Yeah, it's definitely a misrepresentation of Jacobin's editorial line. Gindin
was profoundly and dangerously wrong when he said we should drop the open
borders position, but "liberalized but not open" is different from "heighten
border controls." And it's just disingenuous to present Jacobin as endorsing
Wagenknecht's position given that just last month, they ran something by a
member of Die Linke that rejected Wagenknecht's position as pandering to AFD,
the political establishment, and xenophobic racism:
httpsj/die-linke-germany-sahra-wagenknecht-refugees-afd/

Let's criticize Jacobin when they're wrong (and any accommodation to xenophobia
is obviously wrong), but that doesn't mean distorting the facts in what comes
off as a bad-faith dismissal, to be frank.

This is full of stretches:

"The editors of Jacobin had already announced their intention to press
for more voluble support for border controls, in various contexts and
articles."

This sentences links to the article by Sam Gindin where he says, "To
simply assert the righteousness of fully open borders in the present
context of economic insecurity cannot help but elicit a backlash and
will ultimately do little for refugees and future immigrants". I
completely disagree with Gindin's argument that we shouldn't continue to
stand firmly behind open borders, but his article is not the editors of
Jacobin announcing anything at all.

The same goes for the Die Linke article, proper link:
https://www.jacobinmag.com/2017/02/die-linke-germany-sahra-wagenknecht-immigration-xenophobia-afd/

Thinking these views reflect the opinion of the editors of Jacobin is
wrong. This doesn't mean there shouldn't be push back when they publish
articles we disagree with, they can always do better. Their articles on
Syria are a clear case of publishing absolute shit for a period and then
turning it around.

During the struggle against the white supremacist Apartheid regime in South
Africa, the leading anti-apartheid force, the African National Congress
(ANC), coined the phrase: make the country “ungovernable”. The ANC rejected
apartheid rule as illegitimate, since it excluded the clear majority of the
population from basic rights.

(I have not read the Jacobin article so I am reserving judgement on this.)

The current edition of Jacobin includes the most recent iteration of a
push within social democratic circles and organizations to support
strong border controls in the wake of the US Presidential election. It’s
not only or quite that however.

Since the US is not really lacking in border controls, and since
cheering on what already exists renders Jacobin irrelevant at the level
of existing state policy, it’s impossible to read this is something
other than a call for social democratic parties to align with the far
Right over a support for borders and against current re-alignments
between antifa and anti-racists, since Trump’s election and in
preparation for the next election cycle. It is a telling filial choice.
But they have been nothing if not consistent in their adherence to the
most normative, oikonomic cast of ‘the political,’ on issues of racism
as much as gender and sexuality. Plainly Jacobin have decided to enhance
Breitbart‘s business model with better fonts.

I have been a fan of Bollywood movies for many years. Since they are
geared to ordinary people rather than international film festivals,
there is a premium on story-telling and a disdain for the irony that has
become so dominant in Hollywood films. This is not to speak of the song
and dance routines that punctuate the films, which for me are far more
enjoyable than anything in “La La Land.”

If you are a fan of Bollywood films like me or if you’d like to sample
one of the more interesting examples, I recommend “Irada” that opened
today at the AMC Empire 25 theater in NY. This is a detective story
named that pits its hero Arjun Mishra (Arshad Warsi), who is a
combination of Sherlock Holmes and Lieutenant Columbo, against a
powerful chemical company boss named Paddy Sharma (Sharad Kelkar). Like
probably most chemical companies in India, his is dumping carcinogenic
waste products into the groundwater of Bathinda, a Punjabi city.

Comrades:
The chaos swirling around Trump's latest scandal - the Michael Flynn
communications with Russian intelligence - reveal a president who is
largely out of control of Corporate America. Among other things, while
Trump's claim that he has no (direct) investment in Russia is true, he has
immense financial ties with Russian capitalism. More so than any previous
president in US history, Trump's policies are directly linked to his
personal, financial ties. He's partially abandoning the interests of US
capitalism as a whole. The fact that a US president can do that indicates
an unprecedented situation in US and therefore for world history.

