Patrick, noone cast doubt on the memo. The problem is the interpretation:
the Mintpress article, and the conspiracist universe, decided it was an
email from Clinton. But it was an email to Clinton. I gave the link to the
public article by James Rubin. There is no evidence that it was Clinton's
view; she never argued that way, loet alone acted that way in office.
Wikileaks can only reveal the memos etc. The significance we need to
determine case by case. As I said, this was one of probably 10s of 1000s of
policy suggestions sent *to* politicians in power, not a message *from* one
of them.

Comrades, on this general point of whether material on Wikileaks is
reliable, surely we start with that presumption?

On the general point of whether a U.S. State Department cable or email
that Assange has opened up for the world to see is valuable, surely this
is one of the great windows into contemporary imperialism? I use the
State Dept cables and emails occasionally and encourage others in
academia and anti-imperial activism to, as well (for some reason, most

Assange has pointed out). We should all be enormously grateful to

On the specific question of how to interpret a given State Department

sure, if there were competing interpretations from other forces within

The article in the conspiracist tabloid Mintpress begins by saying that
this Wikileaks "Clinton email" "has not gotten the attention it deserves."
Small wonder, since anybody seriously interested at the time it was
published would have done about 10 minutes research and found it wasn't an
email by Clinton, but an email to Clinton, like 1000s of emails with policy
suggestions and advice that circulate each year, the overwhelming majority
of which wind up in obscurity or the trash.

Here's the original; it was actually a little more public than most,
because James Rubin published it in Foreign Policy:
https://foreignpolicy.com/2012/06/04/the-real-reason-to-intervene-in-syria/

If Clinton had held those views, she could have said so. Instead, in that
same year (2012) she was more interested in claiming that to arm the rebels
would effectively be supporting "al-Qaida," and Hamas, which “is now
supporting the opposition.” If “you're trying to figure out do you have the
elements of an opposition that is actually viable, that we don't see.”

But imagine, Mintpress spreading untruths and conspiracist rubbish! Surely
never!

As the US government shutdown enters its third week, almost a million
workers have been sent home or are working without a paycheck. “Essential
employees” – about 420,000 – are working without pay. Another 380,000 have
been placed on unpaid leave. Millions more may be impacted as “business as
usual” grinds to a halt in sectors touched by the shutdown.

The Congress, on a long weekend break, continues to be paid. In fact, top
government officials will be given a ten thousand dollar a year raise in
pay, which was not automatically frozen. This on top of six figure salaries
and matching perks: limos, expense accounts, etc.

The president is, as usual. . .

 Critical Theory and Authoritarian Populism
Jeremiah Morelock (ed.)

After President Trump’s election, BREXIT and the widespread rise of
far-Right political parties, much public discussion has intensely focused
on populism and authoritarianism. In the middle of the twentieth century,
members of the early Frankfurt School prolifically studied and theorized
fascism and anti-Semitism in Germany and the United States. In this volume,
leading European and American scholars apply insights from the early
Frankfurt School to present-day authoritarian populism, including the Trump
phenomenon and related developments across the globe. Chapters are arranged
into three sections exploring different aspects of the topic: theories,
historical foundations, and manifestations via social media. Contributions
examine the vital political, psychological and anthropological theories of
early Frankfurt School thinkers, and how their insights could be applied
now amidst the insecurities and confusions of twenty-first century life.
The many theorists considered include Adorno, Fromm, Löwenthal and Marcuse,
alongside analysis of Austrian Facebook pages and Trump’s tweets and
operatic media drama. This book is a major contribution towards deeper
understanding of populism’s resurgence in the age of digital capitalism.

_Modern Spain and the Sephardim _presents a historical and
anthropological study of the relationship and attitudes of modern
Spain toward Sephardic Jews. This publication contributes greatly to
the breadth of contemporary Sephardic scholarship by dedicating
several chapters to relatively unknown subjects, such as the Jewish
community in Barcelona and the treatment of Sephardic Freemasons in
Spain. _Modern Spain and the Sephardim _is based on research
completed as part of Maite Ojeda-Mata's doctoral studies at the
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. In 2012 she published a
monograph, _Identidades ambivalentes: Sefardíes en la España
contemporánea_ (Ambivalent identities: Sephardim in contemporary
Spain), whose content has been updated, expanded, and reorganized for
the present publication. _Modern Spain and the Sephardim _is one of
the first books to examine the historically discriminatory
sociopolitical narratives that influenced Spanish relations with
Sephardic Jews in light of the recent Re-Patriation Law 12/2015 that
appears to offer Spanish citizenship to Sephardim.

