[MapServer-users] .symbol file and multiple FONT calls . . .

2022-12-19 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

I'm getting funny error when trying to reference two different FONT files from
inside of the same .SYMBOL file. I have these symbols:

SYMBOL
NAME 'co_highway_front'
TYPE TRUETYPE
FONT 'shields-co'
CHARACTER 'V'
ANTIALIAS TRUE
  END
  SYMBOL
NAME 'co_highway_back'
TYPE TRUETYPE
FONT 'shields-co'
CHARACTER 'U'
ANTIALIAS TRUE
  END

  SYMBOL
NAME 'interstate1_wide_back'
TYPE TRUETYPE
FONT 'shields'
CHARACTER '7'
ANTIALIAS TRUE
  END

  SYMBOL
NAME 'interstate1_wide_front'
TYPE TRUETYPE
FONT 'shields'
CHARACTER '8'
ANTIALIAS TRUE
  END

Whenever I try to reference one of the SYMBOL names that goes to the
'sheilds_co' font I get this error:

http://schemas.opengis.net/wms/1.1.1/exception_1_1_1.dtd>

msLoadMSRasterBufferFromFile(): General error message. unable to open file
/srv/www/datasets/PUBLIC/TRANSPORTATION/STP_CENTERLINE/co_highway_front for
reading

All the symbols work for the 'shields' font. I'm not sure how the SYMBOL NAME
is being passed as a filename to Mapserver either . . .

Here is the .font definitions:

shields ./DDVMN01B.TTF
shields-co ./DDVMN19B.TTF
arial-bold ./ARIALBD.TTF
action ./Action_Bold.ttf
bluehigh./bluehigh.ttf

The two font files in question both open up in the font explorer just fine.

Any thoughts? Thanks. I think I'm missing something simple.

2022-10-12 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
You'll need to set up an index to all those PNG/PGW files. I've done this with
a SHP file in the past as Sven described. There is more than on way to do this
though.

Let me know if you need a MapServer example, I can dig one out for you.

Re: [MapServer-users] "Emergency" map server on Raspberry Pi - raster/PNG source in folder structure

2022-10-12 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
Hi Stefan,

This might help you get started:

https://github.com/klassenjs/rpi-workshop/blob/master/Workshop.org

We've got 7 of these used in the filed now as standalone Webservers, with Wifi
access. No internet required. You just turn it on. You can add in a Battery
and/or connect directly to a 12v power source like the ignition switch for
power from a vehicle, and it's always on.

Real low power and depending on how big a card you use, a lot of data. Our
survey version has over 250k geolocated document scans available.

This is a map based system, but it a whole Server Stack configuration, so
should give you a good head start.

We ran this as a workshop at a OSGeo conference a few years back.

Re: [mapserver-users] [SURVEY] Publishing of Twin Cities, OSGeo Local Chapter Meeting Recordings

2022-07-26 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
Hi Seth,

I did find that OSGeo Channel, but didn’t think it was right to mix things
without asking. Also, I’m not 100% on whether they should be mixed or not,
unless some sort of naming scheme can be arrived at for filtering for either
group. I would assume that over time, others might want to also add in for
example.

I’m willing to learn/figure out the YouTube stuff (never done it before), which
is a desire of my own, but I’m open to other approaches. I have some other
legacy stuff stashed away from older local meetings too, as I’m sure others do
in our group. Not sure this historical stuff would be of interest to everyone.
I was also planning on putting a little editing effort into setting up title
cards for the uploads as well, normal youTube stuff . . .

Think Before You Click: This email originated outside our organization.

Hi Bob,

There is an OSGeo YouTube channel at
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDvJEf8hXbyeVqaYaS8sLvw that could be used?
I'd like to highlight a couple of the MapServer related talks at the MapServer
summary talk next month at FOSS4G if possible. As you mention, the
presentations linked to at
https://www.osgeo.org/local-chapters/twin-cities-mn-usa-chapter/ are currently
offline, so +1 from myself.

2022-07-13 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
Jim,

I’ve asked a few times on the Discuss list. Originally they were using Vimeo,
but I think they changed their usage rules, and there was some discussion about
where to move stuff to.

Either way, I’ve not gotten and suggestions about where to publish videos. I
can try again.

