MI AD: Compass V2 Release

2000-03-23 Thread Robert Healy

Dear Mappers

Meridian GIS is pleased to announce that Version 2 of our Data Management
product, COMPASS, has now been released. Version 2 represents a significant
improvement over Version 1, including spatial searching and unlimited
categories.

Developed to manage the increasingly large amounts of MapInfo data, Compass
will catalogue and maintain Tables, Saved Queries, Workspaces, Images and
Oracle 8i connections. The catalogues can be searched either hierarchically
or spatially and the results presented to the user in a logical, intuitive
interface with corresponding metadata.

A more detailed description of Compass can be found on our homepage together
with the complete html help.
I would invite those who are interested, to download a demo copy from our
home page.

Yours sincerely,

Rob Healy

Re: MI MapExtreme - cannot export Gif format.

2000-03-23 Thread Roeland van der Spek

Mazuaz,

If I recall correctly, you must explicitly state that you want to convert
maps to GIFS during the MapExtreme setup. This is because the GIF format is
copyright protected and you are required to pay your dues. If you ommit this
the GIF format is not available.

In MapJ 1.0 only tiff seem to work. For us, in version 2.0 all rasters seems
to work but are unstable. For now, we don't use anymore MapJ for draw
rasters, we draw the raster in a bufferedimage and insert this raster layer
on the workspace in the rendering process of MapJ..

The information I have seen about MapXtreme Java indicates that TAB
files for raster images can be opened, along with GeoTIFF images. I am
using the Map Definition Manager to add them but have tried
unsuccessfully to get results when opening a TAB file that refers to a
registered TIFF. The TAB files will open but no image seems to be
displayed.

Has anybody else been able to open images in MapXtreme Java ? Is there
something that I am foolishly missing ?

I do not have any GeoTIFF images that I can test, so if anyone can point
me in the direction of something I could use to test that as well I
would much appreciate it.

Re: MI automatically locating a caller on cellular networks

2000-03-23 Thread john-mccarthy

Yes for both questions.. somewhat
I do not believe accuracy to 25 meters can be claimed,
even though someone trying to sell you something will
tell you anything you want to hear. There are 3 and
perhaps 4 ways of identifying location, the problem is
that equipment needs to be located at the cellsite for
the carrier. Equipment vendors use such techniques as
the timing difference between when each cellsite sees
the signal, timing difference between antennas located
at the same cellsite, the strength of the signal
transmitted by the phone, timing infomation located in
the bit stream in some wireless technologies like TDMA
(time division multiple access) and CDMA, and I've heard
something on the timing in CDMA (code division multiple
access) and using the reference gps from the cellsite,
all cellsites in CDMA systems use gps timing to time all
users on the cellsite (Sprint, Primeco...). Cellular
carriers also can pinpoint a phone to a single antenna
beam on a single cellsite from reports in the network
switching office. Research the subject 'time of
arrival' and see what you come up with. Wireless phones
at the end of the year will have gps installed in them
by some of the manufacturers, if they hit the market,
Big Brother is watching, will again have a new twist.

RE: Text from Word to MI 5.5

2000-03-23 Thread jwa inc.

a sub-hack, if you have a postscript printer, would be to print an eps file
of your map and put that into word.

depending on your text, you might be able to break it up into paragraphs and
place them into your layout one paragraph at a time. if you save just that
layout as a workspace, then you can add the workspace and copy and past the
text to any other layout.

good luck

bob

There are a couple of options (hacks for you programmers):

 1) Use Word as your layout program - import the map into Word and do your
layout around it. I usually dump it to an image using File | Save
 Window As
but it is also possible to copy the map window and paste it as an OLE
object. To get a higher resolution of the image you export,
 specify an image
width of about 3 times the final size when using the File | Save Window As
 command.

 Hi Jeff

There are a couple of options (hacks for you programmers):

but it is also possible to copy the map window and paste it as an OLE

image
width of about 3 times the final size when using the File | Save Window As

 2) Do the same thing - but in PowerPoint. PowerPoint actually makes a
pretty
good layout program and it handles images better than Word. It also has a
number of easier-to-use graphics tools that make the layout process work
better. I have had great luck using PowerPoint as the poor man's desktop
publisher - it's easy to use, the output can be scaled and it is actually
pretty powerful. You not only get a document that prints well, but also
the
basis for a powerful slide presentation.

 3) The third option (and this can work very well) is to get your text out
to
an image file. This is not always easy to do, but it is possible. The
image
file can then be placed in a Mapinfo layout window.

Whatever choice you make, you will probably find that you need to edit the
image a bit. I would suggest a wonderful shareware image editor -
PaintShop
Pro. Go to http://www.jasc.com to download a 30 day trial - which is
usually
enough for a quick project. I would strongly suggest registering the
product
if you like it - it is a very powerful image editor with a reasonable
price
 (under $250 US I think).

 Good luck!

