US Working With Russia In Syria: Air Forces Hold Joint Training
Exercises

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (left to right), U.S. Secretary
of State John Kerry, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir and Turkish
Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioglu take their seats before a meeting
in Vienna, Oct. 29, 2015. Reuters
U.S. and Russian air forces held a joint training exercise in Syria
Tuesday as part of a larger effort to share intelligence and work
together to combat terror groups amid a four-year-long civil war.
Russian news media also reported Tuesday that Russia and Israel were
informing each other continually on the situation in Syrian airspace.
Few details were known about the joint training exercise, Reuters
reported.
As officials in Washington and Moscow have inched closer toward working
in unison to negotiate a new reality in Syria, a Russian foreign
ministry spokeswoman said Tuesday that it was not a priority to keep
Syrian President Bashar Assad in power. The U.S. and other Western
nations have called for Assad to step down, and accused Russia of
protecting Assad by targeting anti-Assad groups since starting
airstrikes in Syria on Sept. 30.
Asked about protecting Assad's political future, Russian foreign
ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on the Ekho Moskvy radio
station Tuesday: "Absolutely not, we've never said that." "What we did
say is a regime change in Syria could become a local or even regional
catastrophe," she said, adding that "only the Syrian people can decide
the president's fate."
Russia announced in September it would carry out airstrikes aimed at
Islamic State group fighters in Syria at Assad's request. The Russian
defense ministry said Tuesday Russia's air force had flown 1,631 sorties
and struck 2,084 militant targets since the start of the campaign.
Meanwhile, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Moscow would
host a round of talks between Syrian officials and opposition leaders
next week.
Iran, Russia's ally in Syria, has insisted that Assad stay in power.
Russia "may not care if Assad stays in power as we do," the head of Iran’s
Revolutionary Guard Corps, Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari, said
Monday. He added: "We don't know any better person to replace him."
Diplomats representing the United States, its Gulf allies and Turkey
meet in Vienna Friday to discuss efforts in Syria, but failed to reach
agreement on Assad

Russian, US air forces held joint training exercise in Syria:
Colonel-General Kartapolov

Russia’s air force has flown 1,631 sorties and struck 2,084 militant
targets since the start of its air strikes campaign in Syria, the
Russian Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.
Colonel-General Andrei Kartapolov, said that Russian and U.S. air forces
held a joint training exercise in Syria. As part of the training U.S and
Russian forces practised “informing, organisation, collaboration and
information exchange.”
Kartapolov said the Russian air force has it’s operations base at
Hmeymim while the U.S. centre of strategic air operations is in Qatar.
Kartapolov said the joint exercise entailed Russian and coalition jets
practising close encounters in a special zone at a minimum distance of
three aeronautical miles. Crews practised communicating in English and
Russian, he added.
Kartapolov also said Russia and Israel, Syria’s neighbour to the
southwest, were informing each other continually on the situation in
Syrian air space to ensure “flight safety”.
Syria’s skies have become increasingly crowded since Russia on Sept. 30
joined the Syrian air force in bombing insurgent targets, while a
U.S.-led coalition pursues a separate air strike campaign in the country’s
civil war

Those arrested -- apparently not students but backed by a
pro-Palestinian group on campus -- are claiming their free speech rights
were violated. Meanwhile, university officials are saying that the
protest crossed the line past acceptable forms of protest.

And the incident has revived a debate in higher education over use of
the "heckler's veto," in which protesters take their shouts into the
lecture hall. In recent years, there have been major debates over such
incidents at Brown University, Florida Atlantic University and the
University of California at Irvine. (The Florida Atlantic and Irvine
incidents also involved speakers from Israel.)

*A Commitment by South African Scholars to the Rights of Palestinians*

We South African scholars, noting the initiative by more than 600 of our
academic colleagues in the United Kingdom in solidarity with
Palestinians under occupation similarly endorse the commitment on the
rights of Palestinians as published in the Guardian newspaper on the
27^th October 2015.

Details of the commitment can be found at http://www.commitment4p.com

As scholars associated with South African universities, we are also
deeply disturbed by Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian land, the
intolerable human rights violations that it inflicts on all sections of
the Palestinian people, and its apparent determination to resist any
feasible settlement.

Responding to the appeal from Palestinian civil society, we therefore
also declare that we will not:

·accept invitations to visit Israeli academic institutions;

·act as referees in any of their processes;

·participate in conferences funded, organised or sponsored by them, or
otherwise cooperate with them.

We will, however, continue to work with our Israeli colleagues in their
individual capacities and consistent with a shared commitment of our
Israeli colleagues to the position we have outlined in this statement.

We will maintain this position until the State of Israel complies with
international law, and respects universal principles of human rights.

All signatures are in personal capacities.

I wonder why the author speaks only of white workers. Blacks are
suffering much worse. But there are some useful points made nevertheless.

I was one of 54 faculty and staff members arrested yesterday in front of the
headquarters of the City University of NY. We sat down and blocked the
entrances. A few hundred other members of the union — the Professional Staff
Congress — took part in the spirited protest. Governor Cuomo is determined to
impose an austerity contract on the union, as he did with other state unions,
and we are determined not to accept it.

New from Linux Beach:

Are Obama's "boots" in Syria the result of lessons learned in
 Libya?

Rebuilding a viable state after living with the Green Book caricature
of one for four decades is more like rebuilding the ruins that the
Romans left in Libya than something that can be done in a day. For
this reason the /"anti-imperialist"/ Left has been able to make
popular sport of trashing the Libyan revolution. However, I still
think that they got some things right in their revolution.

One of the most important things I always hailed them for holding the
line on was this: Steadfastly refusing NATO boots on the ground even
while accepting NATO air support. This crucial decision meant that
they have been able to avoid many of the harsher influences the
imperialist are likely to have on any revolution. Without a western
military presence on the ground in Libya there was nothing the NATO
forces could do once air operations could no longer be justified but
fly away. Libya is a mess, but it is their mess and they can best
clean it up without imperialist machinations.

I've been saying for a long time that a very specific need for Libyan oil
at the tail end of an economic crisis was the major motivation for NATO
intervention. Thanks for adding to the evidence.

The last three paragraphs of the piece seek to link the declining fortunes
of the white working class to a nativist backlash, in order to explain the
rise in popularity of republicans like Trump. The author states that the
democratic party's emphasis on race and gender, rather than class, is to
blame, as if these categories are mutually exclusive. If we rather adopt
the notion that the color line is indeed the class line, as DuBois argued,
we can see matters a bit more clearly, in my opinion. Of course, that
involves jettisoning the idea of whiteness as a useful social construct.
