman events can
lose some or all of them.

You probably have something like

alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases

in your Postfix main.cf. Possibly other files are listed too. You need
to add hash:/etc/mailman/aliases to the list, e.g.

alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases, hash:/etc/mailman/aliases

and reload postfix.

Question 1 - is the delay in SMTP from Mailman to exim or is the delay

If you want further help from this list, please confirm that SMTP
delivery from Mailman to exim is the issue and post some Mailman smtp
log entries that show that.

If the delay is outbound from exim, you'd probably be better off
pursuing this on an exim list.

You said bin/list_lists shows the lists, so presumably they are where
they should be unless the web server is pointing at CGI wrappers from

Have you checked where the scriptalias in the web server points?

Can you go successfully go to a

OK, now we are making progress. Thanks. I can indeed see the list if I
supply the list name in the link like you suggested. I guess that means
the scriptalias is correct so the question now becomes, why do they not
show up on the admin or listinfo links? Does this also mean if I start
mailman it will work in spite of the incorrect web interface?

Yes, Mailman will probably work if you start it as long as aliases or
whatever is required for mail delivery to the list are in place.

As far as lists missing from the listinfo overview, we are back to the
FAQ at http://wiki.list.org/x/lYA9.

Assuming the lists are public (Privacy options... - advertised = Yes),
the list doesn't appear on the overview because

VIRTUAL_HOST_OVERVIEW = On

(the default), and the host portion of the list's web_page_url
attribute does not exactly match the host portion of the URL used to
access the page.

Perhaps you had

VIRTUAL_HOST_OVERVIEW = Off

in mm_cfg.py on the old server and didn't carry it over. Or, perhaps
you changed it in Defaults.py on the old server; if so, this is why
you shouldn't do that.

You don't want two crontabs. You want only one.

You either want one like either of the above as user mailman's crontab
in /var/spool/cron/mailman (this is the one manipulated by the
crontab -u mailman command), or you want one like you originally had
in /etc/cron.d/mailman.

You broke the /etc/cron.d/mailman crontab by removing the 'mailman'
from the sixth field of the commands.

I suggest you remove the /var/spool/cron/mailman crontab, either
directly or with the command crontab -u mailman -r, and put the
/etc/cron.d/mailman crontab that your RPM installed back the way it
was originally with command lines like

27 3 * * * mailman /usr/lib/mailman/cron/nightly_gzip

This way, when you upgrade your package, you won't wind up with two
crontabs again.

None of this ever had anything to do with your users not receiving
mail. That is a separate issue. See the FAQ at
http://wiki.list.org/x/A4E9 for troubleshooting.

However, your 'mailman' site list was properly delivering mail to it's
members when your cron error messages were being mailed to it, so the
non-delivery problem is probably specific to the list that isn't
working.

Go through the troubleshooting FAQ, and if you can't figure it out, at
least report what you find.

[Mailman-Users] adding users to MailWatch

2008-10-19 Thread Dave Filchak
Why is it that when you add a domain administrator for a particular
domain, you get the following error when they try to look at or add to
the white or black lists:

Username is not in the correct format to use this utility.

For instance, I gave him the username of: domainuser with a password
(not his actual email password). This allows him to log into MailWatch
and see the mail and quarantines for his domain. However, he gets the
error noted above when he tries to access the lists. If I change his
username to [EMAIL PROTECTED], it allows him to access the lists
but retrieves no rows from the database, even though there is mail
quarantined. The other weird thing is that, even though he can access
the lists, the format is wrong i.e. @[EMAIL PROTECTED] rather
than @hisdomain.com.

What am I missing?

and see the mail and quarantines for his domain. However, he gets the
error noted above when he tries to access the lists. If I change his
username to [EMAIL PROTECTED], it allows him to access the
lists but retrieves no rows from the database, even though there is
mail quarantined. The other weird thing is that, even though he can
access the lists, the format is wrong i.e. @[EMAIL PROTECTED]
rather than @hisdomain.com.

What am I missing?

Dave

[Mailman-Users] Help - Mailman programs all do Memory Fault' on Linux, here's what I tried to fix it

2008-10-19 Thread Don Steiny
Hi,

I am on Debian 2.6.8. I used apt-get to update Python to 2-4 and
the latest version of mailman.  I used one archive in sources.list;

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

When I attempt to start it I get this message:

#
# /etc/init.d/mailman start
* Site list for mailman (usually named mailman) missing.
* Please create it; until then, mailman will refuse to start.

Searching around the web I found I needed to create a list mailman
(though I have not figured out why it was not seeing my existing lists,
that is for later) I got this;
# newlist mailman
Memory fault

I thought the problem might be with the debian mailmail I went to
sourceforge and downloaded and installed 2.1.11 and nothing changed. I
though the problem might be with Python, I downlaoded and installed
Python 2.6 and there were changes in that when I tried to install
mailman I got this:
Compiling /var/lib/mailman/Mailman/i18n.py ...
Compiling /var/lib/mailman/Mailman/versions.py ...
bin/update:37: DeprecationWarning: the md5 module is deprecated; use
hashlib instead
  import md5
/var/lib/mailman/Mailman/Utils.py:32: DeprecationWarning: the sha module
is deprecated; use the hashlib module instead
  import sha
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File bin/update, line 51, in module
from Mailman import MailList
  File /var/lib/mailman/Mailman/MailList.py, line 51, in module
from Mailman.Archiver import Archiver
  File /var/lib/mailman/Mailman/Archiver/__init__.py, line 17, in module
from Archiver import *
  File /var/lib/mailman/Mailman/Archiver/Archiver.py, line 32, in module
from Mailman import Mailbox
  File /var/lib/mailman/Mailman/Mailbox.py, line 21, in module
import mailbox
  File /usr/local/lib/python2.6/mailbox.py, line 19, in module
import email.message
ImportError: No module named message
make: *** [update] Error 1

I copied over the 2.4 mailbox.py file to 2.6 and then I could compile
everything with the sha and md5 warnings, which are supposedly no big
deal, and I got one tiny change:

/usr/sbin/newlist:96: DeprecationWarning: the sha module is deprecated;
use the hashlib module instead
  import sha
Memory fault

What should I do next? Help!

-Don

Go to the list archive at

and read the two replies to your identical post from yesterday.
