It is one of the most important sources of information about the Troubles
in Northern Ireland, a historical memory bank of data, stories and images
used by scholars around the world.

The Conflict Archive on the Internet (Cain) website, based in Derry, has
taken two decades to build up an unrivalled encyclopaedic digital record of
the conflict. It includes oral histories, election results, political
memorabilia, public records, bibliographies and the names and details of
more than 3,600 Troubles-related killings in Northern Ireland, Ireland, the
UK and continental Europe. The information is free to access and responsive
to requests and queries ranging from school students, professors and former
paramilitaries.

But perhaps not for much longer. Ulster University, which hosts the
archive’s three-strong team at its Magee campus, is threatening to pull the
plug. The university says the cost, estimated at £170,000 a year, is
unsustainable.

Academics are appalled. Some say that to cripple the archive would be an
act of intellectual vandalism when there is urgent need to understand
Northern Ireland’s conflicts, past and present.

[Marxism] [UCE] 'Pay Your Workers a Living Wage, ' Sanders Tells Walmart to at Its board meeting

Not that this is a wrong or totally ineffectual thing to do for a
political leader who purports to represent workers; it will certainly
resonate with his base. But Walmart can turn right around and say that
it has to keep costs low to counter the threat of giants like Amazon,
which with their simplified marketing ploy of enabling online ordering,
as short as two-day home delivery and markedly reduced costs, are
threatening Walmart's market share. And that to lose market share is to
go in the direction of contraction, rather than the imperative under
this system of constant expansion, and towards collapse. So then, we go
with hat in hand tremulous outrage to Amazon - or whatever innovating
competitor is next-in-line to steal a march on market domination and
therefore market share.

And this is about as far as any major candidate in this insanely
protracted presidential campaign is likely to get - New Deal solutions
all over again to unprecedented levels of looting the common weal and
looming economic, social and environmental crisis - in the absence of an
overwhelmingly powerful surge of worldwide worker awareness, organizing
and solidarity. To match the increasingly informed, integrated and
organized challenge of globally insurgent concentrated and centralized
capital.

https://tinyurl.com/y6jk4zcq

Bernie Sanders delivered this resolution request from the floor today at
the meeting of Walmart's board of directors:

Let me thank Walmart employee Kat Davis for introducing this resolution,
and it states, and I quote,

Resolved, shareholders of Walmart urge the board to adopt a policy of
promoting significant representation on employee perspectives among
corporate decision makers by requiring that the initial list from which
candidates are chosen by the nominating and governance committee include
hourly associates. The policy should provide that any third party
consultant asked to furnish an initial list that includes such
candidates. End of quote.

Madame Chair, the issue that we are dealing with today is pretty simple.
Walmart is the largest private employer in America and is owned by the
Walton family, the wealthiest family in the United States, worth
approximately 175 billion dollars. And yet, despite the incredible
wealth of its owners, Walmart pays many of its employees starvation
wages. Wages are so low that many of these employees are forced to rely
on government program like food stamps, Medicaid and public housing in
order to survive.

Frankly, the American people are sick and tired of subsidizing the greed
of some of the largest and most profitable corporations in this country.

They are also outraged by the grotesque level of income inequality in
America, as demonstrated by the CEO of Walmart making a thousand times
more than the average Walmart employee. Last year, Walmart made nearly
10 billion dollars in profit it paid its CEO over 20 million dollars in
compensation and it has authorized over 20 billion dollars in stock buy
backs, which will benefit its wealthiest stockholders.

Surely, with all of that, Walmart can afford to pay all of its employees
a living wage of at least 15 dollars an hour.

And that is not a radical idea, because many of Walmart's competitors,
like Amazon, Costco and Target have already moved in that direction.

Further Walmart could give a voice to its workers by allowing them seats
on the board of directors. The concerns of workers, not just
stockholders, shouldbe part of board decisions.

Today, with the passage of this resolution, Walmart can strike a blow
against corporate greed and a grotesque level of income and wealth
inequality that exists in our country.

Please do the right thing. Please pass this resolution.

Thank you very much.

It’s easy to bash white middled-aged men in America. As a member of that
privileged group, I’ll admit that much of the bashing has been
warranted: No group in the history of the world has been given and
squandered more than the white man. Yet the American white man is
responsible for enough suicides annually that Madison Square Garden
could not hold all the victims. And no matter how privileged, that’s
somebody’s dad, someone’s friend, someone’s brother and someone’s husband.

