Re: MI Center X Y in meters

save your table using "save as copy...", the dialog will prompt for a new name
for the copy and the "projection"button will allow you to assign any metric
projection like UTM instead of Lat/long.

Normally, MapInfo-L produces about 30 messages a day or so, so when you
aren't getting mail with "MI" in the subject line, something's not working.

During the last virus scare, many servers were refusing mail, and since I
couldn't tell if the bounced mail from these was just temporary or
permanent, several people were unsubscribed. When servers stop relaying
MapInfo-L mail they just bounce mail back to my mailbox and fill it up, so I
if your server stops handling mail for a couple of days, you're automatcally
taken off MapInfo-L (I can't tell if your server is broken or if you have
abandoned your mailbox.) Anyway, you stop getting mail, so if this is not
what you want, just resubscribe. All the information about MapInfo-L is
available at http://www.directionsmag.com/mapinfo-l.

Sorry for any inconvenience, but it goes with the territory!

MI GeoTIFFs

2000-05-18 Thread Mike Glynn

Hi everyone

I am having a problem creating GeoTiff files.to do this i
am using the geotifcp executable which can be got from
libgeotif
ultimately i am trying to get the geotiffs into
MapInfo
My metadata file looks lie this:

Geotiff_Information: Version:
1 Key_Revision: 1.0
Tagged_Information: ModelTiepointTag
(6,3):

GTRasterTypeGeoKey (Short,1):
RasterPixelIsArea ProjectedCSTypeGeoKey
(Short,1): PCS_British_National_Grid
End_Of_Keys. End_Of_Geotiff.

however once the geotif is created the MapInfo (5.5) Georeg
utility complains that my control points all lie on the same
line
i have succesfully registered read a geotif in mapinfo which
used one control point and x and y pixel scales but i would prefer to use three
control points if possible.

has anyone had any experience of Geotiffs? Or can anyone at
MapInfo confirm that MI cannot read geotiffs which have used three control
points in this way..i have a read a few articles on the internet (http://www.remotesensing.org/geotiff)
by people who have been using other software which can read geotifs but do not
support this 3 control point technique...

any help would be really appreciated and i will summarise the
problem when i have solved it.

Cheers

MI Extracting Intersection Point Computation of Distances

2000-05-18 Thread Michael Tang

Dear Experts,

As I am pretty new with Mapinfo, I would be grateful if you can share your views on
this matter.

Problem:

I have a layer with close polygons (e.g. Layer A) and another layer of just straight
lines (e.g. Layer B). If we overlay the two layers, these polylines will pass through
the polygons or rather cuts through the boundary of the polygon in two locations.

Question:

Is there any way which I can "request" mapinfo to extract all the
cross-over/intersection points (doesn't matter if it is lat/lons or grids) and also
measure the distance from the start of the line to the intersections points?

Any advice or suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Thanking you in advance.

Best regards

MI RE: Data reduction

2000-05-18 Thread Eric Maranne

Althought the Nyquist theorem isn't implemented (I'll have to think of this
one, a bit tricky since one would have to implement a low pass filter after
going thru a Fourier series on polylines segments groups, then back to
regenerate spatial information ... hummm, not really a work for dear old
Mapbasic ...), you may try Topocheck from the MI List FTP site (look at top
downloads ( ... ;) forgive me, it's s good for my little ego...)),
that'll enable you to filter by a combination on two parameters : minimum
distance between points, and maximum / minimum angle between segments. One
drawback ... it's french, but straight forward (well better back up
your table first).
BTW, I'll put an english version on my site, and the list as soon as I'll
find someone with a Mapbasic compiler to recompile the english version
(I'm afraid I gave up MapInfo devs a few years ago, too tired by local MI
reseller - kindof having the 'new version' of MI 6 to 10 month too late
(when there was already a new version in the US ...), and very, very, very
bad partners support (I mean even worse than none !). But that's another
rant.)
I think other tools on the listFTP site will allow you to use a corridor
based simplification.

 Objet:MI: Data reduction

 G'd day all,

For my mapping work I use very detailed polyline and contour data
(amongst others), which have been produced from 1:50,000 scale maps through
digitizing. The line data are extremely finely sampled and hence reproduce
beautifully all curved portions of lines at that scale. However, the
ultimate scale at which my maps will be produced is 1:200,000 or 1:400,000,
a linear reduction of 1 in 4 or even 1 in 8 and the precision of the
original data is therefore way too high for the end product.

