Last month’s meeting, from Damon Nelton on the MN EPC Underground Utilities 
Mapping Project Team ( 
UUMPT 
) sparked a lot of thought and questions, and It worked very well as a 
rehearsal for the Mn GIS/LIS.  Those presentations should be posted any day 
now, and I’ll get a link out to you all when it’s available.  As always, last 
month’s presentation has been posted, along with all the previous ones, at the 
link at the bottom of this page.

This month will be a follow-on presentation by Steve Swazee, a coordinating 
member of the UUMP team.

Title: Begging for Your Assistance to Help Save Lives

Stephen Swazee Sr.

Steve is a retired Navy Captain and former Delta Air Lines 747 pilot who chairs 
the Emergency Preparedness Committee of the Minnesota Geospatial Advisory 
Council (MGAC).  In 2008, he was one of the founding members of the Twin Cities 
based geospatial research and development nonprofit SharedGeo, and for the past 
13 years has served as its volunteer Executive Director. He also serves on the 
Public X Y Mapping Project Board of Directors and was previously a member of 
the Minnesota Geospatial Advisory Council, the Geospatial Information and 
Technology Association (GITA) Board of Directors, and for six years was GITA’s 
Administrative Director.

Based on more than three years of discussions with the Minnesota underground 
utilities sector, in 2020, Steve was instrumental in the formation of the 
nation’s first effort to work on creating a comprehensive, accurate, 
visualization of all buried infrastructure in a state.  Known as the Minnesota 
Underground Utilities Mapping Project Team, this ground-breaking, multi-year 
project has now reached a point where it desperately needs the assistance of 
the open source community to solve one of the world’s most vexing geospatial 
problems.  In what will be a dynamic, back-and-forth discussion you won’t want 
to miss, come find out why Steve is down on his knees, begging for your 
assistance.

Last month’s meeting, while it technically happened, didn’t amount to too much 
cross pollination, since there were only two of us that showed up.  :c).  We 
did get rained out at the end with a short lived sun shower.

No matter.  This month I have a virtual Presentation for the group related to 
the EPC/ 
UUMPT 
group I’m a part of.  Some more info available

recordings.  We’re just starting back up from the Summer  hiatus and the work 
going on in this group I think will be interesting to a number of, if not most 
of you.

I’m going to try and get Damon Nelton, another member of the EPC/UUMPT group, 
to tag team on this presentation with me as a rehearsal for the GIS/LIS meeting 
where we’ll be presenting something similar.   Not sure yet if he can be ready 
before next Wednesday though, in which case I’ll tackle it on my own.

face to face after 15 months.   Talked about all sorts of stuff too.  I did not 
remember to take a photo of the group, sorry about that.   Also, looking for a 
presenter for this  upcoming meeting 15-20 min presentation.

We decided at the last meeting to switch things up a bit in order to try and 
preserve the virtual aspect, and remote access of our meetings as well as start 
up again with our face to face meet ups.   So, we’re going to run a Virtual 
meeting ahead of the face to face.

Date: Aug 11th.

Description:  Howard Butler will present how to use the Serverless framework 
and AWS to create a data-driven S3 bucket that manages ODM processing. By 
combining AWS Batch, S3, Lambda, and Docker, one can construct a piece of cloud 
infrastructure that handles the task of processing drone imagery into ODM 
products such as orthophotos, point clouds, and meshes. Users are notified via 
email upon completion or failure of the job, and compute resource management is 
delegated to AWS Batch.