My comment is to first coordinate with OSGeo as there is already likely an
established process/location for this sort of thing.

[mapserver-users] [CANCELLING] Twin Cities, OSGeo Local Chapter Meeting for Jul 13th, 2022

2022-07-13 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

No volunteers have come forward for presenting later today, so I’m canceling
the meeting for this month.

As always, looking for presenters for this monthly meetings. Can be anything
Geo-related. Just send me a Bio and presentation title and I’ll handle the
rest.

Our next meeting will be August 10th (Second Wednesday of the month)

Time: 4:30 – 6:00

Note/group survey: I have the last couple of presentations ready to publish,
but my online service is a bit flaky, so trying to figure out a new location.
I’m wondering about posting the presentations to a You-Tube Channel.

I’ll send out a survey for this right after this Email.

Bobb

All,

Haven’t heard back from anyone yet for a volunteer presenter for our next
meeting tomorrow. I don’t have anything in the can from myself, and only have
a few current projects that are only half completed and not ready for showing
off to anyone (yet). The summer sessions have always been harder to fill out,
so not really surprising to me.

I’ll leave the invitation open until tomorrow mid-day, at which time, if I
don’t get a volunteer, I’ll cancel the meeting for this month.

Bobb

All,

Looking for presenter for upcoming virtual, Local OSGeo Chapter meeting.

Just send me a Presenter Bio and Title for a presentation on anything Geo, and
I’ll handle the rest.

When July 13th, 4:30 pm CDT

Thanks

Just got the idea from looking at Mapfile that Lars sent me here, that uses

to draw the extensions lines though, maybe a zero length solid translate . . .
hmmm.

Re: [mapserver-users] Question on Feature Use

2022-01-14 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

We’ve used this in the past , and to some extent still do, but it’s on the
fringe right now.

One thing though, I always looked at this as a backup method to get something
working when everything else didn’t work as well as some debugging of calls.

I use it mostly when trying to integrate more than one service together, or
need to call a MapService from something like PERL for example. It’s not
something I generally depend on anymore, but I did cut my teeth on the
capability while learning MapServer configuration steps, etc.

Think Before You Click: This email originated outside our organization.

Hi all: This is in regard to
https://mapserver.org/cgi/controls.html#changing-map-file-parameters-via-a-form-or-a-url
 – we’re seriously thinking about dropping this functionality as part of 8.0.
It’s just not as relevant as in the past with improvements runtime
substitutions and SLD. This will allow us to simplify the code related to
mapfile processing a good bit and just make things easier to maintain in the
long run. I am curious if and how folks are using this feature – just to
identify high-value use cases that we might need to address.

We (Jim) went a little different route here, we read the ESRI rest service and
stuff everything into a Postgres database as a cache and work against that. We
can set whatever EPSG that we need to this way for interoperability.

Re: [mapserver-users] msCGILoadMap(): Web application error. CGI variable "map" is not set

2021-11-15 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
Does that MAPFILE actually exist in that location on the server:

map=/ms4w/apps/tutorial/htdocs/example1-1.map

If it does, then you may have a config/permissions problem on the (root of the)
server. Mac OS has it’s own web service for example and it sometimes takes a
little fiddling to get add-on working.

Mac OS 11.6.1
Mapserver 7.6.4. Homebrew install

Working my way through the tutorial. Going slow a lot of permission issues.

The Mapserver is running I go the no query response when I access from the
server.

Trying to run the first example
//localhost/cgi-bin/mapserv?%20map=/ms4w/apps/tutorial/htdocs/example1-1.map=states=map

Getting error in subject line above.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

All,

Last month’s meeting, from Damon Nelton on the MN EPC Underground Utilities
Mapping Project Team (
UUMPT
) sparked a lot of thought and questions, and It worked very well as a
rehearsal for the Mn GIS/LIS. Those presentations should be posted any day
now, and I’ll get a link out to you all when it’s available. As always, last
month’s presentation has been posted, along with all the previous ones, at the
link at the bottom of this page.

This month will be a follow-on presentation by Steve Swazee, a coordinating
member of the UUMP team.

Title: Begging for Your Assistance to Help Save Lives

Stephen Swazee Sr.

