The options on the stock mailman installation are 'Confirm', 'Require
Approval' or 'Confirm and Approve'. You would want 'Require Approval'
only.

Hi d D ! ( grin ) ...Different person with the same problem
hereWe tried that when we originally set up our new mailing list
thinking we could copy/paste subscriber emails to our old mailing list into
this field... all it did was send out invitations to subscribe..It didnt
actually subscribe them...They still have to reply to the verify email and
thats where we are having the problem...
I am having trouble with our members either not getting
the verification emails or probably
having them dumped into spam filter files... We are dealing with a lot of
elderly ( 70 +) porcelain artists who are artists and not computer geeks..
:-) and I have several who have resubscribed 4 or 5 times and are just
not getting the idea of reply to the verify letter...and there are also
some who manage to retrieve the letters or click on the webpage link in
the email only to be told that it is an invalid verification code... ( I
know these expire after 3 days... but these are ones that are giving the
errors on the same day they are dated... )
Also, if anybody has some recommendations of good MUAs ( boy , I hope
i used the right term here ) that will display Mailman properly with
styled text, Im all ears... I personally run Eudora and it displays
everything... but some of our listers are getting either scrubbed messages
or every message as an attachment. I would love to be able to take
advantage of colored text so if anyone has any suggestions I can pass
along, Im all ears...
 Thanks , everybody

You have to set the option on the Mass Subscription page to 'Subscribe'
not 'Invite' before you submit the list. Your list probably was set up
to 'Invite' by default.

I am having trouble with our members either not getting
 the verification emails or probably
having them dumped into spam filter files... We are dealing with a lot of

There isn't much you can do about user error except for subscribing
their addresses yourself using the above info. It does work.

Also, if anybody has some recommendations of good MUAs ( boy , I hope
i used the right term here ) that will display Mailman properly with
styled text, Im all ears... I personally run Eudora and it displays

If you are having MUA issues, it is best to just send out plain text...
it is the only failsafe method.

A few months ago, I started hosting the bogofilter mailing lists. They
had been hosted elsewhere using qmail and ezmlm. Given subscriber
lists, I was able to use mailman's add_members commands. With separate
lists of regular and digest subscribers (and the corresponding '-r' and
'-d' options) and the --welcome-msg=n option, I was able to subscribe
everyone without any need for action by the individual subscribers.

The use of MUA is much a matter of operating system used and individual
preference. I've been using Sylpheed-Claws under Linux for the past
year and like its GUI. I understand it's also available for Windoze.

Regards,

David

The 'Subscribe' option should be just above the 'send welcome...'
option.

What version of Mailman are you running and on what operating system?

Yes. If you have shell access, this will definitely work but it doesn't
sound like marci and rex have shell access.

Or do they?

Nope.. its not there... just the blue bar saying Mass Subscriptions
and then the Send welcome ... Looks like the LFCHosting guys took
  it out...
What version of Mailman are you running and on what operating
  system?
2.1.4 and we are using it from the LFCHosting website...I dont
  know what they are running..
So it looks like we're up the creek, then , huh.

It would appear that way :(

The admins at LFCHosting probably did this to prevent spammers from
abusing their service, which is not a bad idea, but doesn't help your
situation.

The only other way to get around this that I know of is to choose
'Require approval' instead of 'Confirm' on the Privacy page. This will
simply require you to approve the subscription requests on the 'pending
moderator requests' page instead of the users confirming the requests.
I would assume that your hosting service removed this option too,
though.
