Abstract:

Although digital asset management has been a common topic among museums,
libraries and archives in the last several years, many of our member
institutions are still struggling with a lot of issues and processes
surrounding DAM and its related systems and tools. While many of our members
are in the process of selecting, evaluating or implementing their
first-generation of DAM systems, a few early adopters or implementers of DAM
systems are actively evaluating their existing systems and making plans for
their future development and growth. The proliferation of new digital media
types and the explosion of digital assets in museums have made it a more
pressing issue.

Session Description:

Panelists:

*Emma Wolman, Digital Assets Manager, Portland Art Museum

*Perian Sully, Project Manager, Digital Asset Management and Online Access,
Balboa Park Online Collaborative

*Megan McGovern, Digital Asset Specialist, Corning Museum of Glass

*David Dwiggins, Systems Librarian/Archivist, Historic New England

Moderator:

*Billy Kwan, Systems Librarian, Image Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Session Description:

This panel discussion gathers members and experts from our diverse community to
share their DAM implementation experiences. Our panel speakers represent
museums or archives of various backgrounds and scales, and they all use
different digital asset management systems. Each one of them will give an
overview of their system or highlight any particular aspects of their
implementation. After their presentations, there will be moderated discussion
on the following topics:

*DAM systems vs. collection management systems

*Data interchanges between the two types of systems

*Metadata structures and standards

*Local collections of digital assets

*Non-still image digital assets, i.e., 3D image, audio and video files

Anyone who is interested should join us for a discussion at the

We're open to discussing any topics of interest, as well as the future of

etc.). We are also looking for a chair or co-chairs for the Standards SIG;
if you're interested in getting more involved, this is a great way to do

[MCN-L] E-books in museums

2011-11-09 Thread Greg Albers
Hi All,

A couple weeks ago, I gave a presentation at the "Books in Browsers"
publishing conference. Making a larger point about e-books' inherent
instantaneity and everywhere-ness, I proposed giving museum visitors
e-books downloads directly from artworks in galleries, with the help
of a QR code and a smartphone. Someone who saw the presentation
pointed me to MoMA's "Talk To Me" as a current example of a museum
exhibition connecting rich digital content of all sorts directly to
physical objects and places.

I know of a few other tangential examples, but I'm wondering if anyone
else out there is doing anything specifically with in-museum e-books
at all? I'd love to hear about it if you are. Or, if you'll be in
Atlanta next week and can chat in person, that would be great as well,
I'll be there leading a workshop ... on e-books.

Thanks!
Greg