Steve is a retired Navy Captain and former Delta Air Lines 747 pilot who chairs
the Emergency Preparedness Committee of the Minnesota Geospatial Advisory
Council (MGAC). In 2008, he was one of the founding members of the Twin Cities
based geospatial research and development nonprofit SharedGeo, and for the past
13 years has served as its volunteer Executive Director. He also serves on the
Public X Y Mapping Project Board of Directors and was previously a member of
the Minnesota Geospatial Advisory Council, the Geospatial Information and
Technology Association (GITA) Board of Directors, and for six years was GITA’s
Administrative Director.

Based on more than three years of discussions with the Minnesota underground
utilities sector, in 2020, Steve was instrumental in the formation of the
nation’s first effort to work on creating a comprehensive, accurate,
visualization of all buried infrastructure in a state. Known as the Minnesota
Underground Utilities Mapping Project Team, this ground-breaking, multi-year
project has now reached a point where it desperately needs the assistance of
the open source community to solve one of the world’s most vexing geospatial
problems. In what will be a dynamic, back-and-forth discussion you won’t want
to miss, come find out why Steve is down on his knees, begging for your
assistance.

All,

Last month’s meeting, while it technically happened, didn’t amount to too much
cross pollination, since there were only two of us that showed up. :c). We
did get rained out at the end with a short lived sun shower.

No matter. This month I have a virtual Presentation for the group related to
the EPC/
UUMPT
group I’m a part of. Some more info available
here in Video meeting
recordings. We’re just starting back up from the Summer hiatus and the work
going on in this group I think will be interesting to a number of, if not most
of you.

I’m going to try and get Damon Nelton, another member of the EPC/UUMPT group,
to tag team on this presentation with me as a rehearsal for the GIS/LIS meeting
where we’ll be presenting something similar. Not sure yet if he can be ready

Re: [mapserver-users] CSS in a WMS GetFeatureInfo request

2021-08-12 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
James,

Thanks for the reply. The reason I need to have the CSS in the return is that I
want to use Variable substitution inside the CSS from the template. I need to
style some stuff from the TEMPLATE call and attributes from the DB.

My next try was going to be with inline Styles, but for some reason DIV tags
are not being passed through the TEMPLATE call, need to figure that out first
I think, maybe there is a way around requiring DIVs

[mapserver-users] NULL Style. . . .

2021-07-12 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

So this will probably sound weird to start with, but, anyone know how I might
implement a STYLE in a Mapfile as a NULL display, I sort of want to use it like
FILTER/FILTERITEM, but at the STYLE level (Will these work further down in the
STYLE block?). All this is against a SHP file currently, which limits me
somewhat in the FILTERING.

I've got a FILTER/FILTERITEM set at the MAP block, works just as expected, but
I also need to omit display on an additional field at a LAYER>>STYLE block. I
suppose I could use a NOT expression of some sort . . . .

Still pondering . . .

Re: [mapserver-users] connect label to features

2021-06-25 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

My original need for the label lines was for labeling point clusters, I wanted
to see a label for each point. Having said that I understand the reasoning
behind the logic we're seeing. I would suggest that along with "FORCE TRUE"
that some sort of related min-distance (MINLEADERDISTANCE?) type of variable be
added directly related to leader lines and when they come on/off by scale, or
MINDISTANCE working inside s separate STYLE block (Does it work that way now?)
for Leader lines. I think multiple STYLE blocks came after LEADERs . . . .

Hi Luca,

The implemented leader label logic does not turn on leader lines for
every point or feature. (I believe this is what is causing the
confusion, as reported by you and Bob) I personally could see a new
parameter in the LEADER object of "FORCE TRUE" being very useful, but
that would take a champion to file a new ticket
(https://github.com/MapServer/MapServer/issues), create a small test
case (use yours, but also include the symbolset and fonts that your
mapfile references, so a developer can just execute shp2img
out-of-the-box), and then nudge/test/give feedback throughout the whole
development process.

Hope that explains more what is happening.

Re: [mapserver-users] anti-aliasing (was differing image size with different mapserver versions)

2021-05-18 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

I know the GD stuff has been a long running conversation in the MapServer
realm, but does this indicate that maybe discussing something on adding GD back
in might be prudent? Or are there methods to get down to these previous files
sizes with the newer approaches?