Ojeda-Mata uses the phrase "legitimizing identities" as a point of
departure (p. xviii). She proposes that during the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries, Spain, as a locus of political and economic
control, used different propagandistic narratives to control
Sephardic Jews, either by emphasizing their Jewish identity or by
highlighting the commonality of Spanish heritage. As the title of her
2012 monograph suggests, the cultural "ambivalence" of the projected
identity of Sephardic Jews could work to their advantage or
disadvantage. The six chapters of _Modern Spain and the Sephardim_
present different case studies in which these legitimizing factors
were in play, and the epilogue analyzes how the ideology of
legitimization underpins the Re-Patriation Law 12/2015.

Chapter 1 discusses how Spain was influenced by the humanitarian
ideals of Romanticism in its view and treatment of other races. This
chapter provides a brief but accurate summary of Romanticism, Jewish
Haskalah (Enlightenment), and Hannah Arendt's observations on pariah
and parvenu. Ojeda-Mata contextualizes the Sephardic assimilation or
lack thereof in terms of established thought regarding Jewish
integration and emancipation in the rest of Europe. Spanish dogma
tended to classify Sephardim as Jews who had an Iberian essence that
improved their Jewish heritage. In the past, physical characteristics
were used to determine race, but Romantic ideals added linguistic
traits, religion, and cultural affinity in an attempt to determine
what right Sephardim had to be included as ethnically Iberian.
Ojeda-Mata states that while Spanish qualities were generally seen to
improve Jews, Jewishness was seen to harm Spanish essence. One
excellent aspect of this chapter is that it provides a table with
legal policies regarding Jews, starting in 1492 and continuing all
the way to the present constitution.

Chapter 2 expands on the themes of the first chapter and looks at how
they applied to the case of Morocco and the eastern Mediterranean.
When Spain became anxious about the French influence pervading North
Africa, intellectuals like Ángel Pullido advocated for the
incorporation of "stateless Spaniards" (as he called the Sephardim)
who were faithful to Spain and "civilized" (p. 53). His
philo-Sephardic campaign had some success and found supporters in the
cultural historian Americo Castro and even King Alfonso XIII.
Ojeda-Mata believes that any perceived proximity found between the
Spanish government and the Sephardim in North Africa was not due to a
vision of their shared ancestry but rather the political maneuverings
of colonialism.

Chapter 3 focuses on Sephardic life within Spanish borders, in
particular, the cities of Melilla and Barcelona. Ojeda-Mata carried
out an extensive anthropological study of the demographics of both
regions. This chapter provides some of the only research available
about the Jewish communities in Barcelona before 1939. A unique
aspect

*The Freedom Archives and Decolonizing the Past*
Oral History Association - January 11, 2019
--

The Freedom Archives is a non-profit
educational archive located in San Francisco dedicated to the preservation
and dissemination of historical audio, video, and print materials
documenting progressive movements and culture from the 1960s to the 1990s.
We’ve asked Nathaniel Moore and Claude Marks to discuss the expansive
project. Here, they reflect on the role that oral histories within the
archive play in creating deeper understandings and decolonizing the past.

*How did the Freedom Archives begin?*

During the mid-1960s, many young people in the San Francisco Bay Area were
involved in producing radio programming dedicated to documenting people’s
history, anti-colonial struggles, and social movements of the era. This
programming often combined in-depth interviews and reports on social and
cultural issues; activist voices from a number of social justice movements;
and original and recorded music, poetry, and sound collages. They were
broadcast over KPFA and the Pacifica Network
, as well as on KPOO
radio based in San Francisco. The vast majority of these programs were
independently produced by collective groupings, all with a commitment to
anti-imperialism, human rights, internationalism, and highlighting
marginalized voices and movements unheard in or distorted by the
establishment media.

In the late 1990s, this diverse core of original radio producers and
cultural workers organized a working group to restore and catalog these
historical tapes, saving them from further deterioration and loss, and
making their historical value and lessons accessible to future
generations—thus launching The Freedom Archives.

*How has the Freedom Archives project changed or developed since then?*

Over the past twenty years, the Freedom Archives has become a national and
international source of media of great interest to young people and
students, but also to teachers, diverse community organizations, media
outlets, filmmakers, activists, historians, artists and researchers. We
regularly produce original documentaries and educational media for use
within schools and as tools for community building. We’ve also designed and
launched a digital search engine that allows for increased access to our
holdings through a less academic and more user friendly exploration of our
materials. This site is media-sample-driven; advanced users can still use
Boolean search logic but all users can now use keywords, or simply explore
our site by using visual or other media-based cues.

We also maintain an active youth development program that encourages
engagement with historical materials and provides media production training
as well as fostering a love for progressive history. We have developed
strong, cooperative, and effective partnerships and project based
connections with a number of youth organizations, local high schools,
community colleges, and 4 year colleges and universities. Since 2003,
hundreds of young people have passed through the archives as a result of
our program.