When I received email from a publicist announcing the premiere of a film
based on John Steinbeck’s “In Dubious Battle” directed by and starring
James Franco that opens on Friday, February 17th, I knew at the outset
that this would not be in the same league as John Ford’s 1940
masterpiece “The Grapes of Wrath”. Everything I have heard from Franco
in the past five years or so persuades me that outside of acting he
overestimates his talents, whether it is writing poetry or teaching
classes in the NYU film school. If he wants to become a renaissance man,
it would probably be best for him to stick to projects he is qualified
for, like being named the face of Gucci’s men’s fragrance line.

Like most people I suppose, my knowledge of Steinbeck is based on “The
Grapes of Wrath” and “Of Mice and Men”, a novella I read in high school.
The publicist provided a synopsis of the film: “In the California apple
country, nine hundred migratory workers rise up against the landowners
after getting paid a faction of the wages they were promised. The group
takes on a life of its own—stronger than its individual members and more
frightening.” I said to myself that even if Franco makes a mess of this
Steinbeck story, it would still be worth watching for the subject matter
alone. Guess what. I was wrong.

Steinbeck’s novel was based on historical events. In the early 1930s,
farmworkers in California fought pitched battles with the agribusinesses
we became familiar with in the 1960s when the UFW was fighting to
organize farmworkers in the lettuce fields and grape vineyards.

The earlier strikes were organized by the Communist-led Cannery and
Agricultural Workers Industrial Union (CAWIU). Franco stars as Mac
McLeod, a Communist organizer who has taken raw CP recruit Jim Nolan
(Nat Wolff) under his wing. The two of them head off to the fictional
Torgas Valley, where they begin working at an apple orchard owned by
Bolton, an old-school capitalist pig reminiscent of C. Montgomery Burns
on “The Simpsons”. Not long after starting work, they learn with the
rest of the men that their pay will been cut from 25 to 20 cents per
hour. They can take it or leave it. Robert Duvall, a long-time
Republican outlier in Hollywood, was cast as Bolton. No method acting
preparation was required from someone who belonged to a labor-hating
political party.

Note the "Arab Spring" comparison.

NY Times, Feb. 17 2017
Bild Apologizes for False Article on Sexual Assaults in Frankfurt by
Migrants

By MELISSA EDDY

BERLIN — The German mass-circulation daily Bild has “emphatically”
apologized to its readers for an article that said a “mob” of Arab men
had sexually assaulted women on New Year’s Eve in a Frankfurt
restaurant, after the police said that an investigation had failed to
turn up any evidence.

The accusations carried echoes of genuine attacks on New Year’s Eve a
year earlier, and Nadja Niesen, a spokeswoman for prosecutors in
Frankfurt, said on Thursday that the authorities had opened a
preliminary investigation of two people suspected of fabricating a crime.

In its Feb. 6 report, Bild, the most widely read newspaper in Germany,
quoted Jan Mai, the owner of a cafe in downtown Frankfurt, as saying
that 50 “Arab-looking men” had assaulted women on Dec. 31. It also
quoted a woman it identified only as Irina A., 27, who said she had been
among those who were groped “everywhere” by the men.

The article mirrored a high-profile episode in Cologne a year earlier,
when hundreds of women reported being robbed or sexually attacked on New
Year’s Eve, some by groups of migrants and newly arrived asylum seekers.

The Bild report from Frankfurt was picked up by other outlets and was
widely shared on social media. More than a week later, after the
Frankfurt police and other news organizations cast doubt on the
allegations, Bild conceded that the attacks described in the article
“did not take place,” and it removed the article from its digital platforms.

“The editorial staff of Bild emphatically apologizes for this untrue
report and the allegations that it made against those concerned,” the
newspaper said in a note published online on Tuesday that cited the
police findings and pledged an internal review. “This reporting in no
way reflects the journalistic standards of Bild.”