I have the same concerns related to image size from the performance side, and
running on Mobile in our case.

To: "mapserver-users@lists.osgeo.org"
Subject: [mapserver-users] anti-aliasing (was differing image size with
different mapserver versions)

Think Before You Click: This email originated outside our organization.

Thanks to several helpful replies to my previous thread I know that the
increased image size between MapServer 6 with the GD driver and MapServer 7
with the AGG driver is due to differences in anti-aliasing (and lack of) in the
two drivers. (AGG features anti-aliasing and sub-pixel
resolution).

Gamma setting from 0-1 affects the size of a filled polygon layer by a factor
of almost 3x. But gamma has no effect on text, lines, and polygon outlines. So
images comprised of these types of features are approximately 2x larger with
the AGG/PNG8 driver than with the GD/GIF driver.

Where else should I be looking to reduce my images sizes? I serve rural areas
with poor internet so in my case, smaller image sizes are more important than
higher quality images.

Thanks,
Rich

2021-05-11 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

A good presentation by Perry N. last month on Drones and Open Source software.
Lot’s of interest on the topic too. Re-live the presentation from the recording
that is posted at the link below.

Upcoming Meeting:

Title: Howard Bulter – Headless OpenDroneMap in the Cloud

Description: Howard Butler will present how to use the Serverless framework
and AWS to create a data-driven S3 bucket that manages ODM processing. By
combining AWS Batch, S3, Lambda, and Docker, one can construct a piece of cloud
infrastructure that handles the task of processing drone imagery into ODM
products such as orthophotos, point clouds, and meshes. Users are notified via
email upon completion or failure of the job, and compute resource management is

2020-05-11 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
LAST REMINDER!! Remember to send your email for the invite/password.

All,

So, the last meeting was interesting in that we went virtual with it for the
first time. All in all it worked out very well. We even had a few out of
towners show up. We presented a couple of short presentations that seemed to be
of interest to the group based on the questions raised.

Operator error (on my part) prevented me from recording anything from the last
meeting, I forgot to hit the record button, so no pictures , not even a
screenshot. I'll attempt to do better this time around. We can still add a
second presentation if anyone is interested, just let me know, or raise the
topic at the meeting

I'm liking the capabilities that Jitsi allows, but I also don't want the group
to get bombed while a meeting is in progress. Still learning how to best
secure the meeting. Until I figure out the basics on this, can I have everyone
interested in attending send me their email address in order to send out the
Jitsi meeting invite directly, vs announcing on the lists, which seems to be a
no-no? Looking into some sort of Web based distro of the invite that folks
would need to login to. But maybe someone out there has a better idea??

The May meeting will feature a guest speaker,

Michael Battaglia (mjbat...@mtu.edu) -
Bio.

A blurb from Michael about the presentation:

"Coastal wetlands are a critical component of the Great Lakes ecosystem.
Fluctuating lake levels, anthropogenic activity, and invasion by non-native
vegetation have led to rapid changes to these valuable, yet fragile, wetland
areas. Frequent monitoring is necessary to understand where and when changes
are occurring, however, field visits are costly and time consuming. Techniques
leveraging spaceborne synthetic aperture radar data enable timely remote
monitoring of a variety of important variables, including wetland type and
inundation extent. This talk will show methods used to generate map products
for those parameters and share results generated with RADARSAT-2 SAR data for
several pilot sites around the Great Lakes.

[mapserver-users] NOTICE: May 13, 2020 - OSGeo Local Chapter Virtual Meeting (aka TCMUG)

2020-04-27 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)

Duration: approx.. 30 min.

Re: [mapserver-users] Make PROJECTION mandatory?

2020-04-27 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

I can second Steve’s idea. We were using Mapserver for years before we needed
to pay attention to projections, because all of our data wasin our local
coordinate system. We now work projection across all map services for all
layers, either by explicitly stating the projection or having it scripted at
the web server call. Some cases it won’t matter, if ever, and others it will
be instrumental in getting a site working with many and varied projected
datasets being combined.

I would agree that it should be a topic more prominently displayed/noted in the
documentation.

Think Before You Click: This email originated outside our organization.