*By Karen Sieber | Jun 3, 2019 *

When I began work on *Visualizing the Red Summer*
, a comprehensive digital archive,
map, and timeline of riots and lynchings across the United States in 1919,
my initial motivation was, honestly, frustration. I first came to know
about the Red Summer not in a book or classroom, but during a spring break
visit to Knoxville, Tennessee, while asking my Airbnb host about the
history of the neighborhood I was staying in. A violent white lynch mob had
wreaked havoc on the city in late August 1919, part of a nationwide string
of violence against African Americans that summer.

I was a student in my late 30s at the time, completing my undergraduate
degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Outraged by my
ignorance of that summer (especially as a native Chicagoan, where some of
the worst riots erupted), I sought more information. The same regurgitated
Wikipedia information filled website after website. While I knew historic
documents had to exist, almost none were digitized or discoverable in any
manner, and those I could find were scattered across the country. For the
average student, scholar, or interested layperson, the material was
virtually inaccessible, and did not give a sense of connection to other
similar events that took place that summer.

The term “Red Summer,” coined by James Weldon Johnson of the NAACP, refers
to a series of more than three dozen geographically dispersed race riots,
lynchings, and other violent attacks targeting African Americans in 1919.
While each location’s circumstances were unique, trends and parallels
emerged. Tensions between the races had been rising for a few years during
the first wave of the Great Migration, with an increase in housing
problems, job competition, and territorial disputes. World War I had
recently ended, and African American soldiers returning home were often the
subjects of attacks, sometimes at the hands of white servicemen. Although
technically unconnected, the individual events likely fueled a collective
mindset and fear.

I felt the need to act. Armed with my own frustration and an iPhone, I set
off on a solo 7,500-mile road trip in the summer of 2015 to collect as much
material as I could find related to the riots. I started by both reaching
out to institutions near riot locations, as well as building off
bibliographies from academic publications that *did *exist
. Most books and articles
focus on individual city’s riots, such as William M. Tuttle’s *Race Riot:
Chicago in the Red Summer of 1919 *(1970) or Richard C. Cortner’s *A Mob
Intent on Death: The NAACP and the Arkansas Riot Cases *(1988), although
they do occasionally mention violence elsewhere in the country. Journalist
Cameron McWhirter’s comprehensive and well-researched *Red Summer: The
Summer of 1919 and the Awakening of Black America *(2011) was also useful
as I built a list of existing materials on the topic.

Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front
by Wendell Berry

Love the quick profit, the annual raise,
vacation with pay. Want more
of everything ready-made. Be afraid
to know your neighbors and to die.

And you will have a window in your head.
Not even your future will be a mystery
any more. Your mind will be punched in a card
and shut away in a little drawer.

When they want you to buy something
they will call you. When they want you
to die for profit they will let you know.
So, friends, every day do something
that won't compute. Love the Lord.
Love the world. Work for nothing.
Take all that you have and be poor.
Love someone who does not deserve it.

Denounce the government and embrace
the flag. Hope to live in that free
republic for which it stands.
Give your approval to all you cannot
understand. Praise ignorance, for what man
has not encountered he has not destroyed.

Ask the questions that have no answers.
Invest in the millenium. Plant sequoias.
Say that your main crop is the forest
that you did not plant,
that you will not live to harvest.

Say that the leaves are harvested
when they have rotted into the mold.
Call that profit. Prophesy such returns.
Put your faith in the two inches of humus
that will build under the trees
every thousand years.

Listen to carrion -- put your ear
close, and hear the faint chattering
of the songs that are to come.
Expect the end of the world. Laugh.
Laughter is immeasurable. Be joyful
though you have considered all the facts.
So long as women do not go cheap
for power, please women more than men.

Ask yourself: Will this satisfy
a woman satisfied to bear a child?
Will this disturb the sleep
of a woman near to giving birth?

Go with your love to the fields.
Lie down in the shade. Rest your head
in her lap. Swear allegiance
to what is nighest your thoughts.

As soon as the generals and the politicos
can predict the motions of your mind,
lose it. Leave it as a sign
to mark the false trail, the way
you didn't go.

Be like the fox
who makes more tracks than necessary,
some in the wrong direction.
Practice resurrection.

The bookies, Labour activists, and the Brexit Party all seem to think

To my knowledge, Keynes was never a radical socialist. I think Michael Roberts
is correct in characterizing him as having been a supporter of a managed
capitalism.

Keynes's disciples on the other hand, have been all over the lot politically.
Joan Robinson was very much a socialist. And in the 1960's she had even been
supportive of the Cultural Revolution in China. Other Keynesians have been much
more conservative politically. Arthur Burns, who served under both the
Eisenhower and the Nixon Administrations was an example of a Keynesian
economist who was of decidedly conservative political leanings. Most Keynesians
have, however, usually been center-left in their politics.

