[libreoffice-marketing] WhatsNew dialog on first start of a new version

2024-02-15 Thread Heiko Tietze
If we publish a new version we inform the user via infobar and ask to read the
release notes. Besides the issue of stacked infobars, this information and the
presentation is not really suited for end users. On the other hand, we always
prepare awesome best-of videos, yet not everyone follows us on social media.

The idea is to simply show a dialog with a few images combined with a short
text, arranged in a carousel with next/previous buttons.

The challenges are
a) we have to prepare this shortly before a new version goes into feature freeze
b) the localization of some strings can not start earlier
c) the images occupy a couple of bytes locally but are not used after the first
presentation

If you dislike the idea, please comment on
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=159573

Thanks for the idea -- I like it! And it's a great way to encourage people to

Currently we're running the "Month of LibreOffice" campaign, but in December,

[libreoffice-marketing] Mailing list -> Discourse

2023-03-31 Thread Heiko Tietze
I suggest to move the marketing mailing list into a Discourse forum at
https://community.documentfoundation.org/. An example why this makes sense is
the discussion around version 8 running across several mailing lists. Such
discussions could be announced but should run on one place, at Discourse.

The label is part of the brand image, which is shown in the splash screen, the
about dialog, and it was planned for the start center. We alter what has been
defined for TDF at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding#Logos
Meaning it will be likely shown on other places too.

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice branding: shades of grey

2019-07-11 Thread Heiko Tietze
Branding colors are typically static without a variation of grey. Imagine the
Telekom magenta in a pastel tone. Or any other brand color with modification.
But since this question is asked on marketing there might be different opinions
- and we don't need to name our colors a branding.

[libreoffice-marketing] Renaming the "Tabbed" variant of the Notebookbar

2019-05-09 Thread Heiko Tietze
On social media, we refer to "Notebookbar" (and sometimes MUFFIN) but do not
show this word in the UI. So a request was made [1] to rename the variants to
"Tabbed Notebookbar" and "Tabbed Compact Notebookbar". However, Tabbed and
Notebookbar sounds to me non-native speaker like tech-talk and I suggested
"Verbose Catalogues" and "Compact Catalogues" (admittedly not really better).
Another idea was to show MUFFIN with the separator.

So I'm seeking here for more input. Should we change the names and what would
suit both recognizability and simplicity?

Thanks in advance,
Heiko

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] what can I do for... LibreOffice

2018-10-11 Thread Heiko Tietze
On our Get Involved page we list some other categories for contribution (QA,
documentation, marketing). We talked about this site recently as it is not
welcoming. Speaking of design it is not clear to novices what that means (QA/BZ
work with focus on UI/UX, proposals and mockups for improvements, definition of
requirements and guidelines, icons design, creation/selection of images for
various parts in the program, templates etc.), and that we have work for
everyone. I think that has to become clear. Another idea was to show the
picture of the contact person.

[libreoffice-marketing] Default color for shapes

2017-12-18 Thread Heiko Tietze
tl;dr: Change Sky Tango Blue into Light Lime 2 for shapes?

Shapes are painted in blue, probably because this was one of the basic Tango
colors. However, we changed the standard palette recently. And in order to not
show a hex value a lot of sources files needs to get touched. And now I wonder
if we better got with a more LibreOffice'ish green as default color. My
suggestion is Light Lime 2 for the area and Lime for the border. Consequently,
it has also be the color for the shape icons - and wherever we used the blue
before. Little drawback is the typical system blue for highlighted controls
such as toggled buttons or scrollbars, which contradicts with green. Not too
much, IMHO.

Hi Christopher,

you are very welcome in our project. Whether your volunteers are
developers, designers, translators, QA fellows, help authors... we
have teams for all disciplines. Start from
http://www.libreoffice.org/community/get-involved/ to find the how-to
pages at our wiki. Speaking about UX, the start page is
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design with all relevant
information. My advice is to just jump into the cold water and to read
and comment on Bugzilla http://bugs.documentfoundation.org/ (design
related tickets have the keyword needsuxadvice).
As Henry pointed out we also have Spanish speaking communities. A
group was created recently on Telegram
(https://telegram.me/libreoffice_es). The local communities are one of
the main pillars for LibreOffice. CC'ing the marketing about that who
may know details.