Bild has a daily circulation of 2.5 million and often sets the tone for
political discussions in Germany, and the decision by prosecutors to
open an investigation reflects broader concerns in the country about the
spreading of false stories and anti-immigrant or anti-European propaganda.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, under whose leadership Germany admitted
890,000 asylum seekers in 2015, is seeking a fourth term this year. Both
she and her refugee policy have been the subjects of false news reports
and base insults, which officials worry are aimed at whipping up fear
and at shifting perceptions before the vote on Sept. 24.

Marcus Pretzell, a member of the far-right party Alternative for
Germany, described the 12 victims of a truck attack on a Christmas
market in Berlin as “Merkel’s dead” on social media.

Separately, a report in the Russian news media claimed that a
Russian-German teenager had been raped by refugees, setting off protests
by Russian-speaking Germans who said they felt unsafe, and spreading to
the highest levels of diplomacy before the accusations were questioned
seriously enough to dampen their spread.

Other newspapers, including the conservative Frankfurter Allgemeine
Zeitung and the left-leaning Taz, had swiftly published articles
questioning the claims in the Russian report. But they were not accepted
as false until the police discovered that the teenager had been with her
boyfriend at the time of the alleged assault.

The Frankfurt police initially disputed the Bild article on the New
Year’s Eve attack, saying that they had no reports of such events that
night. On Tuesday, they said that an investigation of testimony by the
owner of the cafe and by a woman who said she had been assaulted had
failed to turn up any evidence.

“The questioning of the named witnesses led to considerable doubt about
the events described,” the Frankfurt police said in a statement on
Tuesday, adding that they were examining whether those who fabricated
the accusations could be asked to pay for the cost of the investigation.

Mr. Mai could not be reached on Thursday. Both his personal Facebook
page and that of his cafe appear to have been taken down.

NY Times, Feb. 17 2017
E.P.A. Workers Try to Block Pruitt in Show of Defiance
By CORAL DAVENPORT

WASHINGTON — Employees of the Environmental Protection Agency have been
calling their senators to urge them to vote on Friday against the
confirmation of Scott Pruitt, President Trump’s contentious nominee to
run the agency, a remarkable display of activism and defiance that
presages turbulent times ahead for the E.P.A.

Many of the scientists, environmental lawyers and policy experts who
work in E.P.A. offices around the country say the calls are a last
resort for workers who fear a nominee selected to run an agency he has
made a career out of fighting — by a president who has vowed to “get rid
of” it.

“Mr. Pruitt’s background speaks for itself, and it comes on top of what
the president wants to do to E.P.A.,” said John O’Grady, a biochemist at
the agency since the first Bush administration and president of the
union representing the E.P.A.’s 15,000 employees nationwide.

Nicole Cantello, an E.P.A. lawyer who heads the union in the Chicago
area, said: “It seems like Trump and Pruitt want a complete reversal of
what E.P.A. has done. I don’t know if there’s any other agency that’s
been so reviled. So it’s in our interests to do this.”

The union has sent emails and posted Facebook and Twitter messages
urging members to make the calls.

“It is rare,” said James A. Thurber, the director of the Center for
Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University. “I can’t
think of any other time when people in the bureaucracy have done this.”

The campaign is not likely to succeed. Before Friday’s vote, two
Democratic senators, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin III
of West Virginia, announced that they would vote for Mr. Pruitt’s
confirmation, and only one Republican, Susan Collins of Maine, has said
she will oppose him.

But because Civil Service rules make it difficult to fire federal
workers, the show of defiance indicates that Mr. Pruitt will face strong
internal opposition to many of his promised efforts to curtail E.P.A.
activities and influence.

“What it means is that it’s going to be a blood bath when Pruitt gets in
there,” said Christine Todd Whitman, a Republican former governor of New
Jersey and the E.P.A. administrator during the first term of President
George W. Bush.

