"When a big game hunter goes after a large and dangerous beast, he had
better understand how that beast functions, or else the hunter can become
the hunted. The same is true for those who wish to bring an end to the
dangerous beast known as capitalism. However, all too many show an
unfortunate tendency towards complete misunderstanding of this particular
beast. The story of the Russian government offering a bounty to the Taliban
for any US soldier they kill in Afghanistan is an example.

"Many on the left denounce that story as just another example of war
mongering. They use the case of the Bush claim of Saddam Hussein’s weapons
of mass destruction. They rely on the likes of the pro Assad Chris Hedges
as an example. Hedges, who is an Assad defender , claims that it’s the
military industrial complex that is likely inventing this story because
Trump is pushing us “to the brink of peace”. Another example is the group
“Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting” (FAIR.org) which also has a similar
approach as far as supporting Assad. They also refer back to the WMD claims.

Let’s review what actually happened in the US build-up to its invasion of
Iraq:"

In this year of our vainglorious buffoonish Lord Trump, it seems a quip
from the old girl about another old bastard might be apt

"In a book called Leaders, Nixon praises de Gaulle, from whom he learned
two lessons. First, power accrues to the ruler whose actions are
unpredictable. Although this tactic might work at a local level for the
leader of a minor country, such a system of unexpectedness on the part of
the emperor of the West could send what is known euphemistically as the
Wrong Signal to the emperor of the East, in which case there would never be
enough shovels to protect us from the subsequent nuclear rain... The
second—more practical—lesson was in de Gaulle’s view that nations are
nations, and while political systems come and go, national interests
continue for millennia. Like every good and bad American, Nixon knows
almost no history of any kind. But he was quick to pick up on the fact that
the Russians and the Chinese each have a world view that has nothing at all
to do with communism, or whatever happens to be the current official name
for Heaven’s Mandate... Nixon proceeded to do the unexpected. He buried the
hatchet with the Son of Heaven, Mao, by going to see him—as is proper for
the Barbarian from beyond the Four Seas if he wishes to enjoy the patronage
of the Lord of the Middle Kingdom. Then, from this position of strength,
Nixon paid a call on the Czar of all the Russians, whose mouth, to say the
least, was somewhat ajar at what Nixon had done in China."

Received today.

As most of you already know, the situation in Lebanon is dire and it's getting
worse by the day. This is especially true for migrant workers in the country
who have seen their wages obliterated by the free fall of the local currency
and the dollar shortages.

Alongside supporting migrant workers organize against the Kafala system and
launching many protests/propaganda campaigns to garner momentum that call for
the dismantling of the Kafala system, we have also launched this crowdfunding
initiative in order to support migrant workers in their fight against Kafala.

I really hope I can count on you to donate and disseminate this crowdfunding
campaign (even 100$ can make a difference since our currency is extremely
volatile).

Here's a link to the campaign:

Here is an article on the coming wave of evictions in the black and Latino
communities. This makes it all the more important to organize protests
against the ending of the $600/week unemployment benefit. I have tried to
be pretty diplomatic about it up until now, but I received no reply, so I'm
going to be more blunt: It is very disappointing that those RSN members in
the Oakland area have completely ignored my proposals for RSN to organize a
protest around this. It really leads me to question what is happening and
it should lead others to do the same.

"A backlog of eviction cases is beginning to move through the court system
as millions of Americans who had counted on federal aid and eviction
moratoriums to stay in their homes now fear being thrown out.

A crisis among renters is expected to deepen this month as the enhanced
unemployment benefits that have kept many afloat run out at the end of the
July, and the $1,200 per adult stimulus payment that had supported
households earlier in the crisis becomes a distant memory.

"Meanwhile, enforcement of federal moratoriums on some types of evictions
is uneven, with experts warning that judges’ efforts to limit access to
courtrooms or hold hearings online because of covid-19 could increasingly
leave elderly or poor renters at a disadvantage.

"Of the 110 million Americans

living
in rental households, 20 percent are at risk of eviction by Sept. 30,
according to an analysis by the Covid-19 Eviction Defense Project
, a Colorado-based community group. African
American and Hispanic renters are expected to be hardest hit."

(My own discussion of Ulrichs's importance:
http://www.columbia.edu/~lnp3/mydocs/sex_gender/engels_homophobia.htm)

NY Times, July 6, 2020
Overlooked No More: Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, Pioneering Gay Activist
By Liam Stack

Overlooked is a series of obituaries about remarkable people whose
deaths, beginning in 1851, went unreported in The Times.

By the time the lawyer and writer Karl Heinrich Ulrichs took the podium
at a meeting of the Association of German Jurists in 1867, rumors about
his same-sex love affairs — and the subsequent threat of arrest and
prosecution — had already cost him his legal career and forced him to
flee his homeland.

Standing in Munich before more than 500 lawyers, officials and academics
— many of whom jeered as he spoke — Ulrichs argued for the repeal of
sodomy laws that criminalized sex between men in several of the
German-speaking kingdoms and duchies that existed in the years before
the creation of a unified German state.

“Gentlemen, my proposal is directed toward a revision of the current
penal law,” he said, according to the historian Robert Beachy in the
2014 book “Gay Berlin: Birthplace of a Modern Identity.”

Ulrichs described a “class of persons” who faced persecution simply
because “nature has planted in them a sexual nature that is opposite of
that which is usual."

Same-sex attraction was a deeply taboo topic at the time; the word
“homosexuality” would not even exist for another two years, when it was
coined by the Austro-Hungarian writer Karl-Maria Kertbeny. So the ideas
in Ulrichs’s speech — that such attraction was innate, and that those
who experienced it should be treated the same as anyone else — were
revolutionary.