Thanks a lot for fostering Open Source,

may I kindly ask again for comments? Whether it's additional input regarding we

Great idea! Easy to name, broad associations, and beautiful artwork

Sounds like a cute virus :-)
(Such a mascot would have the added value of being a massage ball)

As an intermediate state, the metaphors we do have so far:

* Freedom (dove like bird, though occupied by Apache OpenOffice; and
disliked by some)
* Speed/Improvement (fast birds)
* (Smart and not aggressive) Hunter (bird of prey, raptor)
* Intelligence (Weimeraner dog on G+ "good hunter and faithful pet but
requires lots of exercise")
* Openness
* Documents/Wisdom (Owl)
* Cuteness / Seven lives (Big? grumpy? kitten or puppy dog)
* Speed (Horse, though used by EuroOffice; and disliked by some)

That's a pretty good basis for skilled designers. Anything else?

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice Mascot

2017-03-31 Thread Heiko Tietze
Hello all,

additional to the unique branding of LibreOffice today, we want to introduce an
alternative to TDF's trademarked logo/icon elements that can be used by the
community with minimal restrictions: a mascot.

The idea is similar to "Duke" from Java
(https://kenai.com/projects/duke/pages/Home), SuSE's chameleon "Geeko", Mozilla
has a lizard/godzilla/tyrannosaurus, Linux' "Tux" is famous, KDE is going with
the dragon "Konqi" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konqi) and Krita has "Kiki"
(https://krita.org/en/kiki/).

The first step would be to find some metaphors that enables designs to be
creative. Something like Freedom, Documents, Openness etc. Ideas for the
realization are of course also welcome. The mascot could be an animal like a
(grumpy old) cat to refer to the seven lives of LibreOffice or something more
symbolic.

Based on your input we would later start the actual design task, and ideally
have a few options where the community can choose the best.

Cheers,
Heiko

[libreoffice-marketing] System theme or branded theme

2017-03-24 Thread Heiko Tietze
In tdf#106756 [1] the fundamental idea to blend LibreOffice well into the
system theme is challenged. While we may be able to solve most of the issues
the idea is tempting to have a unique look and feel with the possibility to
customize the default according the system. Something like Mozilla does in
Firefox with Auralis [2].

Would be good to get opinions on the ticket.

[libreoffice-marketing] Branding for LibreOffice 6.0

2017-03-20 Thread Heiko Tietze
Hello everyone,

the next major update of LibreOffice is planned for Q1/2018. That makes it
necessary to start the design work now. With the experience from the last
process I want to try something different this time: to ask the Open Source
Design group for a professional visual design
(https://github.com/opensourcedesign). We should request at least two variants
in order to involve our community (despite the fact that we blog with a
reference to OSD and everybody can contribute early), where users choose their
preferred design later. And I would add a tough timeline to the request so that
we can run a plan B if anything fails.

We should also improve ourself on how to start a request. Designers usually
work well with a clear goal and a few constraints, such as metaphors, ideas
around the product etc. And that's what I want to ask for in this mail.

My rough proposal:

Task:
* New motif (Question: Or do we want to keep the triangles rather than moving
forward to hexagons?)
  + Current design
+ https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Visual_Elements
* Applying the motif to new splash screen / banner (661x169px)
  + Current design
+ https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding
  + Previous ideas
+ https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Playground/Splash_screen
+ https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding/Banner_Proposals
* Applying the motif to flyers, stickers etc.
  + Current flyers
+ https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Gallery_Flyers
* (Can we technically introduce a new progress bar and do we want to? There is
a proposal https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:Chin_Zee_Yuen)
* (What else?)

Restriction
* Follow guidelines for colors and branding
  + https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding
* Create at least two ideas that can be presented to the community
* Finish the job until end of July 2017
* Use open data format or at least SVG
(What else?)

Metaphors (i.e. For what stands LibreOffice?)
* Transparency, Sustainability, Freedom
* Community
* MUFFIN
* Green
* Six, hexagon, ...

Any comments are welcome, of course. I understand no reply as silent acceptance
and would start the request by end of this week.

Best wishes,
Heiko

[libreoffice-marketing] Renaming the LibreOffice colors

2016-11-20 Thread Heiko Tietze
Hello marketeers,

the LibreOffice branding colors
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding#Colors do not have good
names but are numbered consecutively. Instead of "Green 1" we should better
call this color "Moss Green". My proposal is in
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104053 (black and white as
well as the accent names could remain). Opinions are welcome.

Cheers,
