[MCN-L] Wordpress plugin extinction

2014-10-15 Thread Jaki Levy
Hi All,

Timthumb is a script used by themes and plugins to resize images. It's very
popular on themes by WooThemes.

http://www.woothemes.com/2014/06/timthumb-vulnerability-protect-website/

There have been several security issues with timThumb so many hosts and
developers stopped supporting it, though it's still widely used by people
like me. As long as you're running the most recent version of timthumb,
your plugins are updated, and you're running the most recent version of
WordPress, you should be good.

Replacing timthumb usually requires rewriting part of your theme. This can
vary from a few hours of work to a few weeks, depending on how the theme
was built.

The best way to get an accurate quote is to work w a web shop, agency, or
freelancer on a retainer or consult.
I'm not sure what exactly timthumb does or did, but we use Post Thumbnail
Editor for creating thumbnails and other sizes of pictures to be used on
our site. Maybe it can work for you too?

Regards,
Daniel

 Hello,
We had a custom Wordpress theme designed and one of the plugins used is
no longer supported. As a result the site is not rendering properly on all

We can obviously reach out to the original company that designed the
theme, but I am wondering if that is our only solution? Perhaps the
collective wisdom of the MCN community might have additional advice?
Ideally I would like to get a sense of how much the fix will cost to know
whether we have to bid out the job.

(for those interest, the plugin that needs replacing is timthumb)

 Many thanks!

[MCN-L] Cisco VOIP/networking consulting in New England

2013-06-04 Thread Jaki Levy
Hi David - I'd suggest getting in touch with Michael Spadaro, from Profound
Cloud.

http://profoundcloud.com

They offer all kinds of IT Services and implementation solutions, including
a dedicated Helpdesk and tech planning projects.

They are fantastic partners for short term or long term projects.

Hope that helps!

any recommendations for individual consultants or organizations with
expertise in this area. Expertise with SonicWall would be a bonus.

We would probably prefer someone who was located in New England if
 possible.

 Thanks in advance,

[MCN-L] Managing Museum Sites on WordPress

2013-01-22 Thread Jaki Levy
Hi Everyone -

This is turning out to be a really fun project - I've gotten some nice
results from folks across. Thank you.

As part of this research project, I also started looking into what CMS's
Museums are using. Is this kind of data already available?

Here is some data I've collected initially :
http://www.arrowrootmedia.com/2013/01/22/what-kind-of-cmss-do-museums-use/

Quick bullet points :

   - Out of 500 museums I reviewed, over 50 of them use WordPress, and 46
use Drupal for their main sites
   - Very few are using Blogger, SharePoint, Joomla, Expression Engine
   - A majority of museums don't have their code documented in a way that
   could have a CMS detected

In any case, if anyone has run a research project like this, or is
interested in helping collect this data, organize survey results, or simply
participate in this data collection project, please do feel free to reach
out.

I'm thinking this could definitely turn into a nice MCN presentation. If
not, at least we'll have more data. And who doesn't love *more data?* :-)

Sincerely,
Jaki

[MCN-L] Server advice requested

2012-12-06 Thread Jaki Levy
Hi All -

Robin - it's not clear to me what kind of servers you're looking for.

That said, I wanted to make sure people knew about Pantheon for Drupal
hosting. They provide you with great setups for dev, staging, and
production. They also make migration code VERY easy. Their servers are
running on Rackspace so their service is more of a managed dashboard for
solid architecture. Regardless, they are just as reliable as Acquia.

You can try a free plan here - http://getpantheon.com

On Thursday, December 6, 2012, Josh Goldblum wrote:

 hey Robin

Meant to jump on the last post. We do a ton of work with Drupal work.
Drupal and Expression Engine are both really fantastic CMS solutions; we
usually lean towards Drupal 7, since its open source, has a large dev
 community, etc.

I would definitely try and host this on a MediaTemple (Dreamhost we've
been really unhappy with) or a similar hosting platform. Cloud hosting via
Amazon S3 is great, but does involve some real heavy lifting on the server
side to install and maintain the codebase.

You might also consider hosting with Acquia:
 http://www.acquia.com

This is a great cloud hosted solution that also provides robust support,
will keep your modules and security patches up to date, etc. It's not super
cheap but it probably the best long-term hosting solution for Drupal.

Feel free to hit me up for more info. We've hosted Drupal on a range of
hosts and definitely have our favorites. As a general rule don't cheap out
on hosting, since migrating a Drupal site is none too easy once its up and
 running.

 Hope this helps

[MCN-L] [DM SIG:]2013 MCN Presentations from DMSIG

2012-11-15 Thread Jaki Levy
Not quite sure of the title - but I would add something like Emergent [or
experimental] Media.

During the closing of MCN2012, we broke out into mini groups and discussed
a few topics. One of the topic areas that I sat in on was Emerging Hardware
(think 3D Printing and Augmented Reality). See wiki for discussion :
http://www.mcn.edu/3d-printing-and-emerging-hardware

Personally, I'd like to see a discussion around RD of FabLab (fabircation
lab) type spaces in museums, centered around the question How can museums
facilitate innovation? I did a brief presentation re: networks
(presentation here :
https://www.dropbox.com/s/plf2myrziaktxkf/artsTech-mcn2012.pdf) that
touched on this idea, but there's more room for discussion.

When Facebook and Twitter were first emerging as viable communication
channels, we were seeing a good deal of innovation in how we were
communicating with the public. Here's an event we did in 2010 that looked
at how artists are using social media to create new work :
http://www.arrowrootmedia.com/2010/02/02/social-media-week-nyc-2010/

I'm curious how this practice of innovation can continue in our community
and beyond.
