[MCN-L] Nor Cal event: ResearchSpace at the British Museum

2018-09-17 Thread Layna White
A Northern California event:

Can the 'Curatorial' extend to the Digital Space?
Friday October 5, 2018
3:00 – 5:00 pm @ SFMOMA

The relationship between art and the world is usually experienced and
interpreted in person within the physical walls of a gallery, the curatorial
movement has sought to extend the physical boundaries and include associated
community orientated activities. Can this extension be applied to the Digital,
and what form should it take?

Please join us at SFMOMA for a presentation and discussion of ResearchSpace led
by Dominic Oldman and Diana Tanase of the British Museum.

Dominic and Diana will discuss their work to develop ResearchSpace as a new
type of digital system, one concerned with presenting the knowledge systems of
art creators, curators and those who interact with it to provide a digital
curatorial experience capable of expressing human interpretations from
different perspectives in a computer readable form that can be integrated into
wider information infrastructures.

Check out a fuller description of their presentation here:
http://bit.ly/2xh34iy.

ResearchSpace is a project supported by the Andrew W. Mellon foundation, with
the objective of providing an interdisciplinary and long term knowledge based
approach to digital systems. It uses Semantic Web technologies and an
ontological framework as a basis for capturing epistemological activities.

Re: [MCN-L] Expression Engine

2018-09-17 Thread Susan Edwards
Hi all and Robin -
Sorry for the late reply - I have been researching CMSs for our website
this year. I agree with Sina and others about Wordpress, that it's a great
solution for *most* museums. You'll want to look closely at the scope and
functionality of the site to help assess. WP is great for typical/common
functionality, where others have solved the problem for you and you can
benefit from the community's knowledge. Because our website is quite
complex, with academic digital publishing features, and complex events
management, we are still evaluating whether WP is viable and it seems like
it is probably too limiting for what we need. So we are looking closely at
both WP and October. October is built on the same framework as Craft,
called Laravel.