I would prefer to pursue as a documentation/communication exercise first. It's
not that I don't agree that PROJECTION blocks are generally recommended but
making them required and introducing artificial projections to deal with cases
when projections aren't used (embedded legends, scale bars and other static map
elements) will touch a lot of code. It's also a major breaking change that
would potentially break a large percentage of mapfiles going forward.

I personally consider defining PROJECTION blocks at the MAP level and
all LAYERs mandatory, in my day-to-day work, for each and every mapfile.
If you do not specify all of these, MapServer makes assumptions and
you are just asking for trouble downstream through WMS clients etc.
(your users)

I also do not rely on any PROJECTION AUTO magic either, for my paying
clients.

These are all nice tricks but in critical production environments I stay
away from them; instead, find the source projection, and define the MAP
projection block and all LAYER projection blocks.

I'm not sure this answers your questions, but this was my 'gut reaction'
to your message. I believe we have the same thinking here.

All,

Just a reminder about the monthly meeting tomorrow at 4:30pm. Still looking
for co-presenters, anyone, anyone . . .

I may lock down meeting a bit to start out. This is based on some of the stuff
I've been advised about on the topic of people bombing meetings. As a
consequence, I've changed the meeting Password. Just email for it and I'll
send it out individually.

Anyway, live and learn.

Thanks. And see you there.

Hello all,

Sorry about not getting this out sooner. Been a little preoccupied, and was
trying to figure out what to send out for the next meeting anyway.

We had a real good meeting last month. Check it out
here<https://www.dropbox.com/s/wguffhu5ghyp234/20200311_171045_holmans_table.jpg?dl=0>.
  Largest group in a while.

This month we're going online, for obvious reasons. I'm going to run a Zoom
meeting and we'll see where/how it goes. Please be ready to join with your
video on if possible. The idea is to see everyone.

I want to get a few of you to help out by presenting for 20 min or so on
something you've been working on that might be of interest to the group. I'll
start off by volunteering to do a 20min session.

I've set up an Agenda as a shared Doc
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DRhNJL0lrm8VT86uUzH5FHdU9L647AluK49BXEQIo-Y/edit?usp=sharing>
in Google Drive. And added myself to the presenter list. Looking for two
more presenters for 20min presentations. Also add in any other items to the
agenda you think pertinent.

We'll be starting up on time no matter what, so don't be late. See you there.

[mapserver-users] Embedbed Web form on a Map.

2020-03-09 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
Hi,

Was wondering if anyone has seen/built an example of embedding (or overlaying)
a web form on top of a map.

Basically I want to be able to edit attributes of a feature right in the map.
Click the feature, and a form appears related to the actual feature. Labels
/FORM elements follow a polyline for example.

My first aplication will apply some Address range setting form elements to each
end of a line for editing. I’ve already figured out how to display the
elements in a raster output through Mapserver, but still pondering the web
(edit) form aspects.

Some initial thoughts:

  * Could a output template be devised to output a rotated (CSS) web form
with the approriate pixel spacing of the elements right from Mapserver. I think
so, even so far as rotating individual form elements in the result. Seems like
a bit of an uphill battle though . . .
  * Could a LandScape/Portrait FORM have a rotated background image applied
to it, based on the preplanned end point locations on the map. This actually
seems the quickest to implement, but I wonder if it helps at all with other
feature types, or if it would be specific to this first need. It would be nice
to implement a method for any feature type for example, like being able to edit
the edges of a polygon.

My first need:

[***] = FORM elements (attributes for editing)

[min_left_add] [street_name][max_left_add]
O - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - O
   <— line representation
[min_right_add] [street_type] [max_right_add]

or

   O
 [max_left_add]|[max_right_add]
   |
   |
   |
   |
  [street_name]|[street_type]
   |
   |
   |
   |
 [min_left_add]|[min_right_add]
   O

Anyway still pondering . . . .

[mapserver-users] REMINDER: OSGeo Local Chapter (aka TCMUG) Meeting

2019-12-10 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
Hello,

Had a good time at Dual Citizen Brewery last meeting. New faces (and stories)
about GIS.
All
 present had a good time.

The next meeting will be at Black Stack
Brewery.

See you there.

NOTE: Don’t worry about feeling left out if you aren’t a big drinker. I'm not
a big drinker either. It’s all good, and everyone's welcome.