*In what ways can the oral histories and historic audio in this archive
either supplement or change understandings about the past? Can you share an
example of how this occurs?*

In August 2017 we released a documentary titled *Symbols of Resistance*
which focuses on the
emergence of the Chican@ Movement in Colorado and New Mexico in the 1970s
through stories around the struggle for land, the student movement, and
community resistance against police repression. These stories are largely
absent from official histories of the period and had previously been shared
and passed down primarily through the oral remembrances of friends and
family members who knew the martyrs. Thus, this film is an important step
in preserving these important narratives for generations to come.

These stories also represent an important component of the Chican@ struggle
that is often not well understood—that the movement was not limited to
organizing agricultural workers. By uplifting perspectives of urban Chican@s
challenging police violence; issues of land rights, colonialism, and the
legitimacy of the US-Mexico border; and situating the movement in the

NY Times, Jan. 11, 2019
Before Trump, Steve King Set the Agenda for the Wall and Anti-Immigrant
By Trip Gabriel

Years before President Trump forced a government shutdown over a border
wall, triggering a momentous test of wills in Washington, Representative
Steve King of Iowa took to the House floor to show off a model of a
12-foot border wall he had designed.

And long before Mr. Trump demonized immigrants — accusing Mexico of
exporting criminals and calling for an end to birthright citizenship —
Mr. King turned those views into talking points, with his use of
misleading data about victims of undocumented immigrants and demeaning
remarks about Latinos.

Immigration is Mr. Trump’s go-to issue, his surest connection to his
most faithful supporters, and his prime-time address on Tuesday night
underscored his willingness to use fear and misleading statements to
appeal to voters — just as he did with warnings about a migrant caravan
before the midterm elections.

The Republican Party hadn’t always intended to go this route: Officials
tried for years to come up with broad-based immigration reform that
would appeal to growing numbers of Latino voters. But Mr. Trump’s
preoccupation with the wall and anti-immigrant politics reflects how he
has embraced the once-fringe views of Mr. King, who has used racist
language in the past, promotes neo-Nazis on Twitter and was recently
denounced by one Republican leader as a white supremacist.

With the federal government in a third week of paralysis over a border
wall, Mr. Trump’s positions are a reminder of how Mr. King’s ideology
and his language maligning undocumented residents helped shape the
Republican message in 2016 and 2018 and define Mr. Trump’s agenda and
prospects for re-election. Mr. King may have been ostracized by some
Republicans over his racist remarks and extremist ties, but as much of
the nation debates immigration, his views now carry substantial
influence on the right.

Early in Mr. Trump’s term, the president invited Mr. King — who was long
snubbed by establishment Republicans like the former House speaker John
A. Boehner — to the Oval Office. There, the president boasted of having
raised more money for the congressman’s campaigns than anyone else,
including during a 2014 Iowa visit, Mr. King recalled in an interview
with The Times.

“Yes, Mr. President,” Mr. King replied. “But I market-tested your
immigration policy for 14 years, and that ought to be worth something.”

Mr. King, a 69-year-old former bulldozer operator with a combative
manner, who has been elected nine times, helped write the book on white
identity politics that are ascendant in Mr. Trump’s Republican Party.
That provides both a template for Mr. Trump and a warning.

Mr. King’s full-throated embrace of nativism has long found a supportive
constituency in the rural Midwest, the region that was a key to Mr.
Trump’s 2016 victory and represents his most likely path to re-election.

But at the same time, Mr. King’s margin of victory in 2018 shrank to its
narrowest in 16 years. He made national headlines for endorsing a
Toronto mayoral candidate with neo-Nazi ties and for meeting with a
far-right Austrian party accused of trivializing the Holocaust. On
Twitter, he follows an Australian anti-Semitic activist, who proposed
hanging a portrait of Hitler “in every classroom.” And in October, the
chairman of the Republican House elections committee, Representative
Steve Stivers of Ohio, condemned Mr. King, saying, “We must stand up
against white supremacy and hate in all forms.”

Mr. King lost corporate agriculture donors like Purina, Land O’Lakes and
Smithfield. He dropped from an 18-point lead over his Democratic
opponent in his internal polls to barely squeaking out a three-point win
on Election Day. On Wednesday, Mr. King drew a formidable challenger for
his Fourth District seat in the 2020 Republican primary: Randy Feenstra,
an assistant majority leader in the State Senate, who said Mr. King had
left Iowa “without a seat at the table” because of “sideshows” and
“distractions.’’

Mr. King, in the interview, said he was not a racist. He pointed to his
Twitter timeline showing him greeting Iowans of all races and religions
in his Washington office. (The same office once displayed a Confederate
flag on his desk.)

At the same time, he said, he supports immigrants who enter the country
legally and fully assimilate because what matters more than race is “the
culture of America” based on values brought to the United States by
whites from Europe.