Ms. Whitman predicted a standoff between career employees and their
politically appointed bosses, noting that Mr. Pruitt would be blocked by
legal Civil Service protections from immediately firing longtime
employees, but would probably be able to retaliate in other ways, such
as shifting them to different jobs.

The showdown could embolden the White House and Congress to change
federal Civil Service laws.

“The Civil Service is supposed to be a class of experts implementing
policy, regardless of politics,” said Myron Ebell, a fellow at the
free-market Competitive Enterprise Institute, who led Mr. Trump’s
environmental transition team. “If they have now become a special
interest group pleading their own agenda, then it is probably time to
look at reforming the Civil Service laws.”

The revolt has also angered supporters of Mr. Pruitt.

“There clearly has been an organized effort to demonize Pruitt, and I
think that’s unfair and unfortunate,” said Jeffrey Holmstead, a senior
E.P.A. official in the George W. Bush administration who has been
mentioned as a possible deputy to Mr. Pruitt. “I don’t remember, in my
time, anything like this. But I think that anyone Trump nominated would
be targeted.”

“We know that he’ll dismantle Clean Power Plan and the Waters of the
U.S. rule, but he’s not going to go in there and start firing people,”
said Mr. Holmstead, referring to Obama regulations on climate change and
water pollution.

Mr. Pruitt, the attorney general of Oklahoma, has sued the E.P.A. at
least 14 times, often in concert with the nation’s largest fossil fuel
companies, to block major environmental regulations. He has questioned
human-caused global warming and is a key architect of the national legal
effort to dismantle former President Barack Obama’s climate change policies.

He has harshly criticized the role of the federal agency, saying much of
its authority should be dissolved and left to the states. Mr. Pruitt’s
legal views on environmental protection broadly, and the role of the
E.P.A. specifically, appear to line up with Mr. Trump’s campaign claim
that “Environmental Protection, what they do is a disgrace.”

Within days of Mr. Pruitt’s swearing-in, Mr. Trump is expected to sign
one or more executive orders aimed at undoing Mr.

On the one hand, it's crucial to have a concrete, nuanced analysis of the
State. For instance last night Joseph Daher mentioned the structural
differences between the states and their various regimes in Egypt and
Syria, and how that helped explain (without absolutely determining) the
disparate fortunes of Mubarak/Sisi and Assad.
Such an analythical method has nothing to do with the Russophile assumption
among "peace" activitsts that every act and word by Trump opponents high
and low is proof of a "Deep State" conspiracy.

Tonight, I attended a town hall meeting featuring John Zody, the utterly
uninspiring and banal Chairman of the Indiana Democratic Party. The
meeting was as informative and inspiring as it was frustrating and sad.
Without doubt, the Indiana Democratic Party is in serious trouble. In a
county that’s 48% people of color, less than five of the 65 folks in
attendance were black or brown.

Honestly, I actually feel bad for the party and its die-hard supporters.
That’s no bullshit. They’re so fractured and disorganized it’s almost
unbelievable. For instance, the so-called leaders of the Lake County
Democrats were too busy drinking Budweisers at the VFW bar to even pay
attention to what most of their constituents were saying. That’s the
level of respect the Democratic Party gives its people.

Mark Lopez, the top aide for Rep. Pete Visclosky (D-IN), spent the night
walking around the room, making sly remarks under his breath, and
shaking hands with the local drunks and criminals who operate the party
at the county level. If you don’t know the history of the Democratic
Party in Chicago or Lake County, Indiana, please, do some our research.

At this point, I’m convinced that anyone who thinks they’re going to
reform the Democratic Party is not only wrong, they are completely out
of touch with reality. The Democratic Party resembles a walking zombie
that doesn’t even realize it’s dead yet. That’s how bad tonight was, at
least in terms of what people should expect for the future of the
Indiana Democratic Party.