Question is: Is anyone aware of a routine through which one can pass the
data files, and which will reduce the data density in such a way that at
the smaller scale the exactness is still maintained. There is a
mathematical rule which says that the spatial sampling frequency is
dictated by the 'curviness' of the sampled line in order to restore the
original curve without aliasing. (The word Nyquist frequency comes to
mind).

Anyone has any thoughts on this??

 TIA
 andre

RE: MI - list problem ?

2000-05-18 Thread Christy Noonan

I agree with all the praise being sent Bill's way.
This MI list has been a tremendous resource.
Thanks Bill for all your hard work and dedication to the list!!

PS Where is that snail mail address, your wine may be in the mail!

MapInfo-L mail they just bounce mail back to my mailbox and fill it up, so
I
if your server stops handling mail for a couple of days, you're
automatcally
taken off MapInfo-L (I can't tell if your server is broken or if you have
abandoned your mailbox.) Anyway, you stop getting mail, so if this is not
what you want, just resubscribe. All the information about MapInfo-L is
available at http://www.directionsmag.com/mapinfo-l.

Sorry for any inconvenience, but it goes with the territory!

MI distance from coordinates

2000-05-18 Thread Archana Jain

If I have x-coord and y-coord for two points on surface of
earth, does anybody know how to calculate the distance between two
points.
Thank You

Archana Jain

RE: FW: MI Distance Query

2000-05-18 Thread Fran Peck

Archana,
This was sent to me a few months ago by Sheila Quan for essentially the same
thing you are asking to do. You may have to play with the sql a little (like
the columns you want to show in your query, etc), but this works great. Good
luck

This is not really difficult, just long:

Dear Fran

If you want crow-fly distance, first create your distance column under table
maintenance table structure. Then update column with "Distance",
"CartesianDistance" (for curved surfaces) or "SphericalDistance" (for
straight surfaces) so your function should look something like this:

Distance(student address coordinate eg Lat, Long, school coordinate eg Lat,
Long, "distance measure")
ie Distance(lat,long,lat,long, "km")

That will work cos I have done in countless times!

Good Luck

Re: MI - list problem ?

2000-05-18 Thread Steve Lackow

It's about time that Bill's effort was properly appreciated by the list
members. He has been of great service to the entire GIS community for more
than 15 years now, and with his BBS was probably the first to make real GIS
content available in cyberspace. He is surely one of our great pioneers,
and has been an inspiration to myself and to many others. He always seems
more than eager to help colleagues, as if that assistance were its own
reward.

  Perry:
I totally agree with your comments on Bill's outstanding efforts. Not
only is it comforting to know the list survives because of his efforts
but his wit and superb diplomacy in mediating disputes are always a
pleasant reminder that difficult jobs don't necessarily require
difficult people to get them done. Bill, your preference, red or white?

MI MapBook Application

2000-05-18 Thread Bob Regier

Hi,
I'm writing a Mapbook application in MapBasic that prints out the roads
in the Township on 8.5 X 11 mapsheets. Part of the information I want
to print on the four sides of each page is the map # of the adjoining
page, as well as the current date.

There must be a way to put that information into a variable and then
printing out the variable, but I haven't found it yet. I am trying to
use the Create Text Statement.

What is the best way to approach this?

thanks,
Bob Regier

Re: MI Workspace Prob...

2000-05-18 Thread Mick

Andre

that error message brings back (not so) fond memories - have you changed any
of the table structures? if you have that could be the problem, the "36" in
the error message is the line number in the workspace file, have a look at
it in a text editor and see what the variable name is, does it correspond to
a field name in the table? if not there's your problem, you can edit the
workspace (insert the valid field name) in the text editor and all should be
well, I once had to do something similar for lots of workspaces

I know very little about Lovebug etc. but I had the same problem a year or
so or go so I suspect it's not related.

hope this helps

cheers

Mick

Subject: MI Workspace Prob...

Ever since the "I Love You" virus hit us, some of our workspaces are not
opening. We are getting messages like...

Workspacename.wor.36) Variable or field ID not defined.

Could this be related to the virus somehow? Or could it be that in
restoring our systems something was changed?

 Any Thoughts???