I think Keynes over the course of his life validated the old Walt Whitman
line:

"Do I contradict myself? So, I contradict myself!! I am vast. I contain
multitudes!!!"

(don't even know if I got the quote right --- but I have the essence.
Keynes as many things all wound up into one --- Joan Robinson always
claimed that Keynes was not a radical socialist --- and she knew him well!!)

NY Times Op-Ed, June 5, 2019
In Syria, Even the Hospitals Are Not Safe
Bashar al-Assad attacks medical facilities to break the will of the
people — and to destroy evidence of his war crimes.

By Janine di Giovanni

Ms. di Giovanni is the author of “The Morning They Came for Us:
Dispatches From Syria.”

After eight brutal years, it is hard to find anything shocking about the
Syrian civil war. But somehow, the government forces under President
Bashar al-Assad always find a way. On May 15, Syrian bombs destroyed the
Tarmala Maternity and Children’s Hospital in Idlib, the 19th medical
facility attacked since late April.

Mr. al-Assad’s campaign against hospitals is not just inhumane — it
represents one of the most repellent aspects of modern warfare.
Hospitals were once off limits; even in conflicts where the
international laws of war were routinely flouted, medical facilities
were spared.

That has changed. Governments increasingly turn on civilians, and
hospitals and medical workers are being deliberately targeted in an
effort to silence them. Doctors are tortured and killed. Health care
workers have been robbed, looted, beaten and murdered in Central African
Republic, Congo, Lebanon and Myanmar.

Nowhere is this more obvious than Syria. In May, Rola Hallam, a
British-trained Syrian anesthetist, crossed the border from Turkey into
Ghandoura, a small town in the northern Aleppo countryside. After
passing through several armed checkpoints, she reached the Hope Hospital
for Children, which she and her colleagues had built in just three
months in 2017.

Hope is the seventh hospital she and her team — an organization called
CanDo — have built since 2016 after six medical facilities in Aleppo,
including a children’s hospital, were destroyed by Russian and Syrian
government planes.

She thought how she had planned the site of the new hospital, trying to
find a place where it was less likely to be attacked. “That’s a question
we should not have to ask,” she told me. “Hospitals should not be bombed.”

But in Syria, hospitals are a tool of war. Dr. Hallam said there have
been 91 attacks since April 2017. This means that hospitals cannot treat
the sick or dying. It means people with chronic illness have no care. No
maternity clinics or diagnostic labs.

The government’s campaign against hospitals goes back to the beginning
of the war, when the protests against the government started. President
al-Assad, an ophthalmologist, believed that doctors who treated bleeding
and battered protesters were themselves anti-government partisans.

Last month, a group of 400 Syrian medics, rescue workers and
humanitarian activists signed a letter calling on the key players in
northwest Syria — Russia, Turkey and members of the United Nations
Security Council — to stop the bombing in the Idlib region, which is
supposed to be a demilitarized zone.

President al-Assad says that the attacks are necessary because
terrorists use hospitals as arms depots (an unfounded claim); he also
says that most of the bombs that do hit hospitals are errant.

But Susannah Sirkin, the policy director of Physicians for Human Rights,
believes that the bombings are systematic, amounting to crimes against
humanity. She says that since 2011, her organization has documented 566
individual attacks on about 350 Syrian health care facilities. More than
890 medical personnel have been killed, some in attacks on the medical
facilities where they worked.

What explains such an extensive and cruel campaign? In President
al-Assad’s mind, somewhere along the line, “opposition” became a synonym
for “civilians,” many of whom don’t support either side but just want to
stay alive. The most threatening way you can terrorize a population is
to bomb hospitals and kill doctors.

And by killing doctors, who are often the community leaders, you can
break down society faster and force surrender quicker. You kill the very
people who can heal a community. “When they kill one doctor, they kill
1,000 civilians,” Dr. Hallam said.

And there is another reason for the attacks.

In an isolated villa on the grounds of the United Nations in Geneva, war
crime investigators are methodically going through thousands of hours of
video recordings of bombings taken by civilians. This evidence will be
used to build cases in war crimes tribunals. By killing doctors, the
Assad regime and its Russian allies destroy further evidence — and
witnesses.

It is the same reasoning behind so-called double-tap bombings, often
deployed by Russian forces in Syria. Many rescue workers record their
work — the famed White Helmets

Ricardo Duchesne was a PEN-L subscriber who never showed signs of white
supremacy when he was a dissertation student. I discuss his evolution