Reading through dossier after dossier on 16 American writers contained
in Writers Under Surveillance: The FBI Files, what strikes you
immediately is the terrifying absurdity of Hoover’s obsession with
anyone who didn’t follow his patriotic party line and dared to express
critical concern about the national psyche in well-written words. Susan
Sontag got a big file opened on her for visiting Hanoi during the
Vietnam War and speaking out on the bellicose campaign of “American
intervention”. The African-American sociologist and civil rights
advocate, WEB Du Bois, was investigated for being a communist (even
though he was known not to be) because he was “in sympathy with the
Southern Negro Youth Congress”. The FBI agent did mitigate this with the
following racist comment – that Du Bois was considered “one of the most
outstanding and competent negroes in Atlanta”.

Michael says that "the idea that momentous decisions are made entirely by
one guy with quasi-dictatorial powers is problematic" and that the decision
is within US imperialism's interests. The question is not whether it's
within US interests, it's whether it's within US interests as the
strategists for US capitalism conceive them. In other words, whether the
decision is within the strategy they have laid out.

I think the answer is definitively "no". That is why Mattis and others
almost immediately resigned when Trump made his announcement. It is also
why almost every major capitalist newspaper as well as the Council on
Foreign Affairs panned his announcement. It is also why Trump has now
reversed course. As we know, John Bolton has since laid out three
conditions for US troop withdrawal. They are: ISIS eliminated; Iran
influence eliminated; Kurds not slaughtered by Erdogan's forces. None of
those conditions can be assured, and Trump has since retreated. I think
it's pretty clear that he's not going to withdraw the US troops anytime
soon.

No, it is not in US interests, nor is it in their strategy, to get into a
military quagmire in Syria. The US troops have rarely been involved in
open, direct military battle.

Trump did not make the announcement purely on a whim. He did it within a
day or two of talking on the phone with Erdogan. I think we have to stop
seeing Trump as being strictly a representative of the US capitalist class,
or at least the ascendant wing of that class. He is as much a
representative of the Russian ruling class, as I've written many times in
the past. This is a totally unprecedented situation, and we need to
recognize it.

Naturally, one can not know exactly if such a deal (exchanging Idlib for
North-East Syria) has been struck between Putin and Erdoğan. If this has
been done (which is absolutely possible), it would demonstrate once more
that Turkey does not consider HTS as its agent (something which has been
claimed all too long by the Öcalanists).

Such a Turkish sell-out of Idlib would be not surprising since the HTS
leadership has sharply denounced those rebels who participate in the
Turkish operations. They have declared that both sides – Turkey and YPG
– are bad and that they have a neutral position in this conflict. It is
understandable if Ankara wants Assad and Putin to attack a HTS-dominated
Idlib.

However, one should add two points on this:

1) The HTS has certainly skillfully exploited a difficult situation of
the Turkish army as the latter is currently massively rallying its
forces at the South-Eastern border in order to attack the YPG. For this
reason it was objectively difficult for Turkey to support its allies
(Zenki, Ahrar, NLF, FSA, …) in Idlib during the recent clashes with HTS.
(By the way: what a powerful demonstration of the extreme stupidity of
these rebel factions to trust Ankara and to sell themselves to serve as
Turkish proxies!)

2) The whole development also demonstrates that the pro-Turkish factions
obviously did not have any significant strength by themselves, i.e.
without a Turkish military support. Particularly Zenki has been strongly
discredited among the population.

It seems, and this has also been noted by several observers, that HTS
hopes to repeat in Idlib what Hamas did in Gaza. However, I am rather
skeptical if this is possible.

In general, it seems more likely to me that Assad/Russia will attack
Idlib with full force in the near future. However, the Orange Man in the
White House and the massive inner contradictions in the Middle East
policy of declining U.S. imperialism create many unpredictable
possibilities for the future development of the war in Syria.

Am 11.01.2019 um 01:54 schrieb Chris Slee:
The rapid takeover of Idlib province by HTS may be the result of a
deal between Turkey and Russia, according to one commentator cited by
Kurdistan 24:

http://www.kurdistan24.net/en/news/404a7deb-ef97-43c2-a529-7ddfc4ac5e22

'According to Elizabeth Tsurkov, a Research Fellow who specializes in
Syria at the Forum for Regional Thinking, an Israeli think-tank,the
HTS takeover makes it easier for Russia and Damascus to justify an
assault on the province

'The HTS’ swift takeover of Idlib from Turkish-backed groups has
surprised many on the ground.

' “It is a mystery to me what Ankara is thinking. They invested
heavily in supporting Ahrar al-Sham, Faylaq al-Sham, and the National
Liberation Front, only to stand idly by and see them wiped out by
HTS,” Tsurkov said.

'Some Turkish-backed rebel groups and civilians believe that Ankara
may have allowed the “HTS to take over Idlib to justify [a] regime
offensive on the area in return for Russian permission to take Manbij
and Kurdish areas,” she added.''