His remarks preceded by more than 100 years the Stonewall riots in New
York in 1969, which are widely seen as the start of the modern
L.G.B.T.Q. rights movement.

They helped inspire the rise of the world’s first gay rights movement,
30 years later in Berlin.

They foreshadowed the imposition of a sodomy law across the German
Empire that would later be used by the Nazis to target gay men,
thousands of whom were killed in concentration camps.

And they made history: Ulrichs is believed to have been the first person
to publicly “come out,” in the modern sense of the term.

“I think it is reasonable to describe him as the first gay person to
publicly out himself,” Robert Beachy said in an interview. “There is
nothing comparable in the historical record. There is just nothing else
like this out there.”

His speech was also deeply unwelcome at the 1867 meeting, where the
audience erupted in shouts of “Stop!” and “Crucify!” that ultimately
forced Ulrichs off the stage.

For much of Ulrichs’s life, same-sex relations were widely seen as a
pathology or as a sin to which any person could succumb if seized by
wickedness. These views still exist in some parts of the world.

Ulrichs helped forge the concepts of gay people as a distinct group and
of sexual identity as an innate human characteristic in a series of
pamphlets he wrote from 1864 to 1879 — at first under a pseudonym, but
under his own name after he gave his speech at the 1867 conference.

“By publishing these writings I have initiated a scientific discussion
based on facts,” he wrote in a letter published in 1864 in Deutsche
Allgemeine, a pan-German newspaper.

“Until now the treatment of the subject has been biased, not to mention
contemptuous,” he added. “My writings are the voice of a socially
oppressed minority that now claims its rights to be heard.”

His work was widely read by sex researchers. One of them, Richard von
Krafft-Ebing, cited the pamphlets in his pioneering 1886 text,
“Psychopathia Sexualis,” which described homosexuality as a mental illness.

In later editions, Krafft-Ebing published letters from men who had read
about Ulrichs in his book. The letters showed that not only did
Ulrichs’s pamphlets explore theories about sexuality, but they also
helped foster a sense of community.

“I cannot describe what a salvation it was for me,” one of the men
wrote, “to learn that there are many other men who are sexually
constituted the way I am, and that my sexual feeling was not an
aberration but rather a sexual orientation determined by nature.”

Karl Heinrich Ulrichs was born on Aug. 28, 1825, in Aurich, in the
kingdom of Hanover in northwestern Germany, to an upper-middle-class
family that included several Lutheran pastors. He studied Latin and
Greek before beginning his legal studies at the University of Göttingen.

He secured prestigious positions in the Hanoverian Civil Service, but

A recent study seemed to show that SARS-CoV-19 antibodies disappear in a
person over a fairly short period of time. That is important because it
might mean that an effective long term vaccine against the disease is not
possible. "Seem" and "might" are the operative words. Here is a study that
seems to show the opposite. In this study, researchers found a T-cell in
people who had been uninfected (as far as they knew) that reacted to the
virus. The researchers concluded that it's possible (note: "possible") that
these people had been exposed to another virus in the coronavirus family
and had manufactured a T-cell that reacted to that virus and was also
reactive to SARS-CoV-19. In that case, it could mean that some antibodies
remain for a longer period of time.

One thing I've learned from following the science in this disease is how
very complex scientific research is and why it's important to hesitate to
draw definitive conclusions. But we as workers definitely need to keep
abreast of the research.

Unfolding in the pages of Mike Stout’s new political memoir, Homestead
Steel Mill: The Final Ten Years, is the radical history of a people too
commonly believed to have none. It is a history largely absent from
popular records of the political tumult of the 1960s and ’70s, though
its energy, militance and imagination grew out of that era and extended,
like so many fierce but near-forgotten political projects, into the
1980s. It is a story of class struggle in a society whose official
scribes are mostly stupid about class when they aren’t willfully
deceptive. It is a story of the built world – of some of the men and
women who made it, and who, in one extraordinary moment in time, strove
not just to halt their own unmaking but to dream something different and
beautiful.

Leicester is a medium-sized city in the centre of England. It has come
into the limelight in the last few weeks because of an outbreak of
COVID-19 in the city, forcing a local lockdown, while the rest of
England starts to ‘come out’. Leicester has a relatively high British
Asian community and many are concentrated for work in the garment
industry. And it is here that the COVID outbreak seems to have emerged.

[Marxism] Alston Poverty Report FINAL

This report is submitted by Philip Alston. The world is at an existential
crossroads
involving a pandemic, a deep economic recession, devastating climate change,
extreme
inequality, and an uprising against racist policies. Running through all of
these challenges
is the longstanding neglect of extreme poverty by many governments, economists,
and
human rights advocates.
By single-mindedly focusing on the World Bank’s flawed international poverty
line, the
international community mistakenly gauges progress in eliminating poverty by
reference to
a standard of miserable subsistence rather than an even minimally adequate
standard of
living. This in turn facilitates greatly exaggerated claims about the impending
eradication
of extreme poverty and downplays the parlous state of impoverishment in which
billions of
people still subsist.
While the Sustainable Development Goals have achieved a great deal, they are
failing in
relation to key goals such as poverty eradication, economic equality, gender
equality, and
climate change. They need to be recalibrated in response to COVID-19, the
ensuing
recession, and accelerating global warming.
Poverty is a political choice and its elimination requires: (i) reconceiving
the relationship
between growth and poverty elimination; (ii) tackling inequality and embracing
redistribution; (iii) promoting tax justice; (iv) implementing universal social
protection; (v)
centering the role of government; (vi) embracing participatory governance; and
(vii)
adapting international poverty measurement.