MI My new health geographics site

2000-03-23 Thread Marjorie Roswell

Hello Colleagues,

I thought I'd share the site that grew out of my presentation to the
International Health Geographics conference

http://hello.to/healthgeo
   or
http://abyan.com/default.asp?PAGE=17F.1

This site is a little different than the one I prepared for MapWorld a few
years ago. (http://research.umbc.edu/~roswell/mipage.html) Rather, it's
based on a commercial portal-building site. The whole thing prints on one
sheet of paper. Not as flexible as a more homegrown web site, but I think
the portal method works, overall, especially in terms of ease of
maintainence, but also for the user.

I've got some pretty cool health goegraphy content there, including a
"submit your own" section.

So I invite you to take a peek, send your feedback, and share your great
health geographics content...

Re: MI automatically locating a caller on cellular networks

2000-03-23 Thread Rajeev saraf

I remember reading somewhere that some company in UK that
developed aan algorithm or software to locate a caller within 20 to 25 meters. I
am sure cell companies like nokia, ericssion, motorola, etc. may have some
solution if everybody is talking of location based WAP services.

Hello,

Beside what I do here on the list from 8-5 I'm
the Operations and GIS manager for the Coastal Bend 9-1-1
network.
12 counties, 22 answering points, 15000 sq mi,
1400 miles off *highway* [no cities etc] with Corpus Christi, TX being the
*major* city 300,000 pop.
AND A F-A-S-T GROWING CELL PROBLEM FOR
9-1-1

We are just now upgrading toPhase 1
Wireless as mandates by the US FCC by 31 Oct 2000 which will now give us the
[911 call taker] the cell phone number, name, and *registered* address, this
will be a 10digit ph# to take care of area codes for traveling
phones.

The best location we will get is the cell
company ID,cell tower ID, and Sector [face] which I will put into MI as
provided by the estimated 600 towers that exist[no one really knows
how many there are = 26 sellers of phones in this area].

Phase II mandates the 30 Oct 2002 we will get
location within 100meters 67% of the time. HA-HA
Feds are looking to change this date or
requirements as it has not been successful yet.
Time-Difference-Of-Arrival which triangulates
position works really good here in the hinterland but sucks in the urban
canyon. GPS is capable of being put into the phone but everyone likes
their $19.95 and not having to up that to $
like the Motorola Iridium.

For now if I can say that you need to send help
in the NW area of this location [the tower] - but some of these towers are
35mile omni-directional - it is better that saying *well, we go a cell
call*..

Subject: MI automatically locating
a caller on cellular networks

Hi mappers:
This quewtion is not related much to MI
but more tp cellular telephony. Is it possible to identify the location
of a cellular celluar ( within say 20 to 25 metre accuracy) without the
caller having having a GPS or similar device. Or oes the cellular
switching has any information using which we can track a caller? Any
pointers would be appreciated. I wam sure people in RF planning may have
some answer to it.

MI - Solution to remove an ADDED column

2000-03-23 Thread Ian Allan

Hi,

For those who are interested, here's the solution to my problem.

Anton de Gruchy pointed out that WindowId() is a dynamic identifier not
static. Phew, thanks for that.

My solution was to use the Timer() function to get a unique column name, and
then ADD COLUMN. I have put the unique column name into the window title so
that I can retrieve it later relate it back to the relevant column for the
purpose of export. Using this technique, there is no need to remove the
added column, but of course, a need to be mindful of deteriating performance
after many iterations of the program.

Thanks all

Ian

 Hi

The ADD COLUMN statement allows a new "temporary" column to be created
 for an open table.

In an application I'm writing, I want to give a column the name of the
map window identifier, so that each map window can have a unique
thematic map. The thematic mapping bit works, but only the first time
through. I cant seem to find a way to make an ADD COLUMN created column
either "updateable" or "deletable", other than closing and reopening the
table (I dont want to do this).

 Can anyone help?

 Ian Allan

RE: Text from Word to MI 5.5

2000-03-23 Thread Martin Roundill

Additional Text:

For those that don't know you can actually get the layout to contain a block
of text that is longer than you can manually enter in the text box. This is
achieved by editing the workspace file directly. I haven't sat down to
count but I think the test box lets you enter around 300 characters by
editing the workspace file you can extend it to around 410 characters.
Useful if you just about fit everything in and don't want to mess around
aligning another text box.

Another strange but true fact.

Martin

Just like James, the powerpoint option is the one i have been using for a
while now, and i am very satisfied with the results. All my layouts are
done with it!

 Hi Jeff

There are a couple of options (hacks for you programmers):

 1) Use Word as your layout program - import the map into Word and do your
layout around it. I usually dump it to an image using File | Save Window
As
but it is also possible to copy the map window and paste it as an OLE
object. To get a higher resolution of the image you export, specify an
image
width of about 3 times the final size when using the File | Save Window As
 command.

 Good luck!
